H.M.S. ESK. - Lieutenant-Commander Richard John Hullis Couch, R.N.
ESK made 6 trips, 3 being to Bray beach, during the
period 28th May - 3rd June, and brought to Dover about
4500 troops. On the 31st May, off Bray, she was forced,
by shell fire from shore batteries, to move westward along
the beach, ESK being holed in several places and having one
oil fuel tank pierced. She was also subjected to bombing
attacks on passage back to Dover, but avoided damage by the
use of speed and zig-zagging. On the 1st June she again
avoided damage off the entrance to Dunkirk by circling at
20 knots and when attacked later whilst taking survivors off
S.S. SCOTIA she drove off two bombers by the fire of 'B' and
'X' guns.

Gazette of 7th June, 1940).
WOLSEY completed 6 round trips to Dunkirk and on one
occasion remained 25 hours in the outer harbour and off-
shore frequently under air attack, as W/T link ship.
Carried a total of 3,650 troops between 0100/28 and 2330/31
when her D/G was out of action and she had to go to
Portsmouth for that and other repairs.

back to England. Ship continually being bombed by
aircraft. In one trip the crew discharged a large number
Dunkirk. of petrol cans, containing water, on to the jetty at
NEPHRITE - Cyril Gifford West, O.B.E.. Master.

Showed great gallantry whilst under bombing

Operation "DYNAMO" - Recommendations of Personnel.
NAVAL MEDICAL PARTIES.
Naval Medical Officers and ratings were drafted from
H.M.S. PEMBROKE for work in Dunkirk harbour and in the
larger personnel vessels on the 29th of May and 4th June.
The work carried out by the whole party was most valuable
and efficient, consisting as it did of treating casualties,
and operating where possible under exciting and adverse
circumstances calling for initiative and improvisation.
It happened that the Medical party sent to personnel
vessels voyaged in those whose civilian crews were showing
signs of loss of morale, there being a disagreeable air
of apprehension amongst the ship's companies. These Medical
parties in the midst of their preparations did their
utmost to instil better feeling amongst the officers and
men of these vessels. Their conduct in all cases was in
accordance with the highest traditions of the Serivce and
their profession.

Surgeon-Commander William Gordon Fitzpatrick. R.N.
With his party worked on Dunkirk Mole, in the
ST. HELIER, MAID OF ORLEANS, MANX MAN and the
PRINCESS MAUD on successive days. He was the
Senior Medical Officer of the whole party from
PEMBROKE and showed high organising abilities
and leadership, in adition to his efficient
personal treatment of casualties.

Captain William Vesey Hamilton Harris, M.V.O., D.S.C.,R.N. (Retd.)
This officer was solely responsible for the
organisation of the minesweeping vessels which took part
in the operation. These ships not only evacuated
troops from Dunkirk but also maintained routine sweeps
under most difficult circumstances. By his cheerful
leadership and tireless efforts, this officer was able
to maintain his entire force at my disposal, and thereby
contributed largely to the success of the enterprise.

Commodore John Stewart Gordon Fraser, D.S.O., R.N. (Retd.).
For tireless zeal, energy and good judgment in
dealing with the largely increased demand for repair and
maintenance arrangements of the Port during the operation
With limited facilities, the organisation built up by
Commodore Fraser met all requirements, and the arrange-
ments for which this officer was responsible contributed
in a major degree to the success of the enterprise.

Commander Francis John Lambert, D.S.C., R.N. (Retd.).
For exceptional zeal and devotion to duty. This
officer, as King's Harbour Master, had to control and
berth large numbers of ships, transports, skoots, and
small vessela, and direct their movements for the
purposes of repairs, fuelling, coaling, etc. To do
this Commander Lambert was almost continuously on duty
day and night throughout the operation, and his untiring
efforts contributed materially to the success of the
enterprise.

Lieutenant Commander (E) Weston Smith. R.N.
This officer worked throughout the operation with
exceptional and tireless energy and enthusiasm when in
charge of repairs and making good damage caused to
ships and boats. His skill as an Engineer Officer and
intelligent improvisation and adaptability in all
respects proved of inestimable value. His cheerful
bearing and leadership during the long hours by day and
night were an inspiration to all with whom he came in
contact, and contributed largely to the success of the
operation.

The transports of necessity provided a vulnerable and
easy target for enemy aircraft, but were required to make
their passages while subject to constant bombing attacks,
and frequently under shell fire.
They were required to berth in darkness in a confined
harbour obstructed by wrecks, and crowded with small craft
under way.

Throughout the operation he continued firing his
gun at the enemy planes, although being machine
gunned and bombed the whole time. He succeeded in
bringing down an enemy plane.

the soldiers had to wade out to the boats, and this

MAID OF ORLEANS - Gordon Dyer Walker, Master. (Decorated for this
operation in London Gazette 7th June, 1940).
This ship completed four trips to Dunkirk, and in
addition, three trips prior to Operation Dynamo to Calais
and Boulogne. A very large number of troops were brought
back to England. Ship continually being bombed by
aircraft. In one trip the crew discharged a large number
of petrol cans, containing water, on to the jetty at
Dunkirk.

NAVAL MEDICAL PARTIES.
Naval Medical Officers and ratings were drafted from
H.M.S. PEMBROKE for work in Dunkirk harbour and in the
larger personnel vessels on the 29th of May and 4th June.
The work carried out by the whole party was most valuable
and efficient, consisting as it did of treating casualties,
and operating where possible under exciting and adverse
circumstances calling for initiative and improvisation.
It happened that the Medical party sent to personnel
vessels voyaged in those whose civilian crews were showing
signs of loss of morale, there being a disagreeable air
of apprehension amongst the ship's companies. These Medical
parties in the midst of their preparations did their
utmost to instil better feeling amongst the officers and
men of these vessels. Their conduct in all cases was in
accordance with the highest traditions of the Serivce and
their profession.

Surgeon-Commander William Gordon Fitzpatrick, R.N.
With his party worked on Dunkirk Mole, in the
ST. HELIER, MAID OF ORLEANS, MANX MAN and the
PRINCESS MAUD on successive days. He was the
Senior Medical Officer of the whole party from
PEMBROKE and showed high organising abilities
and leadership, in adition to his efficient
personal treatment of casualties.

the beach, ESK being holed in several places and having one
oil fuel tank pierced. She was also subjected to bombing

occasion remained 25 hours in the outer harbour and off-
shore frequently under air attack, as W/T link ship.
Carried a total of 3,650 troops between 0100/28 and 2330/31
when her D/G was out of action and she had to go to
Portsmouth for that and other repairs.

herewith.

This rating displayed great coolness in action
as well as initiative under trying circumstances.
He was the Stoker P.O. in charge of No.1 Boller
Roomwhen many fragments of bomb which burst close along-
side the ship at about 1700 on 29th May pierced the bull.
One fragment entered the main stem pipe of No.1 boiler
and the boiler room immediately filled with superheated
steam. By his prompt acti n in sbutting off sprayers,
closing down, and evacuating the boiler room, be undoubt-
edly saved the lives of himself and the stoker who was
also in the boiler room, and probably prevented a serious
explosion.
On leaving the boiler room ne went forward to the
messdeck where he found fires burning on both the upper
and lower messdecks. He then took a leading fire part and in
dealing with these fires, most of forward repair
