Before leaving the beach, I explained the situation to the
Adjutant of the R.A.S.C. unit who had been accompanying no
during the afternoon.
On arrival onboard the ABRL TASHAN, Licutenent Doal
informed me that in my absence Licutenant Wykehm-Hartin
had refloated the ALICE and achored her. He then received
a message from the ALICE informing him that the engines
of the ALICE had completely broken down and also informed
me that the crew etc. had gone over to the KAAP-PALOA which
weighed and proceeded without orders from Lieutenant Deal,
or informing him of his intentions.
The situation was then appreciated by the Commanding
Officer La Panne, Lieutenant Beal and myself, and Lieutenant
Beal decided that Lieutenant llykeham-Martin and his First
Lieutenant were capable of dealing with the situation that
had arisen. The Adjutant of the R.A.S.C. who une remaining
ashore knew the orders that had been issued. The possibility
of towing the-ALICE to Bray Dunes by the ABEL TASMAN was
considered. Owing to the absence of personnel, boats and
goar, this project was considered warrantable to delay
departure. I consulted Lieutenant Beal and the Colonel
Commending the R.A.S.C. unit, who was Senior Officer, La Panne,
and It was decided that I should take over the duties of
First Lieutenant (Lleutenant Deal being single handed) and
assist in bringing the ABSL TASMAN back to Dover as it was
considered that I could serve no useful purpose otherwise.
The situation who reported to Commander-in-Chief,
Dover, on arrival and he, approving of the appointment, I
remained as second in command.
The movements of ABRL TASHAH have been reported
by the Commanding Officer.
