Flare burning drifters - Continued
The following 1s a summary of the report of proceedings
of the F/B drifters furnished by Captai n A/P Dover:
26th May
Eileen Emma and Netsukis returned to
Dover from Dunkirk. The Gervais
Rentoul remained in Dunkirk.
Shipmates, Girl Pamela, Lord Howe and
Young Mun returned to harbour from
minefield patrols.
27th May
p.m.
17 F/B drifters sailed for Dunkirk from
Dover, 1.e. all except the Gervais
Rentoul and The Boys.

On approaching the outer channel at
Dunkirk, enemy A/C dropped 16 bombs.
As the result of near misses, Boy Roy
(Skipper E.F. Dettman, R.N.R.)
commenced to sink and was beached in
Dunkirk harbour, (1) Paxton (Lt. Cdr.
R.M. Prior R.N. and Skipper A.M.
Lovis R.N.R.) started a severe leak
and was scuttled alongside the quay.(2)

During the night the drifters evacuated
about 2000 troops from the beach 3
miles east of Dunkirk, using ship's
dinghies.

possible.
19. As regards enemy activity, this day the Germans
contented themselves with bombing the town and port of Dunkirk,
but on a small scale compared with that to be experienced later,
probably because of increasing R.A.F. air cover and also due to
the fact that a heavy pall of smoke from the burning town
covered the operation most of the day.
20. Losses to H.M. Ships - 28th May.
A/S Trawler THURINGIA sunk by mine in position 51° 20' N,
2° 03' E. Four survivors.
Flare-burning Drifters PAXTON and BOY ROY damaged by enemy
aircraft and beached. No casualties.
Destroyer WINDSOR. Bombed about 1100. Damage to hull and
aerials. Various casualties.
Minesweeper BRIGHTON BELLE. Sunk in collision. struck
LL Trawler THOMAS BARTLETT sunk by mine in shallow water
whilst trying to avoid gunfire in position 51 2 12 N, 54 E.
Personnel Vessel QUEEN OF THE CHANNEL sunk by bombing attack.
Wednesday, 29th May.
21. The Northern Route Y having been swept, it was
arranged to sail personnel ships to Dunkirk at daylight and to
continue to sail throughout the day; this route would take
ships clear of the artillery fire on shore. Personnel ships
accordingly started at 0230.
22.
Much consideration had been given to the practicability
of building piers on the beaches using lines of berges. Reports
from ships that worked off the beaches showed, however, that
owing to the very gradual shoaling of the water at all states
of the tide such a barge pier, to be effective, would have to
be of very great length, beyond the resources available.
23. Information was received that the Personnel Vessels
with their Mercantile Marine crews were having difficulty in
making the entrance to Dunkirk harbour in the face of the
navigational difficulties caused by a heavy smoke pall over
the entrance and in face of bombing and shelling encountered
en route and whilst alongside. [In certain vessels the crews
were unwilling to sail when ordered, consequently application
was made to the Commander-in-Chief, Nore, for Naval Officers
and ratings for duty in the Personnel Ships.) Nevertheless, it
subsequently transpired that at Dunkirk there had been a good
number of ships throughout the night, at times exceeding the
influx of troops.
24. S.N.O., Dunkirk, and other Senior Officers on the
Coast reported during the early hours that surf on the beaches
was retarding boat work. S.N.O., Dunkirk, at 0709, asked for
all ships to go to Dunkirk. The Vice Admiral could not accept
this as it was essential to maintain lifts off the beaches as
well/

Enquiry into loss of H.M. Drifter
"Paxton" in Operation "Dynamo".
With reference to Admiralty Letter N.L. 6245/40
dated 1st August, 1940, be pleased to lay before Their
Lordships the following report resulting from an Enquiry
into the circumstances attending the loss of H.M. Drifter
"Paxton" on 28th May, 1940.
2.-
Temporary Skipper A. M. Lovis, R.N.R. the surviving
officer who was in command of "Paxton" was examined on
27th August, 1940.
3.-
At about 1630 a near miss from a bomber diving low
blew a hole in the ship's port side.
She made water
instantly but as engines were still working she proceeded,
sinking steadily, to a position in the harbour clear of the
fairway where in about 20 minutes she settled down and was
abandoned with gunwale awash in shallow water.
4.-
All S.P's and charts had previously been thrown
overboard in a weighted bag and in deep water.
5.-
In the circumstances in which this vessel was lost
no useful information as to the behaviour of material was
obtained.
6.-

19. As regards enemy activity, this day the Germans
contented themselves with bombing the town and port of Dunkirk,
but on a small scale compared with that to be experienced later,
the fact that a heavy pall of smoke from the burning town
probably because of incroasing R.A.F. air cover and also due to
covered the operation most of the day.
20. Losses to H.M. Ships - 28th May.
A/S Trawler THURINGIA sunk by mine in position 51° 20' N,
2° 03' E. Four survivors.
Flare-burning Drifters PAXTON and BOY ROY damaged by enemy
aircraft and beached. No casualties.
Destroyer WINDSOR. Bombed about 1100. Damage to hull and
aerials. Various casualties.
Minesweeper BRIGHTON BELLE. Sunk in collision.
LL Trawler THOMAS BARTLETT sunk by mine in shallow water
whilst trying to avoid gunfire in position 51 2 12 N, 54 E.
Personnel Vessel QUEEN OF THE CHANNEL sunk by bombing attack.
Wednesday, 29th May.
21. The Northern Route Y having been swept, it was
arranged to sail personnel ships to Dunkirk at daylight and to
continue to sail throughout the day; this route would take
ships clear of the artillery fire on shore. Personnel ships
accordingly started at 0230.
22. Much consideration had been given to the practicability
of building piers on the beaches using lines of berges. Reports
from ships that worked off the beaches showed, however, that
owing to the very gradual shoaling of the water at all states
of the tide such a barge pier, to be effective, would have to
be of very great length, beyond the resources available.
23. Information was received that the Personnel Vessels
with their Mercantile Marine crews were having difficulty in
making the entrance to Dunkirk harbour in the face of the
navigational difficulties caused by a heavy smoke pall over
the entrance and in face of bombing and shelling encountered
en route and whilst alongside. In certain vessels the crews
were unwilling to sail when ordered, consequently application
was made to the Commander-in-Chief, Nore, for Naval Officers
and ratings for duty in the Personnel Ships. Nevertheless, it
subsequently transpired that at Dunkirk there had been a good
number of ships throughout the night, at times exceeding the
influx of troops.
24. S.N.O., Dunkirk, and other Senior Officers on the
Coast reported during the early hours that surf on the beaches
was retarding boat work. S.N.O., Dunkirk, at 0709, asked for
all ships to go to Dunkirk. The Vice Admiral could not accept
this as it was essential to maintain lifts off the beaches as
well/

MONDAY, 27TH MAY

meantime at 2025, the Vice-Admiral, Dover, received another signal sent only
a few minutes later :
" Port continuously bombed all day and on fire. Embarkation possible only
from beaches east of harbour A.B.C.D.¹ Send all ships and passenger ships
there to anchor. Am ordering Wolfhound to load there and sail. T.O.O.2005."
To the Vice-Admiral, Dover, the situation must have appeared critical
when, later that evening, he received a report from two military officers from
G.H.Q., that the plight of the B.E.F. was precarious and that the enemy might,
indeed, succeed in cutting it off from Dunkirk.²
All ships diverted to the beaches
Such was the grim picture presenting itself to the Vice-Admiral, Dover, that
night - the B.E.F. in grave and very real danger of being cut off altogether from
Dunkirk, and possibly only a bare 24 hours available for its evacuation. Admiral
Ramsay reacted to these dire tidings with characteristic drive and energy,
and a period of intense activity ensued. Every effort was concentrated on
sending as many craft as possible to the beaches without delay². Order
followed order in rapid succession. Personnel ships were diverted to the
beach, code letters A, B, C and D (i.e. Malo beach). Four paddle minesweepers³
were sailed from the Downs to La Panne beach. Destroyers were rushed to the
beaches and urged to embark as many British troops as possible, as this was
the last chance of saving them "; the Gallant, and Vivacious, then on patrol,
the Windsor, Vimy, Anthony, Impulsive, Sabre and the cruiser Calcutta, were
all ordered to proceed with the utmost despatch to the beach at Malo-les-Bains
and the beach at Zuydcoote, just east of it; the Grafton and Greyhound, on
patrol between Fairy Bank and Kwint Bank buoys, and the Wakeful, just
arrived at Dover from Plymouth, were hurried to the beach at La Panne.
The wording of some of the signals4 conveying these orders reflects the
desperation felt that night, a desperation which, in spite of the course of sub-
sequent events, was at the time only too well-founded. " Had the situation
appeared less critical," observes Admiral Ramsay, an organised flow of large
and small craft, working in reliefs, would have been arranged."⁵
Yet a further batch of vessels arrived off the beaches that evening; the
17 available flare-burning drifters of the Dover Auxiliary Patrol⁶ had sailed
for Dunkirk during the afternoon, and on arriving were diverted to the beaches
by the Wolfhound, in accordance with a signal from the Vice-Admiral, Dover⁷,
and anchored close inshore. The boats from the Wolfhound and Wolsey, and

Boy Roy and Paxton damaged and beached
At 1215 German fighters in strength were encountered by our fighter patrols;
during the rest of the day there was no further air fighting¹, but the mine-
sweeper Sandown was bombed off the Gull Light buoy at 1230, and Bray beach
was bombed at 1420². In an air raid off Dunkirk channel at about 1800, the
prifters Boy Roy and Paxton were damaged by near misses and had to be
beached; there were, however, no casualties.
Difficulty of synchronising arrival of ships with flow of troops
Meanwhile, at 0935, 2,000 troops were on Malo beach and 7,000 more were
on the sand dunes, waiting anxiously for ships to come³. An hour after mid-
day, 6,000 troops were reported to be on Bray beach, 7 miles east of Dunkirk
pier, and 4 minesweepers were sailed from the Downs to embark them. When
they arrived at 2130, however, conditions had changed, and three of them,
the Salamander, Fitzroy and Skipjack, went to La Panne ; the fourth, the
Sutton, went to the beach at Zuydcoote 4 miles east of Dunkirk4. Throughout
the whole operation it was never found possible to adjust the arrival of ships,
either at Dunkirk or opposite the beaches, to synchronise with the ebb and
flow of troop concentrations.
Shortage of drinking water.
At this time the troops were sorely in need of drinking water; joint naval⁵
and military measures were taken to provide it in tanks and cans, and ships
off the beaches were directed to do what they could from their own resources.
There was, however, inevitably some delay before all requirements could be
met, and as late as the 30th May no water or food had yet reached Malo beach⁶.
Brighton Belle sunk
Meanwhile, at 1230, the Brighton Belle, returning to Ramsgate with the 350
troops she had picked up from the beach at Zuydcoote, struck a submerged
wreck off the Gull Light buoy during an air attack and sank. All the crew
and troops were transferred to the Sandown, Medway Queen, and Yser. Pay-
master Sub.-Lieut. W. J. Butler, R.N.V.R., of the Sandown was killed and
2 ratings were wounded.
Shortage of boats
At 1420, when Bray beach was bombed, S.N.O., Dunkirk, ordered some of
the troops there to march to Dunkirk in spite of the congestion in the port.
By 1830, however, there were still several thousand troops at Bray and more
were arriving. At this time the Grafton reported that she was off Bray beach
