The Argyllshire was about 2 miles east
of S. buoy in company with the same
two trawlers.
Many trawlers and other small craft
were in the vicinity.
Argyllshire commenced an attack on
what appeared to be a S/M.

The Stella Rigel crossed Argyllshire's
bows and the latter reduced speed,
the target then being about 1800
yards on the starboard beam.
Shortly afterwards, there was an
explosion aft in the Argyllshire,
caused, it is believed by a torpedo
which struck her on the starboard
quarter.
She sank immediately.
5 survivors were picked up by the
Malabar (See Appx. J, signal J.31);
they were the Captain, an officer, a
signalman, a W/T Ope rator and an
able seaman.
The Malabar transferred the five
survivors to a "drifter" (signal J.31d)
i.e. the Stella Rigel.

Report Covering Patrol from the South Falls Buoy
to the West Hinder - May 29th to June 3rd inclusive.
H.M. Trawlers "STELLA RIGEL" and "LORD MELCHETT".
Both ships did extraordinarily well, there being
practically no sleep for anybody on board for over four
days.
I have pleasure in bringing to your notice bearing
and general behaviour of:-
Skipper R.C. Taylor, R.N.R., "LORD MELCHETT"
Skipper L.P. Keable, R.N.R., "STELLA RIGEL",
upon whose conduct throughout, their Unit Officers informed
me, they were unable to give them sufficient praise.
Sub. -Lieutenant J.W. Wykeham, R.N.V.R. had previously back seen as
Neither Lieutenant W.H. Ward, R.N.V.R. nor
anything of war, and Sub.-Lieutenant Wykeham came
if he had been to a football match.

Report on patrol of May 29th to June 3rd.
At 1515 on May 29th we cast off and proceeded out of harbour,
icking up H.M.T. "Argyleshire" and "Lord Melchett" outside. We
rrived off the position at 2200 and proceeded to our patrol area east
f S. Buoy. At 0030 on May 30th we observed a vessel stopped which got
nder way as we approached. As she did not answer the challenge we
ave chase and eventually stopped her. She proved to be M.S. "Ricas"
rom Ostend with troops.
At 0750 we picked up "Argyleshire" and returned to area of
Walls Buoy for patrol.
At 2100 on 31st May we received orders from "Argyleshire" to
atrol S. Buoy to West Hinder during night.
At 0230, having lost touch with "Argyleshire", and having
efound her, we were closing when she was struck by a torpedo and sank
mmediately. We lowered the boat and recovered five survivors, the two
fficers, the signalman, wireless operator and one Able Seaman. During
he course of the rescue a plane circled overhead and dropped parachute
lares, but took no action. The Captain reported having seen a
ubmarine crash dive, and while manoeuvring to attack he was struck
midships by a torpedo. We received instructions to land survivors at
earest port and proceeded towards Ramsgate. Artificial respiration

Whilst heading from T.Buoy towards Dunkirk in answer

Pioneer that M.T.B. was approaching, we cleared for action

We went alongside M.T.B. took survivors and casualties off.
Report of action has been given to F.O.I.C. Harwich also
with report for Commanding Officer of M.T.B. Casualties

Attacked by enemy dive bombers first one dived and
machine gunned us, the second one dropped bombs, not both

REPORT OF ENQUIRY INTO LOSS OF H.M. TRAWLER
"ARGYLLSHIRE" IN OPERATION "DYNAMO".
Sir,
With reference to A.L. M.L. 6245/40 dated 1st August,
1940, be pleased to lay before Their Lordships the following
report resulting from an enquiry into the loss of H.M.A/S
Trawler "Argyllshire" on 1st June, 1940.
2. Sub. Lieut. J.S. Weddle, R.N.R., who was in command
of "Argyllshire" was examined on 17th September, 1940.
3. At about 0245 on 1st June "Argyllshire" was about
2 miles E. of "S" Buoy in company with trawlers "Lord Melchett"
and "Stella Rigel. Many trawlers and other small craft were
in the vicinity.
"Argyllshire" commenced an attack on what appeared to
be a submarine. At 0250 "Stella Rigel" crossed "Argyllshire's"
bows and the latter reduced speed, the target then being about
1800 yards on her starboard beam. Shortly afterwards there
was an explosion aft in "Argyllshire" due, it is believed, to
a torpedo which struck her on the starboard quarter. The bows

stood up at about 45°, all fittings on bridge broke loose and
ship went down stern first. Two to three minutes later she was
seen with bows to the break of forecastle protruding vertically
out of the water. She then sank and disappeared in about 20
fathoms.
4. Asdic gear was intact when ship sank; 5 depth charges
set to 200 feet went down with her.
5. Confidential Books and SPs, except two or three in
Wireless Cabinet, and one Secret Mine Chart which was on bridge,
were in steel chest in Commanding Officer's Cabin and went down
with the ship.
6. The imperceptible time during which this ship remained
afloat after the explosion precludes the possibility of learning
anything as to the behaviour of material generally, but it is

thought that if this class of vessel were fitted with & water-
tight bulkhead between the Boiler and Engine Rooms there is
likelihood of their remaining afloat considerably longer in the

event of the fore or after compartments being flooded.

SATURDAY, 1ST JUNE
GERMANS RENEW THEIR HEAVY AIR EFFORT
E-Boat activity : sinking of the Stella Dorado and Argyllshire
During the night of 31st May-1st June there was a recrudescence of enemy
E-boat activity. After the torpedoing of the destroyers Grafton and Wakeful
off Nieuport in the early hours of the 29th May M.T.B. patrols had been estab-
lished during the dark hours to prevent enemy E-boats from using the inshore
channels.
It was, however, in the less confined waters along Route Y that the enemy
obtained their successes, despite intensive air and surface patrols. Route Y
was patrolled that night by 2 corvettes and 6 trawlers, while Coastal Command
provided 6 aircraft with bombs and parachute flares; and owing to magnetic
mines ships evacuating troops were given permission in the early hours of 1st
June to use that route as well as Route X.
At 0230 on the 1st June the A/S trawler Stella Dorado, which 24 hours earlier
had picked up 55 survivors from the Siroco, torpedoed by an E-boat near
T buoy, was herself torpedoed in the same position and sunk whilst on patrol.
About a quarter of an hour later the A/S trawler Argyllshire, on patrol in
company with the Lord Melchett and Stella Rigel about 2 miles east of S buoy,
commenced an attack on what appeared to be a submarine. Within 5 minutes
she was struck by a torpedo fired by an E-Boat and sank immediately. Five
survivors, including her Captain, Sub-Lieutenant J. S. Weddle, R.N.R., S.O.
11th A/S Striking Force, were picked up by the trawler Malabar.
At the time there were many trawlers and other small craft in the neighbour-
hood, and one of the two E-Boats responsible for these sinkings was reported
to have been disguised as a sailing boat.
Final evacuation postponed
Already on the afternoon of the 31st May ships in Dunkirk road had come
under fire from guns on shore at Mardyck, and early on 1st June it became
evident that Major General Alexander's force could not be evacuated com-
pletely on the night of 1st/2nd June. At 0800, therefore, he agreed on a modi-
fied plan with Admiral Abrial and General Fagalde which involved holding his
present line till midnight 1st/2nd June, so as to cover Dunkirk and to enable
the French to evacuate as many of their troops as possible. Subsequently
Major General Alexander was to withdraw to a bridgehead round Dunkirk with
all available A/A and anti-tank guns and such troops as had not yet embarked.
Embarkations over Bray beaches
It was not only in Dunkirk roads that the ships had been under fire on the
previous day; off Bray they had the same experience. Troops were moving
westward, and embarkation at La Panne was no longer possible. It was clear
to Rear-Admiral Wake-Walker that beach work at Bray would be costly, and
he so informed Vice-Admiral, Dover (0235/1), who concurred, whilst pointing
out the necessity of using the beaches up to the last possible moment.

SUBJECT
Report Covering Patrol from the South Falls Buoy
to the West Hinder - May 29th to June 3rd inclusive.
H.M. Trawlers "STELLA RIGEL" and "LORD MELCHETT".
Both ships did extraordinarily well, there being
practically no sleep for anybody on board for over four
days.
I have pleasure in bringing to your notice bearing
and general behaviour of:-
Skipper R.C. Taylor, R.N.R., "LORD MELCHETT"
Skipper L.P. Keable, R.N.R., "STELLA RIGEL",
upon whose conduct throughout, their Unit Officers informed
me, they were unable to give them sufficient praise.
Neither Lieutenant W.H. Ward, R.N.V.R. nor
Sub. -Lieutenant J.W. Wykeham, R.N.V.R. had previously seen
anything of war, and Sub. -Lieutenant Wykeham came back as
if he had been to a football match.

0615 sighted wreck 2 miles west of T. Buoy. Sent boat away to
investigate. Picked up some of H.M.S. "Gracie Fields" papers
and 3 soldiers' kitbags. No survivors.
Resumed patrol.
31st May, 1940.
Patrol between S. Falls and West Hinden.
1st June, 1940.
Patrol S. Buoy to W. Hinden.
0245 "Argyleshire" sunk by torpedo 1/2 mile East of S. Buoy.
"Stella Rigel" picked up 5 survivors.
Joined by "Cape Argona" resumed patrol.
2nd June, 1940.
Patrol to W. Hinden.
1055 Aircraft attack, heavily bombed and machine gunned.
1130 Again attacked. No damage. "Cape Argona" damaged.
1530 "Blackburn Rovers" and "Westella" sunk by torpedo.
Resumed patrol.
3rd June, 1940.
Patrol to N. Goodwin.
0320 Received message return to Base with "Stella Rigel".
Berthed 1210.
I should like to record that the general behaviour of
Skipper Taylor and the whole of the ships company was at all times
magnificent under most trying conditions.

Report on patrol of May 29th to June 3rd.
At 1515 on May 29th we cast off and proceeded out of harbour,
icking up H.M.T. "Argyleshire" and "Lord Melchett" outside. We
rrived off the position at 2200 and proceeded to our patrol area east
f S. Buoy. At 0030 on May 30th we observed a vessel stopped which got
nder way as we approached. As she did not answer the challenge we
ave chase and eventually stopped her. She proved to be M.S. "Ricas"
rom Ostend with troops.
At 0750 we picked up "Argyleshire" and returned to area of
Walls Buoy for patrol.
At 2100 on 31st May we received orders from "Argyleshire" to
atrol S. Buoy to West Hinder during night.
At 0230, having lost touch with "Argyleshire", and having
efound her, we were closing when she was struck by a torpedo and sank
mmediately. We lowered the boat and recovered five survivors, the two
fficers, the signalman, wireless operator and one Able Seaman. During
he course of the rescue a plane circled overhead and dropped parachute
lares, but took no action. The Captain reported having seen a
ubmarine crash dive, and while manoeuvring to attack he was struck
midships by a torpedo. We received instructions to land survivors at
earest port and proceeded towards Ramsgate. Artificial respiration
las carried out on A.B. Laycock for 3 hours until we transferred all
urvivors to H.M. Drifter "Gerrars Rontoul" outside Ramsgate to be taken
.nto port. Picked up "Lord Melchett" and patrolled area of S. Falls
Buoy during daylight of June 1st.
3. Buoy to West Hinden.
At 2015 received orders from "Lord Melchett" to patrol from

Whilst heading from .Buoy towards Dunkirk in answer

observed being waved. Fire ceased and boats were lowered.
We went alongside M.T.B. took survivors and casualties off.
Report of action has been given to F.O.I.C. Harwich also
with report for Commanding Officer of M.T.B. Casualties
1 killed and five wounded. Transferred all to H.M.S.
"Saltash" who also took charge of M.T.B.

Received instructions to take charge of Group consisting
of "Sphene" and"Lord Melchett" and patrol between S.Buoy
and West Hinder.
2. 0509. Contacted "Lord Melchett" she joined us, proceeded
Eastward.
0711.
Stopped and Picked up 12 Refugees from small boat, boat
not worth keeping so cast it adrift and proceeded.
0729.
Signalled by aircraft (Hudson) piloted by Pilot Officer
Elworthy of Detling and asked to follow him. He
repeatedly circled around us and eventually said carry on
as you are going and you'll meet and open boat full of
people.
0740.
Met small boat, took refugees onboard, made boat fast
astern and proceeded on patrol.
0955.
Attacked by enemy dive bombers first one dived and
machine gunned us, the second one dropped bombs, both
rame out of sun, could be heard distinctly but not seen
until almost on us. They dived to within a hundred feet,
continual fire was maintained until ammunition exhausted,
ship zig-zagged continuously. 15 bombs were dropped
altogether during the course of three attacks. Bombs
fell within 20 feet of ship both sides and one thought
to be incendiary fell in bulwarks forward, setting fire
of mast away bar one arm supported, port bulwarks and but D.G.
to two spare unprimed D/Cs and deck and also blew base
gear carried on again, believed considerable damage minor
dismantled. Engines were stopped by explosion done to
engine and ship badly strained, besides numerous
defects. Fire was put out by deck hose.
