ACCOUNT OF PROCEEDINGS OF H.M.S. DELTA ( DUTCH SKOOT)
DURING DUNKIRK EVACUATION OPERATIONS
on May 21st.
First arrival off Beach East of Dunkirk was ab ut 0130
Failed to contact troops apparently too far to Westward.
H avily shelled from shore from 0330 to 0415. No damage.
Second attempt was made between 2200, and 2300 May 30th.
About 2000 as we roached, Ship was machined gunned and hit
in stany places. Leading Hand Pogson hit on steel helmet but
unhurt.
Took aboard some 300 troops. Troops landed at Margate
stores and fuel taken aboard.
Left Margate 2130 May 31st.
Contacted Beach 0850 June1 1st. Several bombe dropped close
but no damage.
Embarkation operations prolonged owing to surf but
eventually left with about 300 troops.
Landed trooss at Ramagate. Ship hold in readiness for
another trip but was eventually told to proceed Tilbury for
paying off.
GENERAL REHARKS
Ship slow, and baily formal, engines bad.
Crow generally PAW but very keen and on the whole did
marvellous work, heavy continuously cheerful and willing.
I should like to mention Lieutenant 3. Little R.N.R.
full of initiative and invaluable when under fire and approaching
H.M.S. Beaver). This officer did not apare himself. He -
the shore. He handled the crew excellently.
9001 and handled the wheel well. He controlled
Leading Seaman Posson (Devonport). This rating wa very the
crew under fire and looked after stores atc very Little well under
working continuously to help the troops and look after
adverse orfectly circumstances. Both he and Licutenant were the
wounded, and neither spared themselves.
I thoroughly regard recommend this officer for command.
With to Lieutenant Little, should an opening occur
