When your report of the operations at
La Panne on the morning of the 28th May is forwarded,
I beg to request that the name of Leading Seaman R.J.
Myers, J/58522, be forwarded for consideration for &
Decoration.
Leading Seamen Myers landed to the beach
with the first boat party, and with the breakdown of
the Launch, personally ferried, single-handed, some
60 or 70 soldiers in the Ship's Lifeboat. At the
end of the first trip, when reliefs had to be placed
in the boats due to exhaustion, Leading Seamin Hyers
carried on in charge of & boat's crew, who made three
journeys, towing three loaded Lifeboats to the Ship
and in effect brought at least 250 officers and men
to safety.
When our covering Destroyer "Viny" had
to leave us, Myers was very reluctant to leave the
beach, and when some half an hour later we closed you
at La Panne, Landing Secmen Myers again went any in
charge of the boats and was actually the last British
Naval rating to leave that beach.
I consider that the cheerful, resourceful
demeenour of this rating, allied with his great
physical endurance and devotion to duty, is worthy
of a high reward.
Leading Seaman Myers was previously
recommended in my Half-yearly Report to you for
consideration.
