With reference to Admiralty Letter M.L.6245/40 dated 1st August, 1940, be pleased to lay before their Lordships the following report resulting from an enquiry held into the circumstances attending the loss of H.M. Drifter "Lord Cavan" on 1st June, 1940. 2. Commander A.J. Cubison, D.S.C., R.N. who, as Senior Officer of the group was on board at the time, was examined on 3rd September, 1940. 3. At about 2200 on 1st June "Lord Cavan" embarked a General Officer and his staff at Dunkirk Pier to transfer them to a Destroyer berthed at the Seaward End of the pier. 4. When shoving off from the Pier a shell hit the ship on the port side forward just on the water line, passing through the messdeck and out through the Starboard side, bursting on the pier. The explosion made a hole about two feet square in the Starboard side. Ship flooded and sank in three minutes. 5. There were no C.Bs. or S.Ps. on board. 6.
