DURING DUNKIRK EVACUATION OPERATIONS
on May
First 21st. arrival off Beach East of Dunkirk was about 0130
Failed contact troops: apparently too far to Westward.
Heavily to shelled from shore from 0330 to 0415. No damage.
Second attempt was made between 2200, and 2300 May 30th.
About 2000 as we approached, hip was machined gunned and hit
unhurt. in many places. Leading Hand Pogson hit on steel helmet but
stores and fuel taken aboard.
Took aboard some 300 troops. Troops landed at Margate;
Left Margate 2130 May 31st.
Contacted Beach 0850 June1 1st. Several bombs dropped close
but no damage.
Embarkation operations prolonged owing to surf but
eventually left with about 300 troops.
Landed troops at Ramsgate. Ship held in readiness for
another trip but was eventually told to proceed Tilbury for
paying off.
GENERAL REMARKS
Ship slow, and badly forned, engines bad.
Crew generally raw but very keen and on the whole did
marvellous work, being continuously cheerful and willing.
I should like to mention Lieutenant E. Little R.N.R.
full of initiative and invaluable when under fire and approachiing
( H.M.S. Beaver). This officer did not spare himself. He was
the shore. He handled the crew excellently.

Leading Seaman Pogson (Devonport). This rating was very the
cool perfectly and looked after stores etc very Little were
crew circumstances. Both he and Lieutenant after the
working adverse continuously to help the troops and look
wounded, and neither spared themselves.
