REPORT OF OPERATIONS AT DUNKIRK.
1st Trip.
Left Ramsgate a.m. Thursday 30th May in motor
yacht Rygate II with a crew of 4 civilians. Boat broke
down en route, and I had a tow from the "Hortse", who sent
a stoker aboard to see whether he could repair the engine.
After an hour he reported that he couldn't repair it, so
we were taken onboard the Hortse, leaving Rygate II
anchored. It was decided that my crew and myself should
pull ashore in the 3 ship's skiffs and bring the troops off
This we did, having two men in each boat. Whilst pulling
in on one occasion a salvo of bombs burst on the beach
killing many French troops, and an Able Seaman pulling
ashore with me received a machine gun bullet in the groin.
Another bomb fell approximately 20 yards from Hortse, but
caused no damage.
There was a heavy surf running, which made
pulling awkward. My skiff capsized twice, but we managed
to pull her to the beach, empty and refloat her. About
midnight the captain of the "Hortse" decided to move farther
in as the tide was rising. The anchor was fouled however,
and the donkey broke down. As the cable was being out,
the Chief E.R.A. remorted that the engines wouldn't work.

Dynamo end now at Sheerness are required at Toughs Bros.Yard
Teddington for overhaul. Those Motor Boats not mentioned
should remain at Sheerness pending further instructions.
Tug will call Sheerness at low water to embark Lt.Comdr.Dusting
who is to see that Motor Boats in following list are sent to
Toughs. Vessels capable of steaming should accompany tug under
own power.

over with them to Dunkirk. He returned on Tuesday and we reported
to C.O. Davies who informed us that as the weather had deteriorated for

Here began one of the worst experiences of the whole job like for a
