REPORT ON OPERATION DYNAMO AS PER ADMIRALTY
SIGNAL 1652/6 to C-IN-C. W.A.
On the 30.5.40, whilst minesweeping between Dover Harbour
and the S.Good-win L/V., I received orders to proceed to
Dunkirk operations. to arrive there at daylight on 31.5.40, for sweeping
I left Dover in the "L.L" trawler "LORD INCHCAPE" at
1750/30 in company with the "L.L" trawler "OUR BAIRNS"

Both vessels anchored at the N. Goodwin L/V until
2345/30 and then weighed and proceeded.
At 0500/31 I closed H.M.S. "EXPRESS" in Dunkirk roads
to ascertain where I should find the S.N.O. at Dunkirk.
I received orders to enter the port and at 0600 both vessels
were moored alongside the Eastern Mole inside the harbour,
where I reported to the S.N.O. at the Naval Base at the end
of the Mole.
I then received orders to lie where we were as sweeping at
the moment was impossible owing to traffic in the roads, but to
be ready to proceed when required.

217 troops. This vessel is only 70' long. All ships returned
safely with troops.

beat; "Imverforth" doing the same and 10 survivors were picked
up.
Course was then shaped to pass through Calata Channel
and owing to the poor visibility this was done without gunfire
being opened on us from shore.
Meanwhile anti-aircraft fire was going on against our
planes almost continuously from Calais.
Knowing the operation to be no longer possible owing
to enemy occupation of the shore line I shaped a course for
returning to harbour.
I regret to report that eight of "Thomas Bartlett's"
crew were lost.

REPORT ON OPERATION DYNAMO AS PER ADMIRALTY
SIGNAL 1652/6 to C-IN-C. W.A.
On the 30.5.40, whilst minesweeping between Dover Harbour
and the S.Good-win L/V., I received orders to proceed to
Dunkirk to arrive there at daylight on 31.5.40, for sweeping
operations.
I left Dover in the "L.L" trawler "LORD INCHCAPE" at
1750/30 in company with the "L.L." trawler "OUR BAIRNS"
ormang the Unit.
Both vessels anchored at the N.Goodwin L/V until
2345/30 and then weighed and proceeded.
At 0500/31 I closed H.M.S. "EXPRESS" in Dunkirk roads
to ascertain where I should find the S.N.O. at Dunkirk.
I received orders to enter the port and at 0600 both vessels
were moored alongside the Eastern Mole inside the harbour,
where I reported to the S.N.O. at the Naval Base at the end
of the Mole.
I then received orders to lie where we were as sweeping at
the moment was impossible owing to traffic in the roads, but to
be ready to proceed when required.
Orders were later received from the Naval Embarkation
Officer that the "LORD INCHCAPE" would be required to evacuate
the Naval Staff and personnel from Dynkirk when the troop
evacuation was completed, and that the vessel was to stand by

the meantime, however, orders from another source had been
received by the Skipper to embark troops.

The object of the expedition was the possible evacuation
Commander M/S (Commander W.V.H. Harris R.N.) sailed in
"Grey Mist" in charge of forces employed.
The orders to form the expedition were received at 1900,
and vessels sailed at 2130, the first five trawlers to leave,
towing motor boats.
Vessels were ordered to rendezvous at No. 3 Buoy Calais
Roads, and await instructions from Commander M/S. Destroyer
force was in support.
On receipt of signal which had been wrongly decoded, two
motor boats were ordered into Calais Harbour. These boats had
left for the harbour when a further signal was received that
Calais was to be held at all costs, and the signal was ordered to
be sent by hand to the Brigadier Commanding Forces. "Conidaw"
was ordered to proceed immediately and deliver the message.
A further signal was then received recalling all forces
to the Downs. On receipt of this signal "Botanic" and "Maretta"
were ordered to remain until boats and "Conidaw" returned, and
Destroyer escort was asked to be provided. All other vessels
returned to the Downs.
Reports from Lieutenant Commander P.F. Cammiade R.N.V.R.,
Sub. Lieutenant M.R. Mills R.N.V.R., and Skipper R. Smelgrove,are
attached (la, lb, lc, ld).
There was constant enemy air activity during the night,
and a considerable amount of firing ashore.

29th May. "Lord Grey" and "Clythness" to Dunkirk.
Report of Lieutenant J. Simson R.N.V.R. attached (No.
30th May. "Sargasso", "Gulzar", "Conidaw", "Chico",

217 troops. This vessel is only 70' long. All ships returned
safely with troops.

the operation carried out by "LL" Trawlers this morning (28th on

May, 1940) under my command.
"Thomas Bartlett" and "Our Bairns" to carry out operations laid
In accordance with your signal ordering "Inverforth",
down for Monday, I left harbour with these ships and proceeded
on the route indicated.
Knowing from experience of the previous day that to
approach Calais No. 6 Buoy would bring us under enemy gunfire I
decided to approach the coast more from the Northward, and to
Buoy. the Eastward of Calais and shaped a course for this from No. 8
Visibility was becoming less and on sighting again the
Channel. coast line I turned to the Eastward for approaching Dunkirk
When approaching in this direction enemy gunfire was
opened upon us from shore with what was probably 12 pounders or
the equivalent and soon their shooting became accurate.
All ships turned to the Northward until out of sight
Channel. of land, none being hit, and we proceeded again towards Dunkirk
At 1017 came a loud explosion and "Thomas Bartlett"
was seen to have been blown up, settling rapidly by the stern,
and sinking in less then 1½ minutes. The position was close
East and North of Dunkirk A.W. Buoy.
"Our Bairns" immediately closed her and lowered her

and owing to the poor visibility this was done without gunfire
Meanwhile anti-aircraft fire was going on against our
planes almost continuously from Calais.
Knowing the operation to be no longer possible owing
to enemy occupation of the shore line I shaped a course for
returning to harbour.
I regret to report that eight of "Thomas Bartlett's"
crew were lost.
