Se 8:00 STATE that OF S.T.N.6b. MINUTE SHEET. Reference Louse the of GISTE are Two points occurred to me in connection with the process of clearing up after dynamo - (1) Loss of gear by vessels taken for this operation. ne, No. It is apparent that most, if not all, gear on board the area Flood vessels when they proceeded to Dunkirk was taken off at either Sheerness, Ramsgate or Dover and simply dumped by the Naval Officers at these ports. A great number. of claims will no doubt be received from owners for loss of gear, and in all cases we must accept, I presume, their charge. I was wondering whether any action could be taken to get a list of gear now lying at these ports which was taken from the vessels and either bring it to one of the docks or under one centralised place in order that when we get the claims from owners we might perhaps adopt a system whereby they could identify their own property. A case in point is that of the "JANE HANNAH" where the owner said his gear was taken from the vessel at Dover. I told him to go to Dover, and arranged for him to do to see if he could identify his property, as it was rather expensive. He visited Dover, and has informed this Department that he has obtained the gear. If some procedure could be adopted I feel sure that it will reduce considerably the claims which no doubt will be made in this respect. The Tane Hannah is (2) Customs Officers and Receivers of Wrecks. I had a word with Mr. Broadley about ten days ago and enquired whether he would obtain a list of craft taken by these officers during the period of the Dunkirk operations to the 1 present time. No replies have yet been received but no doubt such things as dinghies, punts and probably wherries, were taken by under their wing as salvage. Should not all such craft as 2 these be claimed by Sea Transport Department, although I am sure we cannot, or any individual owner, identify and prove them as being their property? In any case, any such craft which may have been brought within their purview will no doubt be as a result of the Dunkirk evacuation, and should, in my opinion, even if unidentified, be claimed and sold for the benefit of Sea Transport Department who will have to meet the claims by owners for the loss of such craft. It should be Easy think to come any claims from Lan of the hand, and/N becames of works. Mr. Moore.
