Left Dover about 4.30.a.m. en route to Dunkerque at approx. 05.40, whilst steaming along the French coast 6
of miles E.N.E. of Calais, enemy batteries opened fire. A considerable number of shells exploded near this vessel and as far as can be ascertained she was struck by 4 sustaining the following damage.
Shell plating (port and starboard) pierced in way of forward boiler room;
Steam pipe and various fittings in boiler room damaged. Shell plating
(starboard) pierced in way 1st. Class Smoke Room. Damage to woodwork and fittings in Smoke Room, main deck flat and Chief Steward's Cabin.
Bulwark plating (starboard) amidships pierced twice. Shells exploding in starboard lounge deck wrecking interior of state cabins
A and B, severely damaging cabins Nos. 9 and 10. Cabin casing, lounge deck, windows, decking and woodwork in vicinity badly damaged.
No. 4 boat, stern post fractured and boat planking split. A number of smouldering life jackets jettisoned.
The following members of the crew were injured:-
Albert Phillips, Fireman - - left thigh and shoulder
Archibald Crofts, 2nd. Steward - wound in back.
John Groves - slight wound in leg.
The ship was turned and headed back to Dover, having to cross a mine field to get out of range of the enemy gunfire.
The vessel was berthed alongside the Admiralty Pier, No. I berth at 09.11 and two of the wounded, A. Phillips, and A. Crofts, were taken to Dover Hospital where A. Phillips died during the night of the 27th May.
At 17.00 this vessel was towed into the Granville Dock by the tugs "CORDIA" and "BRASSEY".
Temporary repairs carried out.
29th May
30th May. 07.15 Cleared Granville Dock, and proceededto Southampton to complete repairs, docked Inner Dock, Southampton,
19.40.
1-4 June Under repair at Southampton.
N.B. This vessel with the "Maid of Orleans" was under heavy enemy shell fire when off Boulogne on 23rd May, but sustained no damage.
