in tow. In the leading M/B - the
Mermaiden - was Cdre. A.H. Taylor;
about half-way across he transferred

Arrived Dunkirk. Landed Cdre. Taylor
at Quai Felix Faure, at the far end
of the harbour.
[s/Lt. Pool found a motor cycle and
carried out a reconnaissance].
The Marlborough spent about 2 hours
directing small boats in and out of
harbour.

Some of the 12 slow M/B's arrived, as
did a French trawler, and embarked
troops.
4th June

Cdre. Taylor re-embarked and the
Marlborough proceeded. Half way out
of the harbour, the rudder and
propellers were lost by striking
submerged masonry. The Marlborough
was taken in tow by the M.A/S.B.7,
which, however, could not go astern,
and rammed the jetty; S/Lt. Pool
went aboard her to assist. Then
the tow parted, and S/Lt. Pool was
left behind in M.A/S.B.7. Three French
trawlers refused to take the Marlborough
in tow. Eventually the M/Y Gulzar
took her in tow.
The tow broke during the night but
was re-established.

Engineman W. Kennedy, R.N.R. ex 369.
Shell damaged and unseated the boiler, blew
the engine room with steam and hot water, flooding
steam pipe trunks, wrecked the feed pump, filling
the bilges, choking pumps with ashes. Engineman
Kennedy S devotion to duty and determination
ultimately enabled the ship to steam once more
with careful nursing. At all times his conduct
was exemplary in circumstances of great danger.

Sir,
I have the honour to bring to your notice Lieutenant
C.V. Brammell R.N.R. of H.M.S. "GULZAR".
2. On the evening of. 26/27th May, 1940, I was informed by
Vice Admiral, Dover, that H.M.S. "GULZAR" was placed at my
disposal to go to Calais to take water and stretchers, and to
bring back wounded.
3. Lieutenant Brammell brought his ship into Calais, it
being a very dark night, turned round, and secured with slip
lines alongside the steps of the Gare Maritime. All this was
done without noise, which enabled the officers landing to get
ashore unnoticed. On entering the channel, the complete absence
of any firing raised suspicions that the enemy might already have
taken the town, suspicions which were confirmed when the landing
party got ashore and had to return hurriedly to the yacht.
4. Lieutenant Brammell slipped his lines very quickly and
got away just in time, as a heavy fire from rifles and machine
guns was opened on the yacht from the neighbourhood of the
steps as she proceeded down the entrance.
5. It was due to the quiet discipline in his ship that the
landing party got ashore unnoticed, and due to his seamanship
and smartness that we got quickly away; any delay might have
entailed severe casualties.

The object of the expedition was the possible evacuation
"Grey Mist" in charge of forces employed.
Commander M/S (Commander W.V.H. Harris R.N.) sailed in
The orders to form the expedition were received at 1900,
and vessels sailed at 2130, the first five trawlers to leave,
towing motor boats.
Vessels were ordered to rendezvous at No. 3 Buoy Calais
Roads, and await instructions from Commander M/S. Destroyer
force was in support.
On receipt of signal which had been wrongly decoded, two
motor boats were ordered into Calais Harbour. These boats had
left for the harbour when a further signal was received that
Calais was to be held at all costs, and the signal was ordered to
be sent by hand to the Brigadier Commanding Forces. "Conidaw"
was ordered to proceed immediately and deliver the message.
A further signal was then received recalling all forces
to the Downs. On receipt of this signal "Botanic" and "Maretta"
were ordered to remain until boats and "Conidaw" returned, and
Destroyer escort was asked to be provided. All other vessels
returned to the Downs.
Reports from Lieutenant Commander P.F. Cammiade R.N.V.R.,
Sub. Lieutenant M.R. Mills R.N.V.R., and Skipper R. 9nelgrove,are
attached (la, lb, lc, ld).
There was constant enemy air activity during the night,
and a considerable amount of firing ashore.
26th May. Danlaying Yachts"Gulzar" and "Grey Mist"
to Calais P.M. with Commodore W.P. Gandell, P.S.T.O. France. Report

"Arley" ordered to Dunkirk as W/T link.
She 27th May. shelled off Calais, and returned with engineer
seriously was heavily wounded. Operation was then cancelled.
"Fyldea" sailed, buoy laying, under the orders of "Skipjack"
employed on mine sinking duties.

Skipper Lieutenant G.W. Robinson R.N.R., and Skipper Lieutenant
L. Lake R.N.R. are attached (Nos. 5a, 5b, and 5c). lages 517, 523
29th May. "Lord Grey" and "Clythness" to Dunkirk.
Report of Lieutenant J. Simson R.N.V.R. attached (No. 6) pagrosh
30th May. "Sargasso", "Gulzar", "Conidaw", "Chico",
and "Starlight Rays" sailed for Dunkirk, embarked troops, and
returned. "Chico" did especially good work in bringing back
217 troops. This vessel is only 70' long. All ships returned
safely with troops.
31st May. "Sargasso", "Gulzar", and "Chico" to Dunkirk.
"Chico" employed ferrying, and was responsible for nearly a 1,000
troops being embarked. All returned safely with troops.
"Fyldea" and "Brock" to beaches with motor boat. "Brock"
damaged by bombs, and ordered to return. Report of Sub. Lieutenant
K.H.G. Roberts R.N.V,R. attached (No. 7). "Fyldea" returned with
troops.

was decided to approach the entrance to the Port from the North.
Inder a heavy barrage of H.E. and shrapnel fire the Skipper of the travler
ucceeded in entering the port and taking up position alongside the Quat
mitime - Eastern end. As there was no labour or assistance to be
btained from the Quai the crew of the trawler started to discharge the
argo of ammunition. This entailed hauling the boxes of ammunition by
land from the deck of the trawler to the top of the Qual, a distance of
ome 22 feet, and dragging them across the Duai to a place of safety .

rotection of any sort and none of the enemy were equipped with steel
elmets. The discharge continued orderly and efficiently until ordered to
top by Commodore Gandell, R.N., who decided that the danger was too great,

'ire from the enemy, but with great skill the Skipper succeeded in bringing

I have the honour to bring to your notice Lieutenant
2. On the evening of 26/27th May, 1940, I was informed by
Vice Admiral, Dover, that H.M.S. "GULZAR" was placed at my
disposal to go to Calais to take water and stretchers, and to
bring back wounded.
3. Lieutenant Brammell brought his ship into Calais, it
being a very dark night, turned round, and secured with slip
lines alongside the steps of the Gare Maritime. All this was
done without noise, which enabled the officers landing to get
ashore unnoticed. On entering the channel, the complete absence
of any firing raised suspicions that the enemy might already have
taken the town, suspicions which were confirmed when the landing
party got ashore and had to return hurriedly to the yacht.
4. Lieutenant Brammell slipped his lines very quickly and
got away just in time, as a heavy fire from rifles and machine
guns was opened on the yacht from the neighbourhood of the
steps as she proceeded down the entrance.
5. It was due to the quiet discipline in his ship that the
landing party got ashore unnoticed, and due to his seamanship
and smartness that we got quickly away; any delay might have
entailed severe casualties.

We took 36 French soldiers aboard and left Dunkirk at
0000 approx.
We had a quiet journey back and arrived at Ramsgate at 0400

"MARLBOROUGH" with special orders to Rendezvous with Admiral Taylor,
who had left at 1600.
We contacted him at about 2100 in mid channel and took him
aboard, then proceeding on our way to Dunkirk.

into the inner basin, under Admiral Taylor's directions.

OPERATION "DYNAMO" IS COMMENCED

and blazing lights made them an easy target. On the 26th May the hospital
carriers St. Andrew and St. Julien sailed at 1054 for Dunkirk, but coming under
fire from the guns of Gravelines, they returned to Dover in company with the
P/V Maid of Orleans.
The hospital carriers Isle of Guernsey and Worthing sailed from Dover at
noon and were bombed when off, Calais; nevertheless, that night, flood-lit by
the fires which raged in the docks and town of Dunkirk, they each embarked
about 300 stretcher cases.
Admiralty call for cutters and whalers
All these troops and casualties, it should be noted, were lifted from the quays
of Dunkirk harbour. Evacuation from the beaches did not commence until
24 hours later, and then only in a very small way, using ships' boats. On the
26th May, says Vice-Admiral Ramsay, the only inshore craft available
were

such as drifters, and motor boats from the Contraband Control Base at Rams-
gate; the only ones capable of lifting personnel direct from a beach being the
boats from Ramsgate." The Admiralty had been asked for a supply of small
boats, especially whalers and cutters, but there remained the difficulty of
arranging for the personnel to man them¹. This request led at 2028, on 26th
May, to an Admiralty signal to the Home Ports asking how many cutters and
whalers could be made available for immediate service under Vice-Admiral,
Dover.²
Sea and air patrols
Meanwhile, at 1937, C. in C. Nore had been requested to use all available
forces to cover Operation Dynamo that night.
In conformity with these directions Allied fighters maintained continuous
patrols, from 1700 to 2130, on the line Calais-Dunkirk.3.
Germans occupy Calais
That very night, however, the gallant defence of Calais came to an end.
The yacht Gulzar had gone there with water and stretchers, to bring back
wounded. She secured alongside the Gare Maritime and sent a party on shore
to investigate. The town was found to be in German hands, and the Gulzar
made a hasty departure under fire. On the way out, however, in response to
a hail, she stopped, and brought off 3 officers and 48 men from the end of the
breakwater.⁴

with troops, only to be cast adrift and left floating empty out to seaward¹.
Later that evening Captain Howson got in touch with Rear-Admiral Wake-
Walker, then in the Worcester, and obtained permission to embark the following
day in a motor boat off the beaches SO as to prevent a recurrence of this waste
of beaching craft².
In spite of the difficulties and shortcomings emphasised in the above reports
great progress was being made. In fact, beach evacuation reached its peak
on this day; 29,500 troops were lifted from the beaches (as against 24,300
from the harbour) ; and some 50 ships, including destroyers, minesweepers,
skoots, trawlers, drifters, personnel and special service vessels, were engaged
continuously in the arduous work.

During the afternoon of the 3rd the French authorities transmitted the figure
of French troops still remaining in Dunkirk. This was about 30,000, a pro-
portion of whom belonged to other than combatant units. The total capacity
of the lifting force, if used to the full, was 30,000, but this was about 5,000 more
than the facilities within the port would permit of being embarked in 4 hours,
even if the French troops moved with the greatest rapidity at all points of
embarkation. On previous occasions there had been some instances of difficulty
in persuading French troops to embark otherwise than as complete units.
Vice-Admiral Ramsay consequently impressed on the French liaison officers
the necessity of speed, and he added a number of French officers and ratings
to the augmented pier parties which were despatched to Dunkirk at 2200, in

Meanwhile, there had been some heavy liftings of troops from the East Pier
and caused great congestion in the entrance. The flow of French troops to
the East Pier was better than on the preceding night, though there were some
bad pauses.
The first ship to arrive off the pier was the destroyer Whitshed at 2215, with
Commander H. J. Buchanan, R.A.N. and pier party on board. In consequence
of the fresh easterly wind and the westgoing tide the ship could not get alongside
the East Pier, where there was nobody who could be persuaded to take a line.
However, after disembarking part of her pier party into Rear-Admiral Wake-
Walker's M.T.B. for transfer to the pier, she got her bows alongside the per-
sonnel ship Autocarrier and her stern alongside the Sabre and commenced
embarking troops. The Sabre had been working since 30th May with a com-
pass damaged and rendered unreliable by a shell splinter, and had been led
across by the Venomous. She got away from the East Pier at 0025 with 592
troops and followed other ships towards England until they were lost to sight
near U buoy at the south end of the South Falls. This was within hearing of
the North Goodwin Light Vessel, which the Sabre located by sound, subse-
quently proceeding from buoy to buoy until she reached Dover at 0500.
When the Autocarrier left in her turn at 0035 she carried 712 French troops.
The Canterbury left ten minutes later with 659, while the Côte Argent had
shoved off from the pier five minutes earlier with 1,349 troops. After these
three practically simultaneous sailings of personnel ships some time elapsed
before another bunch got away. The Princess Maud had berthed at the
extreme end of the pier, and sailed at 0150 with 1,270 troops and dogs of all
kinds" that managed to get aboard. The Lady of Mann which berthed about
the time when the first three personnel vessels left, took 1,244 troops at 0200.
The Tynwald seems to have been the last to leave the East Pier. She sailed
at 0305 with the record lift, only equalled by the Scotia on 29th May, of 3,000
French troops : in 4 trips she had evacuated 8,953 men. With a single ex-
ception all destroyers had now gone; the Malcolm went at 0245 with 736
troops, Vanquisher at 0240 with 414, and the Venomous, which had arrived at
0245 to find the harbour very congested and ordered to wait outside until
0130, 5 took out no less than 1,200 troops. In four was days the Venomous had made
trips, evacuating 4,410 men in all,

French Coast. I beg to submit the name of A.B.,Gipson (1.134)
for special mention who volunteered, and landed at Calais
at the Gare Maritime with Captain Robinson R.A. to assist
locating wounded, and afterwards was forced to return by onemy
fire.

Sir,
I have the honour to bring to your notice Licutenant
C.V. Brammell R.N.R. of H.M.S. "GULZAR".
2. On the evening of 26/27th May, 1940, I was informed by
Vice Admiral, Dover, that H.M.S. "GULZAR" was placed at my
disposal to go to Calais to take water and stretchers, and to
bring back wounded.
3. Lieutenant Brammell brought his ship into Calais, it
being a very dark night, turned round, and secured with slip
lines alongside the steps of the Gare Maritime. All this was
done without noise, which enabled the officers landing to get
ashore unnoticed. On entering the channel, the complete absence
of any firing raised suspicions that the enemy might already have
taken the town, suspicions which were confirmed when the landing
party got ashore and had to return hurriedly to the yacht.
4. Lieutenant Brammell slipped his lines very quickly and
got away just in time, as a heavy fire from rifles and machine
guns was opened on the yacht from the neighbourhood of the
steps as she proceeded down the entrance.
5. It was due to the quiet discipline in his ship that the
landing party got ashore unnoticed, and due to his seamanship
and smartness that we got quickly away; any delay might have
entailed severe casualties.

The object of the expedition was the possible evacuation
Commander M/S (Commander W.V.H. Harris R.N.) sailed in
"Grey Mist" in charge of forces employed.
The orders to form the expedition were received at 1900,
and vessels sailed at 2130, the first five trawlers to leave,
towing motor boats.
Vessels were ordered to rendezvous at No. 3 Buoy Calais
Roads, and await instructions from Commander M/S. Destroyer
force was in support.
On receipt of signal which had been wrongly decoded, two
motor boats were ordered into Calais Harbour. These boats had
left for the harbour when a further signal was received that
Calais was to be held at all costs, and the signal was ordered to
be sent by hand to the Brigadier Commanding Forces. "Conidaw"
was ordered to proceed immediately and deliver the message.
A further signal was then received recalling all forces
to the Downs. On receipt of this signal "Botanic" and "Maretta"
were ordered to remain until boats and "Conidaw" returned, and
Destroyer escort was asked to be provided. All other vessels
returned to the Downs.

Sub. Lieutenant M.R. Mills R.N.V.R., and Skipper R. Smelgrove,are
attached (la, lb, lc, ld).
There was constant enemy air activity during the night,
and a considerable amount of firing ashore.

to Calais with Commodore W.P. Gandell, P.S.T.O. France. Report

27th May.
"Arley" ordered to Dunkirk as W/T link.
She was heavily shelled off Calais, and returned with engineer
seriously wounded. Operation was then cancelled.
"Fyldea" sailed, buoy laying, under the orders of "Skipjack"
employed on mine sinking duties.

at Ramsgate en route. Reports of Lieutenant R. Bill R.N.,
Skipper Lieutenant G.W. Robinson R.N.R., and Skipper Lieutenant
L. Lake R.N.R. are attached (Nos. 5a, 5b, and 5c). pages 517, 523
29th May. "Lord Grey" and "Clythness" to Dunkirk.
Report of Lieutenant J. Simson R.N.V.R. attached (No.
30th May. "Sargasso", "Gulzar", "Conidaw", "Chico",
and "Starlight Rays" sailed for Dunkirk, embarked troops, and
returned.
"Chico" did especially good work in bringing back
217 troops. This vessel is only 70' long. All ships returned
safely with troops.
31st May. "Sargasso", "Gulzar", and "Chico" to Dunkirk.
"Chico" employed ferrying, and was responsible for nearly a 1,000
troops being embarked. All returned safely with troops.
"Fyldea" and "Brock" to beaches with motor boat. "Brock"

I have the honour to bring to your notice the names
of the following officers and men serving under the command of
Vice-Admiral, Dover.
In the first category I would place :-
Skipper William Henry Pollock
Second Hand Thomas H. Christian, R.N.R. LT/HO.
Seaman William Bullen, R.N.R. LT/HO.
all of H.M. Drifter "LORD HOWE", and submit that their gallantry
may be suitably rewarded.
In the second category I would place Lieutenant
C.V. Branmall, R.N.R., of H.M.S. "GULZAR", and submit that the
enclosed despatch on his services may be officially recorded.

mixtime - Eastern end. As there was no labour or assistance to be
btained from the Quai the crew of the trawler started to discharge the
argo of ammunition. This entailed hauling the boxes of ammunition by

rotection of any sort and none of the enemy were equipped with steel

'ire from the enemy, but with great skill the Skipper succeeded in bringing

Sir,
I have the honour to bring to your notice Licutenant
C.V. Brammell, R.N.R. of H.M.S. "GULZAR".
2. On the evening of 26/27th May, 1940, I was informed by
Vice Admiral, Dover, that H.M.S. "GULZAR" was placed at my
disposal to go to Calais to take water and stretchers, and to
bring back wounded.
3. Lieutenant Brammell brought his ship into Calais, it
being a very dark night, turned round, and secured with slip
lines alongside the steps of the Gare Maritime. All this was
done without noise, which enabled the officers landing to get
ashore unnoticed. On entering the channel, the complete absence
of any firing raised suspicions that the enemy might already have
taken the town, suspicions which were confirmed when the landing
party got ashore and had to return hurriedly to the yacht.
4. Lieutenant Brammell slipped his lines very quickly and
got away just in time, as a heavy fire from rifles and machine
guns was opened on the yacht from the neighbourhood of the
steps as she proceeded down the entrance.
5. It was due to the quiet discipline in his ship that the
landing party got ashore unnoticed, and due to his seamanship
and smartness that we got quickly away; any delay might have
entailed severe casualties.

Reference my report on operations carried out by
"Gulzar" during the period 21st/27th May, 1940, on the
French Coast. I beg to submit the name of A.B.,Gipson (T.124)
for special mention who volunteered, and landed at Calais
at the Gare Maritime with Captain Robinson R.A. to assist
locating wounded, and afterwards was forced to return by enemy
fire.
