The Verity cleared the entrance and

The wreck of the Grenade was now
drifting down on to the five trawlers;
the John Cattling was ordered to
attempt to pull her clear. [This
trawler remained in the harbour until
dark to assist the Piermaster].
The Polly Johnson and the Brock
picked up troops and survivors and
proceeded out of harbour; the Arley
was clear, and Lieut. Bill just
managed to jump aboard the Fyldea
as she was leaving the pier. These
4 trawlers then proceeded to the
beaches, where, however, there were
found to be adequate ships for the
troops available.

Near Nieuport Bank buoy, the Arley,
which had been standing by the
Polly Johnson, which was leaking
badly and whose engines were damaged
embarked her crew and troops and sank
her by gunfire.

With Brock in company, the Fyldea
proceeded to the Jaguar, off Nieuport
Bank buoy; a destroyer the Express
was alongside her taking off her
troops. The Fyldea was ordered to
escort the Jaguar, which had no boats.
The Brock was ordered to proceed
independently.

Fourth air attack; four dive bombers
attacked the Jaguar. A fifth bomber
attacked the Fyldea and dropped 6
bombs. The Fyldea took evasive
action; no damage. Jaguar was now
able to increase speed and was soon
out of sight.

Between T and S buoys, Fyldea overtook
Brock, who could only steam at half
speed. Fyldea embarked Brock's
survivors and troops, 3 of whom were
seriously wounded.

arriving off the beaches spent more than 48 hours on
ferrying work, and in salving craft; and in towing off
ships aground. Underwent the common experience of being
stormed by French troops and having to repel these
boarders in order to save his ship. When isolated,
attacked by 4 Messerschmitts with machine-guns for about
half an hour, and at other times was under sporadio gun-
fire. Ferried off a total of about 400 French troops.
This civilian displayed a complete disregard of danger
and showed a high order of seamanship.

With a crew of one stoker and one ordinary seaman,
carried out two independent trips to the beach and to Dunkirk
harbour. Encountered great difficulty off the beaches due
to deep draught of lifeboat, and during the night rescued a
number of troops from motor-launch and drifting boats off
shore. Was dissatisfied with his efforts and proceeded
back to Dunkirk harbour, where during the night 2/6 - 3/6
under artillery fire ferried off about 700 troops to various
ships, and assisted in removing troops from the personnel
vessel ROUEN aground in the harbour. Finally returned to
Dover with a full load. This was Morris's first experience
as Coxswain of any boat. He showed great determination and
gallantry under fire in his independent command.

tow and brought her to Ramsgate. Ship flying French
Mercantile flag, valued about £1,000 and should be
open to salvage for myself and crew. Launch belongs
to the Skylark Shipbuilding Co., Poole, and has
3 mile limit off Britain for cruising.

Half a dozen Thames river launches resembling nothing so much
as the upper decks of elongated motor-buses with their rows
of slatted seats, but given a tang of the waterside by rows of
white-painted lifebuoys slung around the upper rails.
The very names of these latter craft are redolent of the
quiet of Richmond, Teddington and Hampton Court; "Skylark",
"Elizabeth" and "Queen Boadicea". A strange flotilla indeed
to be taking an active part in what has been described as "the
greatest naval epic in history".
The crews and their officers too were as miscellaneous an
assembly as the craft they manned. First arrived a trickle
of R.N.V.R. Sub-Lieutenants direct from training school, taken
from their class-rooms often in the midst of a lecture on the
"practical pilotage" they were soon to put to such good account.
Many of these were entering a naval dock-yard for the first
time in their lives, yet they clambered over the little ships,
bawled for their requirements in food, fuel and water and set
to work to prepare for the task in hand, as if to the manner
born.
Next came another thin trickle - this time junior Royal
Navy officers who but a short time before were midshipmen on
war vessels of various types; little more than schoolboys, yet
each possessed of that indescribable sangfroid and cheerful
discipline which is the hall-mark of the British naval officer
whatever his age or rank.
Lastly - and only a matter of minutes before the time of
departure - came the crews; Royal Fleet Reserve men this first
batch - tough, stout-hearted and disciplined. No time to pick
or choose; stoker ratings first, to man the little engines -
one man to each boat; then the seamen - "Swarm over those
boats men and wherever you find an officer aboard ask him if he
needs a crew! Three men to the larger boats and two each to
the smaller".

On arriving at Sheerness Motor Boat Dook on Friday, 31st May, 1940, we
received command of the above convoy with instructions to pick up British Troops
from the shores round Dunkirk as soon as possible. This was at 2 p.m; by 2.15 p.m.
we were under way heading out to sea.
Good progress was made until later that night we lost contact with lighter X.95
although we spent some time in trying to locate her without success.
At 11 a.m. 1st June land was sighted, paniol Where were we? The one and
decidedly irregular compass, the Deviation of which we never knew, which perhaps
was tust as well. brought us to a buoy round which was painted -"Ostend". This

proceeded under tow of VRDEDA. Tow broke down - returned to port.
Overhauled engines of one or two other M/B's.
Saturday, 1st June.M/B. SKYLARK. Towed by RIGA to near Dunkirk.
Transferred survivors to RIGA from French Destroyer, who had picked
them up from torpedoed ship.
RIGA returned to Dover, and I returned under own
power by Kellet cut to Dover by about 10.0 p.m. Reported at CAMBER
and returned to Granville Steps.
Sunday, 2nd June. Transferred in charge of MICHAEL STEPHINS
Lowestoft Lifeboat - 2 Stokers and 1 A.B. from Transit Camp for crew.
Overhauled engines, fuelled and provisioned - proceeded under tow of
Tug SUN XI. Arrived Dunkirk, after dark about 2230 hours. Entered
harbour and went toward Eastern Mole. Rammed by M.T.B. without much
damage. Went alongside Eastern Mole. With difficulty got 12 French
soldiers aboard. Proceeded out to find tug which had disappeared,
landed troops on trawler. Returned to harbour, being rammed by
another M.T.B. on the way. Found Sloop (identification letters S.G.
or s.c.). Owing to swish of tide she could not come alongside, so
with the big engines of the lifeboat I pushed her alongside and went
aboard to help make fast. Climbed on to Mole, which was being shelled,
and by means of some forceful language and a rifle butt, Induced the
French troops who were lying on the Mole to start down on to the
Sloop. Once a few had started they all began to go down. Got 52
into the lifeboat and cast off to try and find tug. After searching
for some time, and being hit again by a fishing boat, I decided at
0100 to return under my own power to Dover.
Reported a floating mine by morse to a destroyer about
6 miles E.S.E. of N. Goodwin Light Vessel.
Reached Dover and landed French troops at 0710.
Returned lifeboat and reported at Submarine Camber
at 0730.
Shrapnel on Eastern Mole was mostly at first confined
to outer end of Mole until the Sloop drew alongside. Then the
range shortened, I got the definite impression that someone had been
spotting for the guns, as the direction of fire shortened very
rapidly and accurately. Suffered no casualties though among my
contingent. In fact, I found considerably greater risk from the
movements of allied craft then from Nazi shelling. There seemed to
be no attempt to keep any rule of the road. Outside the Harbour
had one attack from a Nazi plane. No hits, but she may just have
been having a blind shot at four of us who were altogether.

Crew: Cadet Rating A.I. Foster and Stoker Roberts.
The "Skylark" was towed over by H.M.D. "FYLDEA" and
eventually arrived at Dunkirk at about 0700 on Saturday June
1st. The boats were sent to the beaches. "Skylark" towed in
the "Eastbourne Belle" whose motor had broken down. The
"Eastbourne Belle" ran onto a submerged car and the towing Line
became entangled around the screw of the "Skylark". C.R.Foster
went over the side and cut this rope free. We then proceeded
to the beach and picked up about 70 British Tommies and one
officer. These were taken aboard the "Fyldea".

Second trip we picked up the crew of the Ferry "Nymph"
(motor boat) and about 60 British Tommies. These were taken
aboard the "Fyldea".
3.
Third trip, picked up about 70 French troops. We
returned to the "Fyldea" but found she was aground. After an
unsuccessful attempt to tow the "Fyldea" off I decided to try
and get the French I had away - we were being bombed.
4.
I left the harbour and met H.M.S. WORCESTER outside.
I put the troops aboard her and started to return to the "Fyldea"
for the others but the "Skylark's" motor stezedup. We therefore
abandoned the "Skylark" which was slightly on fike and embarked
on the WORCESTER. The WORCESTER was seriously bombed and Cadet
Rating Foster slightly injured by a machine gun bullet - he was
the only casualty.

Sir,
I have the honour to submit the following report of certain
proceedings affecting H.M.T. "Strathelliot" on May 30th and 31st,
June 1st and 2nd 1940.
Acting on orders received from P.M.S.O., Sheerness, I
repaired on board H.M.T. "Strathelliot" at 10.30 May 30th with
instructions to escort a convoy of motor cruisers to Ramsgate. The
executive signal was received at 1410, anchor was immediately weighed
and the convoy was picked up at 1430.
The route ordered was via 33 QZS, but as certain boats had
proceeded into the Princes Channel, I ordered course to be laid through
that channel so that we should not lose touch with them. At 1550 we
hove to and took in tow two disabled boats the "Skylark" and
Court Belle II" - proceeding at 1635. At 1800, we again hove to to
await boats astern, and they coming up, we took in tow the "Mary Rose",
proceeding at 1840. At 1845 we were again compelled to stop, as
certain other vessels were in trouble, but these being taken in tow by
others, we got under way again at 1910.
Our orders were to close the Examination Vessel off the
N. Goodwin L.V. for instructions, but, as we approached we received
orders by R/T to prodeed to Ramsgate and to report to the N.O.I.C.
there. We arrived off Ramsgate about 2200 and came to anchor -
ordering all motor boats to make fast to the trawler. I then went
aboard motor boat "Forty Two", whose officer was a Lieutenant R.N.R.
in aommand of the boats and put off to search for three boats lost
in the darkness. These we fortunately picked up near the Gull Buoy
and escorted to the "Strathelliot". I then went ashore in "Forty Two"
and reported to the N.O.I.C. at 2305.
I was then ordered ny him to escort the convoy to Dunkerque,
but having received orders from Sheerness to return, I requested
permission to telephone Sheerness for confirmation. This being given,
I collected orders, route orders and charts, being ordered to sail
immediately. I then returned to the "Strathelliot" and asked the
Lieutenant R.N.R. to call all the officers in command of motor boats
to the trawler. They were then given orders and charts so that in
the event of their losing touch with the escort, they would be able
to proceed alone.
I arranged to hoist a red lantern of low visibility in the
trawler, so that boats could keep in touch with us in the dark and
slao arranged certain signala which were to be made on our siren to
cause the convoy to heave to, to proceed or to ease down. I gave
orders to be prepared to move off at 0200 and the officer returned to
their boats. There were eight defective boats to be towed and
arrangments were made as to which hoats were to do the towing. In the
darkness however, it was impossible to hold to these arrangements,
but all the defective boats were taken in tow by others. Anchor was
weighed at 0205 and the convoy proceeded to sea.

due to the strain on the tow caused by the heavy seas, and, as she
was in danger of foundering, her crew were taken off and a cargo of
ladders and petrol and all serviceable stores aboard transferred to
the "Strathelliot" the boat being them cut adrift. We then closed
a trawler "KO" and semaphored her to sink this boat which she did.
At 0845, we took in tow the "Malden Annie IV", nut at 0855
her Port mooring bollard tore away and the towing hawser was then
secured to the Starboard. This was showing signs of parting, and
finally tore away at 0940. The hawser was then secured to a small
hook.
At 1000 we closed the trawler "Grimsby Town" and sent a
message ashore by her reporting our position. A mechanic was put
aboard the "Malden Annie IV" to try to effect repairs to her magneto,
but this was found to be impossible. A hawser was then passed right
round underneath her and was secured on deck, the towing hawser being
bent to this. This hawser parted at 1215, when "Malden Annie IV"
reported that water was entering due to damage received forward. A
new hawser was passed and the vessel towed stern first. A great deal
of damage. had been caused to her superstructure by heavy seas crashing
her into the trawler, but having lost two ships, I was loth to lose
a third. The tow parted twice more in the course of the afternoon, but
the vessel was eventually taken to Dunkerque. I would like to mention
the conduct of the officer in command of the "Malden Annie IV" who
worked extremely hard under very trying conditions to bring his ship
to port.
At 1530 we were proceeding down the channel into Dunkerque
when a destroyer came out firing on and being fired on by batteries
ashore. It was impossible for us to steer out of her line of fire,
due to our tow, but fortunately, although shells were falling close
to us and planes were trying to bomb the destroyer, we sustained no
damage the mearest shell being about 70 yards on our starboard beam.

in the "Frightened Lady" which was beached after fouling

build a jetty with trailers etc. Left the beaches in the
"Horst".
26. Sub Lieut. A.V. Weaver, R.N.V.R. - Went over in "Quijijana"
and brought back a party of 18 troops mostly Coldstream
Guards. He went over again in "Sun X".

Sub Lieut. W.G.H. Bonham, R.N. went over in "BOBELI"
in the first batch and ferried until about midnight on
Wednesday night. His boat was broken up by a destroyer
which went full ahead while he was alongside. He went
on ferrying for a bit but had to abandon the "Bobeli" and
returned to Margate in the "Albury". He then went over
in the "Horst" which had to be abandoned owing to engine
trouble and a near miss.

Sub Lieut. J.W. Culham, R.N. - in "Smolt" which broke
down on way over and was towed back by "Midas" ?. Went
over in "Glitter II" to the beaches about 6m East of
Dunkirk arrived at 1600 on Wed. 29th. Stayed ferrying
until 0200 on Thursday when she lost her rudder on some
wreckage and was towed back to Dover by a drifter. The
"Black Arrow" was seen aground at Dunkirk.

Dunkirk and then back to Ramsgate. He went over again

attempted to salve W. D. craft HAIG, all his crew and
himself at one time or another falling overboard.
Finally broke down at mid-day on the 3rd, close to the
Coast, and was in grave peril of falling into enemy hands
Southwest of Dunkirk. LADY CABLE drifted helplessly
about the Channel for many hours before being rescued.
Sub. Lieutenant Cadell, suffering from a weak heart,
underwent considerable physical strain, and there is no
doubt that he and his crew displayed remarkable courage,

arriving off the beaches spent more than 48 hours on
ferrying work, and in salving craft; and in towing off
ships aground. Underwent the common experience of being
stormed by French troops and having to repel these
boarders in order to save his ship. When isolated,
attacked by 4 Messerschmitts with machine-guns for about
half an hour, and at other times was under sporadic gun-
fire. Ferried off a total of about 400 French troops.
This civilian displayed a complete disregard of danger
and showed a high order of seamanship.

capped by the extremely unreliable engine of his boat, he
showed great determination in making the best use of his
craft and ferrying a large number of troops. After the
final breakdown of his motor-boat, he was appointed
Skipper of H. M. Drifter YORKSHIRE LASS and under the
command of Lieutenant-Commander Prior, R.N., did excellent
work in the Inner Harbour, Dunkirk, on the night of June
2nd.

Naval Officer in Charge, Ramsgate.
At 2.30 a.m. on the 3rd instant saw motor cruiser
under sail and abandoned off Dunkirk. Took her in
tow and brought her to Ramsgate. Ship flying French
Mercantile flag, valued about £1,000 and should be
open to salvage for myself and crew. Launch belongs
to the Skylark Shipbuilding Co., Poole, and has
3 mile limit off Britain for cruising.

Half a dozen Thames river launches resembling nothing so much
as the upper decks of elongated motor-buses with their rows
of slatted seats, but given 8 tang of the waterside by rows of
white-painted lifebuoys slung around the upper rails.
The very names of these latter craft are redolent of the
quiet of Richmond, Teddington and Hampton Court: "Skylark",
"Elizabeth" and "Queen Boadicea". A strange flotilla indeed
to be taking an active part in what has been described as "the
greatest naval epic in history".
The crews and their officers too were as miscellaneous an
assembly as the craft they manned. First arrived a trickle
of R.N.V.R. Sub-Lieutenants direct from training school, taken
from their class-rooms often in the midst of as lecture on the
"practical pilotage" they were soon to put to such good account.
Many of these were entering a naval dock-yard for the first
time in their lives, yet they clambered over the little ships,
bawled for their requirements in food, fuel and water and set
to work to prepare for the task in hand, as if to the manner
born.
Next came another thin trickle - this time junior Royal
Navy officers who but a short time before were midshipmen on
war vessels of various types; little more than schoolboys, yet
each possessed of that indescribable sangfroid and cheerful
discipline which is the hall-mark of the British naval officer
whatever his age or rank.
Lastly - and only at matter of minutes before the time of
departure - came the crews; Royal Fleet Reserve men this first
batch - tough, stout-hearted and disciplined. No time to pick
or choose; stoker ratings first, to man the little engines -
one man to each boat; then the seamen - "Swarm over those
boats men and wherever you find an officer aboard ask him if he
needs a crew! Three men to the larger boats and two each to
the smaller".

It is impossible to give the story of every ship, although each ship has its

tide and unoccupied. She was found to be in working order; the engine was
started up and Sub-Lieut. Godman took an A.B. and a soldier as crew. He
left Petty Officer Morrison in charge of the steam pinnace with orders to lay off
and wait for the return of the Marsayru.
With the dinghy in tow the Marsayru proceeded to the western end of the

On arriving at Sheerness Motor Boat Dook on Friday, Fist May, 1940, we
received command of the above convoy with instructions to pick up British Troops
from the shores round Dunkirk as soon as possible. This was at 2 p.m; by 2.15 p.m.
we were under way heading out to sea.
Good progress was made until later that night we lost contact with lighter X.95
although we spent some time in trying to locate her without success.
At 11 a.m. 1st June land was sighted, panic! Where were we? The one and
decidedly irregular compass, the Deviation of which we never knew, which perhaps
was Just as well. brought us to a busy round which was painted -"Ostend". This

Friday, 31st May. Took charge of M/B. SKYLARK, overhauled engine,
proceeded under tow of VROIDA. Tow broke down - - returned to port.
Overhauled engines of one or two other M/B's.
Saturday, 1st June.M/B. SKYLARK. Towed by RIGA to near Dunkirk.
Transferred survivors to RIGA from French Destroyer, who had picked
them up from torpedoed ship.
RIGA returned to Dover, and I returned under own
power by Kellet cut to Dover by about 10.0 p.m. Reported at CAMBER
and returned to Granville Steps.
Sunday, 2nd June. Transferred in charge of MICHAEL STEPHINS
Lowestoft Lifeboat - 2 Stokers and 1 A.B. from Transit Camp for crew.
Overhauled engines, fuelled and provisioned - proceeded under tow of
Tug SUN XI. Arrived Dunkirk, after dark about 2230 hours. Entered
harbour and went toward Eastern Mole. Rammed by M.T.B. without much
damage. Went alongside Eastern Mole. With difficulty got 12 Fyench
soldiers aboard. Proceeded out to find tug which had disappeared,
landed troops on trawler. Returned to harbour, being rammed by
another M.T.B. on the way. Found Sloop (identification letters S.G.
or S.C.). Owing to swish of tide she could not come alongside, so
with the big engines of the lifeboat I pushed her alongside and went
aboard to help make fast. Climbed on to Mole, which was being shelled,
and by means of some forceful language and a rifle butt, Induced the
French troops who were lying on the Mole to start down on to the
Sloop. Once a few had started they all began to go down. Got 52
into the lifeboat and cast off to try and find tug. After searching
for some time, and being hit again by a fishing boat, I decided at
0100 to return under my own power to Dover.
Reported a floating mine by morse to a destroyer about
6 miles E.S.E. of N. Goodwin Light Vessel.
Reached Dover and landed French troops at 0710.
Returned lifeboat and reported at Submarine Camber
at 0730.
Shrapnel on Eastern Mole was mostly at first confined
to outer end of Mole until the Sloop drew alongaide. Then the
range shortened, I got the definite impression that someone had been
spotting for the guns, as the direction of fire shortened very
rapidly and accurately. Suffered no casualties though among my
contingent. In fact, I found considerably greater risk from the
movements of allied craft then from Nazi shelling. There seemed to
be no attempt to keep any rule of the road. Outside the Harbour
had one attack from a Nazi plane. No hits, but she may just have
been having a blind shot at four of us who were altogether.

Crew: Cadet Rating A.I. Foster and Stoker Roberts.
The "Skylark" was towed over by H.M.D. "FYLDEA" and
eventually arrived at Dunkirk at about 0700 on Saturday June
1st. The boats were sent to the beaches. "Skylark" towed in
the "Eastbourne Belle" whose motor had broken down. The
"Eastbourne Belle" ran onto a submerged car and the towing line
became entangled around the screw of the "Skylark". C.R.Foster
went over the side and cut this rope free. We then proceeded
to the beach and picked up about 70 British Tommies and one
officer. These were taken aboard the "Fyldea".
2.
Second trip we picked up the crew of the Ferry "Nymph"
(motor boat) and about 60 British Tommies. These were taken
aboard the "Fyldea".
3.
Third trip, picked up about 70 French troops. We
returned to the "Fyldea" but found she was aground. After an
unsuccessful attempt to tow the "Fyldea" off I decided to try
and get the French I had away - we were being bombed.
4.
I left the harbour and met H.M.S. WORCESTER outside.
I put the troops aboard her and started to return to the "Fyldea"
for the others but the "Skylark's" motor stezedup. We therefore
abandoned the "Skylark" which was slightly on fike and embarked
on the WORCESTER. The WORCESTER was seriously bombed and Cadet
Rating Foster slightly injured by a machine gun bullet - he was
the only casualty.

Sir,
I have the honour to submit the following report of certain
proceedings affecting H.M.T. "Strathelliot" on May 30th and 31st,
June 1st and 2nd 1940.
Acting on orders received from P.M.S.O., Sheerness, I
repaired on board H.M.T. "Strathelliot" at 10.30 May 30th with
instructions to escort a convoy of motor cruisers to Ramsgate. The
executive signal was received at 1410, anchor was immediately weighed
and the convoy was picked up at 1430.
The route ordered was via 33 QZS, but as certain boats had
proceeded into the Princes Channel, I ordered course to be laid through
that channel so that we should not lose touch with them. At 1550 we
hove to and took in tow two disabled boats - the "Skylark" and
Court Belle II" - proceeding at 1635. At 1800, we again hove to to
await boats astern, and they coming up, we took in tow the "Mary Rose",
proceeding at 1840. At 1845 we were again compelled to stop, as
certain other vessels were in trouble, but these being taken in tow by
others, we got under way again at 1910.
Our orders were to close the Examination Vessel off the
N. Goodwin L.V. for instructions, but, as we approached we received
orders by R/T to prodeed to Ramsgate and to report to the N.O.I.C.
there. We arrived off Ramsgate about 2200 and came to anchor -
ordering all motor boats to make fast to the trawler. I then went
aboard motor boat "Forty Two", whose officer was a Lieutenant R.N.R.
in aommand of the boats and put off to search for three boats lost
in the darkness. These we fortunately picked up near the Gull Buoy
and escorted to the "Strathelliot". I then went ashore in "Forty Two"
and reported to the N.O.I.C. at 2305.
I was then ordered ny him to escort the convoy to Dunkerque,
but having received orders from Sheerness to return, I requested
permission to telephone Sheerness for confirmation. This being given,
I collected orders, route orders and charts, being ordered to sail
immediately. I then returned to the "Strathelliot" and asked the
Lieutenant R.N.R. to call all the officers in command of motor boats
to the trawler. They were then given orders and charts so that in
the event of their losing touch with the escort, they would be able
to proceed alone.
I arranged to hoist a red lantern of low visibility in the
trawler, so that boats could keep in touch with us in the dark and
slao arranged certain signala which were to be made on our siren to
cause the convoy to heave to, to proceed or to ease down. I gave
orders to be prepared to move off at 0200 and the officer returned to
their boats. There were eight defective boats to be towed and
arrangments were made as to which hoats were to do the towing. In the
darkness however, it was impossible to hold to these arrangements,
but all the defective boats were taken in tow by others. Anchor was
weighed at 0205 and the convoy proceeded to sea.
At the North Goodwins L.V., the convoy was hove to and all
ships accounted for; course then being set vis U.V. and W. buoys for
Dunkerque roads. The seas had by this time become very heavy, due to a

I therefore as she was unlikely to be of any use at
Dunkerque-even presuming we could get her there-she should be
abandoned and sunk. I therefore ordered the rest of the convoy to
proceed under the Lieutenant R.N.R.. We then took off the crew of the
"Mary Rose" and fired one tray of Lewis gun ammunition into her water
line, finally breaking her up by ramming her to prevent her becoming
a danger to navigation. We then proceeded after the convoy and picked
up another boat which was being towed.
At 0820, the "Skylark" sustained further damage to her stern
due to the strain on the tow caused by the heavy seas, and, as she
was in danger of foundering, her crew were taken off and a cargo of
ladders and petrol and all serviceable stores aboard transferred to
the "Strathelliot" - the boat being them cut adrift. We then closed
trawler "KO" and semaphored her to sink this boat which she did.
At 0845, we took in tow the "Malden Annie IV", nut at 0855
her Port mooring bollard tore away and the towing hawser was then
secured to the Starboard. This was showing signs of parting, and
finally tore away at 0940. The hawser was then secured to a small
hook.
At 1000 we closed the trawler "Grimsby Town" and sent a
message ashore by her reporting our position. A mechanic was put
aboard the "Malden Annie IV" to try to effect repairs to her magneto,
but this was found to be impossible. A hawser was then passed right
round underneath her and was secured on deck, the towing hawser being
bent to this. This hawser parted at 1215, when "Malden Annie IV"
reported that water was entering due to damage received forward. A
new hawser was passed and the vessel towed stern first. A great deal
of damage had been caused to her superstructure by heavy seas crashing
her into the trawler, but having lost two ships, I was loth to lose
a third. The tow parted twice more in the course of the afternoon, but
the vessel was eventually taken to Dunkerque. I would like to mention
the conduct of the officer in command of the "Malden Annie IV" who
worked extremely hard under very trying conditions to bring his ship
to port.
At 1530 we were proceeding down the channel into Dunkerque
when a destroyer came out firing on and being fired on by batteries
ashore. It was impossible for us to steer out of her line of fire,
due to our tow, but fortunately, although shells were falling close
to us and planes were trying to bomb the destroyer, we sustained no
damage the mearest shell being about 70 yards on our starboard beam.
On two other occasions between 1530 and our arrival off Dunkerque
but sustained no hits. We came to anchor off Dunkerque beaches ( as
beaches at 1620, we received salvoes of bombs intended for destroyers
close in as our draft would allow) and eventually attracted the attentior
of a motor launch manned by Sea Scouts. They came alongside and we asked

Skipper A. Gardner, R.N.R. - Went in Tug "Tanga" arrived
at the beaches at 2200 on Friday, May 31st. They were
bombed and machine-gunned throughout the night, while
lying off an inprovised jetty. He helped to ferry troops
in a power life boat which "Tanga" had towed. This broke
down and he returned on Saturday in "Leda", leaving the
life boat.
23. Sub Lieut. E.T. Garside, R.N.V.R. - Went to Le Panne in
"Elizabeth Green" and ferried for larger craft. He
sighted "Viewfinder" on the beach. He got back to
Ramsgate on Thursday May 30th, transferred to the R.F.A.
launch "Andora II" and returned to beaches where he ferried
for a bit and then brought back 23 French. Arrived
Ramsgate on Friday. On Monday night he was towed over in
the "Elizabeth Green" by a tug, which he could not after-
wards find and so he brought his load home.
24. Sub Lieut. R. Shrimpton, R.N.V.R.- In an Admiralty, open
36 ft. launch he was towed over by a drifter and pent
Saturday night at the beaches. On a later night he went
into Dunkirk.
25. Sub Lieut. S.C. Allen, R.N.V.R. Went over to Le Panne
in the "Frightened Lady" which was beached after fouling
the screw. He reported to an Admiral with side whiskers
who was escorting Gort. He was told to help some soldiers
getting abandoned pinnaces away. He also assisted to
build a jetty with trailers etc. Left the beaches in the
"Horst".
26. Sub Lieut. A.V. Weaver, R.N.V.R. Went over in "Quijijana"
and brought back a party of 18 troops mostly Coldstream
Guards. He went over again in "Sun X".
27. Sub Lieut. W.G.H. Bonham, R.N. - went over in "BOBELI"
in the first batch and ferried until about midni on
Wednesday night. His boat was broken up by a destroyer
which went full ahead while he was alongside. He went
on ferrying for a bit but had to abandon the "Bobeli" and
returned to Margate in the "Albury". He then went over
in the "Horst" which had to be abandoned owing to engine
trouble and a near miss.
28. Sub Lieut. J.W. Culham, R.N. - in "Smolt" which broke
down on way over and was towed back by "Midas" ?. Went
over in "Glitter II" to the beaches about 6m East of
Dunkirk arrived at 1600 on Wed. 29th. Stayed ferrying
until 0200 on Thursday when she lost her rudder on some
wreckage and was towed back to Dover by a drifter. The
"Black Arrow" was seen aground at Dunkirk.
29. Sub Lieut. R.A.W. Pool, R.N. - Took lighter X.817 to
Dunkirk and then back to Ramsgate. He went over again
on last night to Dunkirk in the M.T.B. "Marlborough".

Sub Lieut. E.G.B. R.N.V.R. - in "Skylark" but
she sank on the way over. He also saw "Mary Rose" sink
in mid ocean and the "Ellen Mary" run down by a life
boat and abandoned.

"Lansdowne" which slipped her tow outside Dunkirk.

Sub Lieut. W.E. Mercer, R.N.V.R. of "Strathelliot" -
saw the Mary Rose" and "Skylark" sink in mid ocean,
crew all brought back. Following were seen abandoned
as Dunkirk :- "Malden" "Annie IV" and "Empress".
The former was used as a pier.

"Scene Shifter" was swamped by French troops on
Wed. June 29th. "Triton" was cast off while in
tow with foul screw.

Lieut. W.B. Whitworth, R.N. did 6 trips in "Aeger".

Mr. R. Brown - went over in "Madame Sansgene" on
night of Monday June 3rd. Elgar H. Jefferey and his
brother were also in the boat. Towed over by "Tanjar"
(Tug) with another Motor boat. On way back boats
fouled a rope, which had been veered by the "Tanjar"
to stutch it as it was new, and the boats had to be
abandoned. The "Madame Sansgene" claimed to have
shot down a bomber.

P.O. E. Wells, R.N.R. - went over in "Nanette II",
who had a Lieut. R.N.V.R. in charge. They went to
Ostende an then to Dunkirk and brought back mostly
French troops, some of whom had been in the water
for 12 hours. "Nanette" was finally returned to

Coxn. George Senior, O.N. 239990 - In YC 73
(Lieut. Mortimer R.N.R. 1/c). Left Sheerness on
Wed, May 29th for Ramsgate. Sailed from Ramsgate at
2245 on Thursday night and arrived at Dunkirk at
1100 on Friday. The only soldiers on the beaches
there, 45 of them, were ferried off in the vessels
skiff. They left Dunkirk about 1830 towing YC 71
and a Thornycroft motor boat. The YC 72 broke down
herself about midnight and anchored. H wever, the
Thornycroft boat managed to start up again and must
have informed Ramsgate for a tug came out about 0700
and towed YO 78 and YC 71 back to Ramsgate.
