Page 93. Operation "DYNAMO" - Recomme idations of Personnel. st H.M.S. KING ORRY. - Commander Jeffery Elliott, R.N.R. This ship completed one trip, bringing back 1,100 batteries troops, and whilst on her way back was fired over at by shore for 20 minutes and hit three times. In addition, at the same time the ship was bombed and machine gunned, but no damage resulted. The damage from shell fire was made good and the ship again sailed for Dunkirk. on the way over dive bombing attacks took place, bombs exploded under water and the ship was shaken badly. A 2nd attack outside the harbour put the steering gear out of action and smashed all instruments and woodwork. Ship manoeuvred into the harbour. Another attack took place and again there were near misses. Ship was holed under water forward and aft but pumps appeared to keep water down. As ship would most probably be attacked at dawn it was felt that it would be better to clear the harbour and so avoid blocking the channel. When clear of the harbour, however, ship took a serious lift and water entered the stokeholds. In the end the ship foundered clear of the channel. n Recommendation. OFFICER: Commander Jeffery Elliott, R.N.R. n By his initiative, gallantry under fire and good seamanship, ship was placed alongside at Dunkirk under great difficulties due to steering gear having been put out of action and his decision to move ship out of harbour during dark hours prevented the ship 1 from blocking the harbour and the channel.
