Re Dunkirk.
One of the most outstanding incidents to come
under my notice, was the action of one of our dstroyers.
We had had a quiet, uneventful crossing in
very fine weather on this particular morning, and orders were
to enter Dunkirk Roads, by the South Channel. This Channel
runs very close to the shore, to the southward of Dunkirk, and
part of this shore was in enemy hands. As we entered this channel
a destroyer, came to meet us, and got between us and the shore
and escorting us for some distance, and letting out a smoke
screen, shielding us from the shore. All the time the destoyer's
gun were blaxing away, and his anti-aircraft guns were in action
with many enemy planes, that were overhead.
The destroyer went ahead, and as he passed us,
we got a cheery wave from the officers on the bridge, and most
were doing their job, that drew the admiration of myself and
of the crew. It was the cool efficiency, with which those chaps
crew. Their action made our work easier, and we filled up with
troops in no time.
