31st May.
I was detailed to join H.M.S. "Jutland" (commanded
by Lt. Commdr. Clements) as first officer. The ship
proceeded on orders to Dunkirk and returned on the
following morning (1st June) to Ramsgate with 180
French troops on board. A detailed report of this
R.N.R. passage has already been made by Lt. Commdr. Clements,
2nd June.
Spent day fitting out and provisioning M.V. "Paulette"
but as ship was not ready to proceed to sea by the ordered
time I was not able to leave for Dunkirk.
3rd June.
Took command of M/V "Sea Roamer", 20 ton private
0930 yacht, and proceeded with provisioning, arming and
getting ship ready for sea. Stood by ship until -

Orders received to proceed to Dunkirk.
1840
Under way with 1st officer of H.M.S. Tilly aboard.
1850
Officer placed aboard H.M.S. Tilly; first course
for Dunkirk set.

Fixed Green Light in position 57° 09 42N, 2° 09 42E
extinguished, also Dunkirk Channel Buoys obscured by
smoke from burning town. Decided to proceed at "dead
slow" on a direct course to Dunkirk.
4th June.

Off Eastern beaches of Dunkirk. No signs of B.E.F.

Took off two French soldiers from derelict Dutch
schoot "Horst". Proceeded to patrol beach, at distance
of about 100 yds out, for about 21/2 miles N. of Dunkirk.
Megaphone was used for hailing shore, but no sign of
B.E.F.

Still no signs of any troops, so proceeded on return
voyage.

29th May. Received orders to proceed aboard H.M. Schoot Tilly
to relieve the Commanding Officer, Lt. Cdr. Clements,
R.N.R. We proceeded to sea on 15 X route to Dunkirk
with two cutters in tow.
30th
May. Arriving off Bray Dunes during the early hours of
the morning, sent ashore cuttersfor troops; carried out
embarkation of troops with cutters and small rowing
boats manned by Royal Engineers. After filling up
instructed cutters to carry on helping other vessels
to embark troops. Returned to Ramsgate. On this
voyage we were subjected to heavy bombing at the
entrance to Dunkirk channel.
31st May. Proceeded once again to sea in H.M.S. Tilly during
afternoon and went to Dunkirk on the same route, 15 X,
arriving off the East Beach Dunkirk at dark; I again
had two cutters. On arrival contacted six Southend
trawlers - who towed the cutters ashore and kept embarking
troops until we lost contact in the dark, so proceeded
to the harbour; at entrance saw an H.M. Sloop coming out
who informed me he could find no troops inside - so we
returned to Ramsgate arriving daylight 1st June. On
this voyage we only encountered occasional shelling on
the Bast Beach.
1st June. After discharging troops, received order to return
to Dunkirk at once - again sailing on 15X route. As we
approached the channel entrance several vessels informed
us that there were no troops on the beaches and that the
harbour was full of vessels, so we decided to wait for
darkness as French trawlers told several vessels to
stand out again. We and other vessels in the vicinity
were these making off on the approach of three
then bombed by dive bombers for about twenty
British fighters. so took her in tow and proceeded made us
minutes, We found R.F.A. Motor lighter back X to 95
broken down, having several bombing attacks We arrived on back and
Ramsgate, vessels near us on the return journey.

2nd June. Dunkirk At 6.30 p.m. received orders
East with H.M. Schoot Tilly and to be return to beach
on of harbour at midnight, so proceeded off at the
could 15X route. On arrival scanned the beach once
see no sign of troops or boats and but
lost contact with M/Y Sea Roamer, who was as our we tender, had
we proceeded into the harbour which was full of war
vessels and troopships. We were then told to get
out of the harbour by an M.T.B. as no troops were
coming down the piers, so lay just outside West
Pier until ordered to proceed back to Ramsgate by
H.M. Destroyer laying off entrance.
3rd June. Arrived back Ramsgate 8 a.m. On this voyage
we were subjected to shelling off the East beach
and in the channel on leaving.
I cannot speak too highly of the excellent
behaviour of the ship's company on all occasions, in
the prompt way they carried out their duties and
their untiring efforts to make the troops comfortable
with hot tea and food under most cramped and
difficult conditions.

Identity of crashing aircraft uncertain, though 5 at least were presumably German.
1915. Arrived Dunkirk Roads. Beach and shipping subjected to severe bombardment
from shore batteries and aircraft.
1930. Attempted to beach boats, and take off men, but abandoned idea - too much
ground swell, and semi-submerged trucks, army wagons and other equipment left,
destroyed by the B.E.F. on beach, endangered the safety of ships.
2130. Ordered ships to proceed to outside of jetty, instructing them to fill up
with soldiers and to ferry same to any larger ships unable to close harbour or beach.
Each ship was instructed to transport approximately 30 to 40 men (approximate total -
200) and they were transferred to H.V. Tilly and other ships cruising empty outside
harbour entrance.
2240. Instructed ships to keep permanently closed up and to return to inside of
harbour as swell made embarkation of troops from outside of jetty too difficult.
Contact between Bawley boats maintained by signal of one short flash every two
minutes. Formation preserved.
2310. Mole and harbour severely shelled. Morale of the soldiers on all occasions
I was there, was superb, and though exhausted and under constant fire, their only
thoughts were for the wounded among them, and of saving any equipment possible.
2350. Embarked approximately 200 men; transferred same to the trawler Sarah Hayes
and various other craft returning to England not fully laden. Instructed convoy
to continue ferry work but if separated from me to return to Ramsgate laden with
soldiers.
1.6.40.
0140. Re-entered harbour; jetty crammed with British soldiers but no ships whatever
alongside. Started loading troops, sending back to shore two German prisoners
attempting to get to England, leaving them in charge of a Lance Corporal.
0200 - 0250. Jetty shelled, bombed and machine-gunned by enemy - very few casualties.
0300. Proceeded to Ramsgate fully laden with soldiers of 1st Division including the
Colonel in Charge of the Worcesters and Officers of the Camerons, accompanied by
Bawley boat Resolute. Arrived at Ramsgate 0930 approximately on 1.6.40.
CONDITION OF BAWLEY BOATS AT RAMSGATE.
DEFENDER.
Stem damaged. Returned with approximately 60 men.
RELIANCE.
Damaged side. Returned with 80 men.
LETITIA.
Undamaged. Returned towing Renown until latter was blown up.

Steering gear out of order; towed back by Sarah Hayes.

Engine trouble. Returned with approximately 40 men.

Mined and sunk off Dunkirk - all hands lost. (understand the 30

I was detailed to join H.M.S. "Jutland" (commanded
by Lt. Commdr. Clements) as first officer. The ship
proceeded on orders to Dunkirk and returned on the
following morning (1st June) to Ramsgate with 180
French troops on board. A detailed report of this
passage has already been made by Lt. Commdr. Clements,
R.N.R.
2nd June.
Spent day fitting out and provisioning M.V. "Paulette"
but as ship was not ready to proceed to sea by the ordered
time I was not able to leave for Dunkirk.
3rd June.
Took command of M/V "Sea Roamer", 20 ton private
0930 yacht, and proceeded with provisioning, arming and
getting ship ready for sea. Stood by ship until -

Orders received to proceed to Dunkirk.

to relieve the Commanding Officer, Lt. Cdr. Clements,
R.N.R. We proceeded to sea on 15 X route to Dunkirk
with two cutters in tow.
30th May. Arriving off Bray Dunes during the early hours of
the morning, sent ashore cuttersfor troops; carried out
embarkation of troops with cutters and small rowing
boats manned by Royal Engineers. After filling up
instructed cutters to carry on helping other vessels
to embark troops. Returned to Ramsgate. On this
voyage we were subjected to heavy bombing at the
entrance to Dunkirk channel.
31st
May. Proceeded once again to sea in H.M.S. Tilly during
afternoon and went to Dunkirk on the same route, 15 X,
arriving off the East Beach Dunkirk at dark; I again
had two cutters. On arrival contacted six Southend
trawlers of who towed the cutters ashore and kept embarking
troops until we lost contact in the dark, SO proceeded
to the harbour; at entrance saw an H.M. Sloop coming out
who informed me he could find no troops inside - so On we
returned to Ramsgate arriving daylight 1st June.

2nd June. At 6.30 p.m. received orders to return to
Dunkirk with H.M. Schoot Tilly and be off the beach
East of harbour at midnight, so proceeded at once
on 15X route. On arrival scanned the beach but
could see no sign of troops or boats and as we had
lost contact with M/Y See Roamer, who was our tender,
we proceeded into the harbour which was full of war
vessels and troopships. The were then told to get
out of the harbour by an N.T.B. as no troops were
coming down the piers, so lay just outside West
Pier until ordered to proceed back to Ramsgate by
Hallo Destroyer laying off entrance.

I cannot speak too highly of the excellent
behaviour of the ship's company on all occasions, in
their untiring efforts to make the troops comfortable

Sea and Air Patrols
The principal patrol line covered in the morning of the 27th May by Fighter
Command, was Calais-Dunkirk, as it was not known that the Calais garrison
had ceased fire. From 1450 onwards, however, Calais fell out of the picture,
and it became possible to concentrate fighter protection more exclusively on
the work of evacuation³. Sixteen squadrons, varying in strength from 9 to 20
aircraft, were engaged on these activities from 0500-2130; patrols were, how-
ever, limited to squadron strength. Most squadrons carried out 2 patrols,
and 287 sorties in all were flown during the day.4
To cover the passage of ships between Dunkirk and the Downs destroyer
patrols had been established to the northward during the forenoon, and Vice-
Admiral, Dover, asked for 6 additional destroyers to strengthen the Dover
forces. The Admiralty immediately ordered 4 destroyers from the Western
Approaches Command, and 2 from the Portsmouth Command, to proceed
to Dover.⁵
Ex-Dutch skoots for Dunkirk
Other vessels were on their way to Dunkirk during the day, among them
being 15 skoots⁶. Of these the Lena, Hebe II, and later the Oranje, arrived
off the beaches and embarked troops during the night of 27th/28th May the
Abel Tasman, Alice and Kaap Falga, loaded with ammunition and food,
arrived off La Panne early in the morning of 28th May; the Hilda and Doggers-
bank reached Dunkirk by noon the 28th May, and were sent to the beaches;
while the remainder⁷, in error, returned to the Downs, after having got within
a few miles of Dunkirk.

S.N.O. Dunkirk's signals had therefore a big result; but owing to the diffi-
culty of passing orders at night in a shattered harbour his decision to divert
vessels to the beaches had unforeseen repercussions, and it was associated with
a false report that Dunkirk had fallen, and the failure of one personnel vessel
and 7 skoots to reach the beaches that night. The circumstances are described
below.
The P/V Canterbury, which had entered Dunkirk harbour at 2000, left at
2058 with 457 troops, including 140 stretcher cases. Before leaving, she was
ordered by the Sea Transport Officer to turn back ships attempting to
enter Dunkirk the order, evidently intended to divert ships to the beaches,
was misunderstood. In the Dunkirk road, the Canterbury passed the order
to the P/V Maid of Orleans and to the H/C's Isle of Thanet and Worthing, and
those vessels thereupon turned back to Dover. Later the order became
definitely garbled, for the skoot Tilly (which was in company with the 4 skoots
Hondsrug, Jutland, Patria and Brandaris) met the Canterbury (in company
with the 2 hospital carriers) 8 or 9 miles from Dunkirk, and received from her
the signal "Dunkirk is in enemy hands. Keep clear." This signal was
variously recorded by some of the other skoots, as Dunkirk has fallen. Re-
turn"; and all five of them, as well as the skoots Bornrif and Twente, did in
fact return to the Downs, although the Jutland and the Patria first closed
Nieuport Bank buoy in an unsuccessful endeavour to obtain more definite
information. Some of the skoots, in turn, promulgated this false report to
other ships, notably to the P/V Dorrien Rose; this ship, which received the
signal, unsafe to approach Dunkirk," did at first alter course to the north-
ward, but, shortly after, again set course for Dunkirk. It was subsequently
thought by some of the vessels concerned that the false information had been
passed by fifth columnists," though there is very little proof of this.³

had all come under fire from the shore guns at Calais and Gravelines. At
0415 on the 28th May the Queen of the Channel, loaded with 904. troops, was
attacked by one aircraft; 3 or 4 bombs were dropped, which straddled the ship
abaft the mainmast and broke her back, the starboard propeller shaft and the
rudder. By good fortune the Dorrien Rose, en route for Dunkirk, was in the
vicinity and rescued the troops : the Queen of the Channel sank about 1/2 hour
later. The St. Seiriol, which left Dunkirk at about 0415 with 494 troops,
reached Folkestone in safety.
Civilian crews feel the strain
Some 45 personnel vessels were used during operation "Dynamo"
Of these eight were sunk, at least six were so damaged by bombing or gunfire
as to render them unfit for further use during the operation, and two were
damaged in collision. Nine of the largest of these personnel vessels had been
engaged prior to "Dynamo" in operations at Dunkirk, Calais and Boulogne,
and their Captains and crews were beginning to feel the strain when Operation
"Dynamo" started.
Thus it was that the Master of the Canterbury, which had already completed
2 round trips to Dunkirk in operation "Dynamo", reported, on the 28th May,
that he was too worn out to make a third trip. The P.S.T.O. went on board
and explained the gravity of the situation to the Master, and the Canterbury
sailed at 0930 the next day. On her return voyage from Dunkirk she was
bombed and damaged, and after landing her 1960 troops went into dock for
repairs. In the 3 trips she made the Canterbury brought back 4,416 troops;
her Master, Captain C. A. Hancock, was awarded the D.S.C.
Personnel vessels not to be employed during full daylight
On the 28th May, however, it had become apparent that development of
the German air threat over the evacuation area, and the increasing artillery
fire from shore batteries covering the sea approaches to Dunkirk, prohibited
the employment of personnel and similar vessels during daylight, until the
position was restored, and that evacuation from Dunkirk by day must for the
moment be confined to warships and small vessels².
It was not, therefore, until later in the day, that the P/V Royal Daffodil
sailed for Dunkirk, and eight other personnel vessels and a hospital carrier³
received their sailing orders during the afternoon and evening.
The northern Route Y was by this time in general use⁴, but ships proceeding
from Dover to Dunkirk were ordered to use the southern and shorter Route Z,
if the passage from Calais Bell buoy to Dunkirk could be made in darkness.
N.O.I.C. Ramsgate responsible for servicing skoots
In these circumstances some 20 skoots reached Dunkirk, or arrived off the
beaches during the day and evening of the 28th May; others were on the way.
Their speed varied, but most of them were very slow. Eight of them went
into Dunkirk harbour⁵, and four to Bray beach⁶. The Abel Tasman, loaded
with ammunition, the Alice and Kaap Falga, loaded with food, and three

M/B Sceneshifter swamped and lost
The M/B Silver Moon, from Ramsgate, arrived off the beaches at 0800 and
ferried troops to ships at anchor. Without charts or compass she returned to
Ramsgate that night. The M/B Sceneshifter, on arrival, was rushed by French
troops, swamped, and became a total loss.
M/B Viewfinder dragged aground and lost
The six motor yachts, Advance, Bobeli, Elizabeth Green, Hanora, Reda and
Viewfinder sailed from Dover for La Panne beach and were machine-gunned
from the air off Gravelines. They arrived off La Panne beach at about
1500/29, and at once began towing whalers full of troops to off-lying ships.
At 1830, the Viewfinder was dragged aground by Belgian soldiers and became
a total loss.
M/B's Hanora and Bobeli abandoned
At 1900, the Hanora fouled her propeller and was abandoned; her crew
transferred to the Elizabeth Green and thence to the minesweeper Lydd. At
1900 also, the dr. Sabre requisitioned the Advance and embarked in her a W/T
transmitter and 2 operators for transportation to G.H.Q. at La Panne. The
Reda, having ferried troops, sailed for Ramsgate at 2200 with 21 troops on
board. The Bobeli having received some damage while alongside a destroyer
which suddenly went full ahead on account of an air attack, subsequently
fouled her screw and rudder; she made fast. to the minesweeper Albury, but
was abandoned when the Albury departed and became stranded on the beach.
The Elizabeth Green and Advance sailed in company that night for Ramsgate.
M/B Glitter II brings drinking water
The Glitter II arrived off Bray beach at 1600 on the 29th May, loaded with
tins of fresh water. She then ferried troops. Next day she lost her rudder and
was towed to Dover by a drifter.
M/B Queen of England sunk
A number of other small motor craft left Southend, Sheerness or Dover for
the beaches on the 29th May, but did not arrive until 30th May. Among them
was the Shamrock, and in company with her were the Princess Maud, Canvey
Queen and Queen of England. On the way over on the night of the 29th/30th
May the Queen of England was rammed amidships by the skoot Tilly and sank
immediately ; her crew were picked up by the Shamrock and transferred to
the Tilly1. The remaining three motor boats were all abandoned and lost next
day after ferrying troops to various destroyers, among them the Anthony;
the Canvey Queen and Shamrock fouled their propellers, and the Princess Maud
went aground.
The Mirasol², alongside Dunkirk mole, was damaged by a near miss. She
was taken in tow by a trawler, but later sank.
Other M/B's that sailed for the beaches on 29th May
The Triton and Silver Queen, with 6 motor launches in company, sailed for
La Panne at 2200. Three of the motor launches broke down on the way over
I Shamrock's report, unconfirmed. The name of the vessel is in doubt; the matter is
not referred to in Tilly's report.
