10/ml. 2. 107 the only casualty on board the "FENELLA" being Engineer Roy Motion SM II 20 play who suffered leg injury through bomb explosion. I must mention that throughout all of these raids our Lewis gunners, F. Garrett and J. Cowell who were members of the crew and two Bren gunners, appointed to the ship by the Military Authorities at Southampton, all remained at their gun posts in very exposed positions and continued firing at the enemy aircraft. xis On going through the ship and making sure that every soul on "Isec board had been safely landed, I reported the fact to the Embark- edd ation Officer in charge of the jetty. I then suggested to him that if he could obtain tugs or trawlers, we were prepared to tow to "FENELLA" away from the jetty to render the berth available for other ships and beach her before she finally sank. He was in favour of this suggestion and tried to get tugs, but no vessels capable of towing were available. All the troops and the majority of "FENELLA's crew had by this time been embarked on board the steamer "CRESTED EAGLE." The Embarkation Officer then suggested, as nothing further could be done with regards to "FENELLA," that I and my Officers should proceed home in this steamer. Unfortunately, this ship was herself bombed and set on fire within ten minutes of leaving the jetty and had to be beached. I regret to say this caused a number of casualties, among them sixteen of the "FENELLA's crew who lost their lives. I am, Sir, (signed) Yours obediently, (sgd) W. CUBBON. Master. boats. 3rd.
