7 records

7 potential matching records have been identified.

These records may contain vessel particulars, reported movements, participation assessments, named personnel and source references. A match does not by itself prove that the vessel participated in Operation Dynamo.

“Potential match” means a candidate returned by one or more indexing rules; it is not necessarily an exact identity match. Depending on the source, matching may use a normalised vessel name, a partial text or OCR hit, an alias, or related metadata. Roman-numeral suffixes such as I, II, III, IV and V may be absent, misread or separated from the base name, so records for similarly named vessels can be grouped incorrectly. Multi-word names can also produce candidates where only one significant word matches. Confirm the full name, numeral, vessel type, dimensions, builder, ownership, dates and source context before treating two records as the same vessel.

We are compiling and checking transcriptions, metadata, vessel-name matches, source references and reuse permissions before publishing further detail. This work helps prevent incomplete OCR, historic spelling variations or unverified associations from being presented as established fact.

Account registrations and access to these developing records are temporarily unavailable. Existing account holders may log in, and everyone can join the newsletter for publication updates.

1 mile east of Dunkirk pier, Royalty
being towed at full speed, slipped the

Malo beach.
Air attack. Nine bombs fell in a line
along the starboard side of dr.
Keith, which was outside Cervia.
Cervia got under way to avoid the
turning and twisting destroyer.
Picked up crew and boat of Royalty
and also of S/B Duchess.
0800ca
Keith began to list, and was again
bombed; her guns were going all the
time as she steamed round and round.
She then stopped and let go her
anchor. As the crew began to abandon
ship, the bombers machine gunned them.
The tug Vincia began to pick up
survivors, and the tug St. Abbs got
alongside Keith's starboard bow. A
sloop(1) also went to her assistance.
Cervia turned round and picked up
soldiers from a M/B.
0815ca
At this time, the dr. Ivanhoe, to the
westward, was seen to be disabled,
and a "small tanker" [the M/S
Skipjack] astern of Vincia, went up
in flames.
-
Cervia then took the sailing barge
Tollesbury, which had 200 troops under
hatches, in tow. The M.L.B. Orient IV
was added to the tow, and Cervia
proceeded down Dunkirk roads. When
west of the pierhead, Ivanhoe was

Ran on a submerged wreck, about 2 miles
south of the N. Goodwin L.V., and took

The tug Java came to her assistance,
and decided to remove Jacinta's troops
before attempting to refloat her.
This was accomplished with the assis-
tance of Nelson's M/B which had left
Ramsgate at 1645 en route for Dunkirk.
1800ca
The M/L Fervent (Lt. Cdr. W.R.T.
Clements, R.N.R.) returning from the
Dunkirk area found the Jacinta in
the Downs, drifting with the tide and
deserted, but apparently seaworthy.
Lt. Cdr. Clements allowed her to
drift to a safe anchorage, and then
anchored her.

From:- Lt. D. Van Gessel, R.N.V.R.
Date:- 5th June, 1940.
To:- Naval Officer in Charge, Ramsgate.
1st June. Was told to go to assistance of "Ivanhoe" and
"Queen of Thanet". We contacted with tug
?
"Java" who had survivors on board from the
"Queen of Thanet". We set out and found
"Ivanhoe" seriously bombed. The captain asked
us to get medical help, etc. etc., which we
did.
We helped with more serious wounded, but they
were in such a condition that removal seemed
unwise. In consultation with Captain of
"Ivanhoe" we decided to take off the survivors
(mostly soldiers) and took them ashore.
On next journey we took into Margate an M.T.B.
with one survivor out of 8. The boat was
badly damaged, but was docked alongside Pier.
On these journeys was accompanied by Lt. Dancy.
31st May. Was out in tug "Doria" trying to find lifeboats
reported floating near the Goodwins, when off
Deal an M.T.B. bound for Convoy duties caught
fire. After helping crew we took S.0.7 into
Dover submarine basin. Commander of S.0.7
is reporting matter.
N.B. Survivors of "Ivanhoe" were landed at
Margate. We only left "Ivanhoe" when nothing
more could be done and she proceeded in tow
to Chatham.

NARRATIVE OF DUTCH BOAT "JAVA"
26th May - 4th June, 1940.
0645, 27th May, the crew of D.B.22 under the command of
Lieut-Commander Drake, RND left Chatham Barracks and travelled via
Portsmouth to Southampton, joining "Java" that evening. The
vessel was then under repair, with orders on completion to load
ammunition in the River.
On the afternoon of 29th May those orders were cancelled
and we were instructed to fuel and proceed light to Dover.
Accordingly about 1700 with Main and Auxilliary machinery
persuaded to function by Diesel experts from the shore "Java" left
dock and proceeded down the Solent to Hamble.
At 0400 on 30th May our troubles started. Our final air
pressure started the Main Engine and we left with the handicap of
being able neither to stop or go astern as the belt driving our
Auxilliarys parted immediately. Eventually our Auxilliary
Diesel was started and ran all day for light and air with the
result that shortly before arrival at Dover our E.R.A. collapsed
owing to fumes. As our Windlass gear was already out of action
the ship was allowed alongside and on the morning of 31st May
"Sandhurst" was notified of our defects. By this time our
Auxilliary engine also had ceased running.
The Main belt was renewed, but as regards the other and
major defects, notably our Ballast Pump, it was pointed out that
as they would take several hours to complete and we were under
1 hours' notice for sea, it was not worth starting on them.
On Saturday morning, 1st June Lieut-Commander Drake was
taken ill and detained sick in "Sandhurst".
I received orders that afternoon to proceed to Dunkirk to
arrive at 0200 on 2nd June and left at 1945, steaming 10 knots
with neither Auxilliary nor Anchor gear working. My confidence
in our new belt was apparently misplaced as being too slack it
failed to drive the Compressor. This lack of air and consequent
inability, if stopped, to restart, either ahead or astern, might
have led to complications if, at midnight, 16 miles off Dunkirk,
No.3 Cylinder had not commenced to seize, shedding bolts from
the Crankcase which my Engineroom staff eventually held in place
with wedges. But our speed was down to 5 knots making an 0200
arrival impossible and I had no choice but to put about, but a
for
minuteslater however presumably with the Engine cooling, some
higher revolutions were obtained, and I rmoceeded another 5 miles
towards the shore. Again however the Engine failed and it was
only at slow speed and with great care that it could be kept
moving at all. Considering further progress unwise I cruised
in the neighbourhood until daylight and then made the best of my
way home, berthing in Dover about 1015, 2nd June. Here repairs
were considered impossible and on Tuesday, 4th June I was towed
by "Gorecht" to Sheerness and on the following day by "Bornrif"
to Tilbury, thence the following morning to Surrey Commercial Docks

On the morning of 27th.May I proceeded from Chatham to Portsmouth

3 informed that "TINY" had already been taken over by the C.O. and ships
mpany of "JAVA" which had broken down and was then undergoing repair,
1 I was instructed to proceed to Southampton and take command of the
tter ship;this I accordingly did on the evening of the same day.
Repair work proceeded as arranged in accordance with F.O.1/c.
uthampton's instructions and main engine trials were held during the
renoon of 29th. May; these appeared to be satisfactory.
ring the afternoon of the same day I received instructions to proceed
Dover at the earliest possible moment, the urgency of these instructions
king it impossible to carry out the full tests of auxiliary machinery
originally planned with a further 24 hours at my disposal.
I left Inner Dock, Southampton at approx.1840/29th.and,after
justment of compasses and fuelling at Hamble Jetty, finally sailed for
ver at 0400/30th. arriving off that port at 1730 on the same day.
On passage the following defects had appeared:-
Driving belt from main engines to auxiliary machinery broken.
Auxiliary diesel refused to start.
Leaks from air bottles had resulted in starting air supply being
reduced to only sufficient air for one certain restart.
Mooring and windlass diesel refused to statt.
Ballast pump out of order.
On arrival off Dover a report was made through the Examination
essel to the effect that engineroom repairs were required and I was later
nstructed to berth alongside in Submarine Basin. This was done at
approx. 2230/30th.
Repair work was started the following day but at 2000 was stopped
is all ships were at immediate notice and remaining repairs would require
at least 24 hours. At that time the only repairs which had been completed
were the renewal of the driving belt and the restarting of the auxiliary

Operation Dynamo". It was, however, severely restricted by the almost of
the wish, already noticed, to prevent early information of the operation be- of
coming known to the enemy; and an urgent and persistent cry for boats arose
from the ships off the beaches.³
Beach craft are sailed for Dunkirk
Steps had already been taken, however, to begin the provision of small boats.
At 0800 on the 28th May, 8 motor boats were sailed from the Thames for the
South Downs. At noon the tug Sun V with 8 cutters and 2 whalers in tow,
and the tug St. Clears with 11 cutters in tow, left Sheerness for Ramsgate, and
both tugs sailed for Dunkirk late in the evening. Of these two tows, however,
only 7 cutters reached the beaches, the remainder being lost en route.4
At 1500 the tug Java left Ramsgate for Dunkirk, in company with four
drifters⁵ and 5 motor launches⁶. They arrived off Bray at 0100 on 29th May,
and were the first arrivals of small motor craft off the beaches. With them,
at 1500 on the 28th May, 5 drifters of the 1st Mine Recovery Flotilla left Rams-
gate for Dunkirk⁷, and at 1845, 18 motor boats with 17 whalers left Sheerness
for Dover.⁸
Supply of small craft is accelerated
These supplied only a portion of what was required. There was still a lack

power boat should be sent to the beaches⁹. The Admiralty's vigorous reaction
to this request became fully evident on the following day, the 29th May, when
the Portsmouth and Nore Commands, the Thames estuary and the Port of
London Authority were combed for motor boats, lighters and barges¹⁰. To
accelerate the journey arrangements were made to route them direct to the
beaches, provided they had charts, food, fuel etc.¹¹, though some difficulty was
experienced in providing the large number of charts required. Indeed, on the

high level bombing attack was made on the destroyer Greyhound, on the mine- a

The Sutton was straddled but no damage was done. In the dive-bomb attack
which followed, however, the Greyhound was severely damaged by 2 near
misses, and had 90 casualties, 20 of which were fatal. The Sp. S/V
Royal Eagle, which was assisting in rescue work, escaped damage, but the
trawler Nautilus, which had already ferried some 600 troops from the beach,
was straddled by bombs and had her engines and steering gear put out of action.
Making water rapidly, she managed to get alongside the Greyhound and transfer
to her the 150 troops she was carrying. The Nautilus, already 6 feet down in
the water and sinking, was then abandoned and set on fire.
The Greyhound limped back to Dover carrying 506 troops, but for 4 hours
of the passage she was in tow of the Polish destroyer Blyskawica which had
been on patrol with the destroyer Vega in the vicinity of the West Hinder buoy.
The Greyhound took no further part in "Dynamo."

Calcutta contacts Lord Gort
On receipt of this signal at 0345 the Calcutta, which had already been embark-
ing troops from La Panne beach, sent her boats in again, in charge of Mr. F.J.
March, Gunner. Mr. March made personal contact with Lord Gort about
8 miles inland, and placed the Calcutta at his disposal for his or his staff's evacua-
tion. Lord Gort, however, courteously refused to be evacuated at this
stage¹.
La Panne beach cleared of troops
Meanwhile the Calcutta was proceeding with the embarkation, having en-
listed the assistance of the minesweepers Sutton and Salamander, the tug Java,
five drifters2, and three motor launches³. By 1357 the Calcutta had embarked
1200 troops, with whom she proceeded to Sheerness.
In addition to the ships assisting the Calcutta, 7 minesweepers4, 4 skoots5,
and 5 destroyers⁶ also embarked troops from La Panne beach. Of the
destroyers, the Greyhound was bombed and severely damaged (see p.42).
The minesweepers embarked, in all, 3415 troops, the skoots 1137 and the des-
troyers 2100. The tramp Yewdale and the motor vessels Beal and Bullfinch
between them brought off 1,854. The assault landing craft A.L.C.15 ferried
about 750 troops from the beaches to off-lying ships, and finally transported
25 to Dover ; the A.L.C.5 also ferried troops throughout the day.
The paddle-minesweeper Oriole had beached herself at La Panne at about
0600, thus permitting about 2,500 troops to pass over her decks to be embarked
by other ships before she refloated at about 1800. In this connection, Sub-
Lieut. Croswell, who had been landed at La Panne at about 0600 with a small
beach party in the Harvester's motor skiff, says : " On the beach we found
14 boats which we launched. A line ferry was established from a paddle-
steamer [the Oriole] which was aground close inshore, and this steamer served
as a pier alongside which other boats were able to come.
Throughout
the
day embarkation continued."
Later in his report, Sub-Lieut. Croswell says " About 1400
bombing
commenced - there were no casualties though 8 heavy bombs fell within 100
yards of the place of embarkation. A supply ship [the danlayer Nautilus]
to the right of the beach was fired and destroyed by a near miss, and a destroyer
[the Greyhound] was hit by an incendiary bomb [in fact she was severely
damaged by a near miss] but continued in action. I joined up with the Army
Staff controlling evacuation - there were no other naval officers at La Panne.⁷
About 2300
I requested that piers should be built but was told nothing
could be done that night.
Lord Gort arrived on the beach on Thursday
morning [30th May] and asked what could be done to assist. I again sug-
gested erection of piers, and under Colonel Porter's direction this was begun,
the pier at La Panne being ready and in use by 1400".
I Calcutta's report.
2 The Golden Sunbeam, Lord Rodney, Lord Keith, Lord St. Vincent, and Lord Collingwood.
3 The Angler II, Nayland and New Britannic.
4 The Emperor of India, Gracie Fields, Halcyon, Hebe, Oriole, Princess Elizabeth and
Waverley.
5 The Reiger, Doggersbank, Jutland and Oranje.
6 The Shikari, Harvester, Anthony, Sabre and Greyhound.
7 Sub. Lt. Croswell was not given orders by his commanding officer to remain ashore.
He says as at La Panne there was no liaison between Army and Navy, I realised I could
do a much more useful job by remaining there," and he stayed there until 1st June. Com-
menting on this, Lt. Cdr. M. Thornton, R.N., Captain of the Harvester says: " This young
officer wisely accepted responsibility of missing his ship and then took charge of the beaches
and embarkation.

HMS keith
Steam and smoke were coming away from the Destroyer, and she
n to take a list. I began to run towards her, as also did the Tug
ABBS", but the planes were bombing her again, intent on finishing
off, so we had to sheer away from her. Her guns were going all
time as she steamed round and round, but she stopped as she must
re been hit again. She let go her anchor and swing round to head
the tide, as the crew began to take to the boats and rafts we made
r her again. As the bombers came over and machine-gunned the crew
3 they were all jumping overboard and the Tug "VINCIA", which was
oming in the Bast end of the Roads began to pick them up, and the
'ST. ABBS" had got alongside her starboard bow and the sloop was also
going to their assistance, so I turned rouried to a motor boat full of
soldiers and picked them up.
lvanhoe
At this time I could see that another Destroyer had been dis-
abled to the West of the Harbour, and a 'plane had just dropped a bomb
on a small oil tanker astern of the "VINCIA" which went up in flames.
A direct hit on the stern of the sinking Destroyer blew up her depth
charges and we made to the sailing barge #TOLLESBURY" which was sig-
nalling us. We went alongside of her and were requested to tow her
out of it as she had over two hundred soldiers under her main hatch.
We passed the motore lifeboat "ORIENT IV" on to her stern and began to
tow her down the Dunkirk Roads.
A Cross-Channel boat was backing out of the Harbour full of
troops, and no more troops were to be seen on the Pierhead, when,
West of the Pierhead we saw that the "PERSIA" had the other disabled
Destroyer in tow and he was blowing for us. But we could not catch
him as the Destroyer had one engine going as well.
The "VINCIA" by this time, was passing us with her decks
laden with survivors of the sunken Destroyer, and as we all came to
No. 5 W. Buoy to turn out to sea, here the gun fire from shore batteries
and Destroyers and trawlers was terrific as about 20 planes flew towards
us to try and stop us getting away. The "PERSIA's" Destroyer put up a
smoke screen, and we watched nine bombs fall from a plane and drop
right alongside a Cross-channel boat that was bound in, but she kept
going. Then a plane over us released five bombs and we watched them
fall and they dropped in to the sea about 100 feet on our port bow,
lifting the Tug bodily out of the water. Another bomb was aimed at
the "PERSIA" which missed and must have put water on her deck, and yet
another was aimed at the "VINCIA" which also missed. The Lewis gun
on our barge was going all the time with ours.
A squadron of our planes was coming over and the Enemy 'planes
began to turn away. A bomb exploded between a Sloop towing a disabled
Destroyer, and I think it must have parted the towrope as I could see
they were trying to get connected again soon afterwards. The "PERSIA"
and Destroyer began to draw away from us, also the "VINCIA", and we
continued on our tow.
A mine was exploded near us by a navy motor boat and when we
arrived in the Downs we were met by the examination Tug "JAVA" about
3-0 p.m. and were ordered to Ramsgate. "e hove barge up alongside and
anchored at Quern Buoy 4-45 p.m. where a motor boat launch came off
and took ashore about 100 troops and returned for the others, with orders
for us to tow barge to Gravesend.
In all, we brought about 230 troops out of Dunkirk, the Barge
"TOLLESBURY" and crew, and crew of "DUCHESS" and crew and Soldier steve-
dores of "ROYALTY" and Motor boat "ORIENT IV". We andored at Southend
10-0 p.m. and proceeded to Gravesend at 7-0 a.m. on Sunday 2nd June,
arriving at Lobster Buoy with "TOLLESBURY" 9-30 a.m. Went to Pier and
handed "ORIENT IV" over to Custom House,

But our speed was down to 5 knots making an 0200
arrival impossible and I had no choice but to put about, but a
for
minuteslater however presumably with the Engine cooling, some
higher revolutions were obtained, and I receeded another 5 miles
towards the shore.

:h draft, to take over Dutch ship "TINY". On arrival at Portsmouth I
3 informed that "TINY" had already been taken over by the C.O. and ships
mpany of "JAVA" which had broken down and was then undergoing repair,
1 I was instructed to proceed to Southampton and take command of the
tter ship;this I accordingly did on the evening of the same day.
This was done at
approx. 2230/30th.
Repair work was started the following day but at 2000 was stopped

were the renewal of the driving belt and the restarting of the auxiliary
