With reference to Admiralty Letter N.L. 6245/40 dated 1st August, 1940, be pleased to lay before Their Lordships the following report resulting from an Enquiry into the circumstances attending the loss of H.M. Drifter "Paxton" on 28th May, 1940. 2.- Temporary Skipper A. M. Lovis, R.N.R. the surviving officer who was in command of "Paxton" was examined on 27th August, 1940. 3.- At about 1630 a near miss from a bomber diving low blew a hole in the ship's port side. She made water instantly but as engines were still working she proceeded, sinking steadily, to a position in the harbour clear of the fairway where in about 20 minutes she settled down and was abandoned with gunwale awash in shallow water. 4.- All S.P's and charts had previously been thrown overboard in a weighted bag and in deep water. 5.- In the circumstances in which this vessel was lost no useful information as to the behaviour of material was obtained. 6.- I was assisted in my enquiry by Commander F.
