Operation "DYNAMO" - Recommendations of Personnel.
S. ICARUS. - Lieutenant-Commander Colin Douglas Maud, R.N.
ICARUS made 6 trips during the period 29th May - 2nd
June, bringing home about 5,000 troops. 2 trips were to
the beaches, during the first of which there were frequent
air attacks on ship and beaches. While in Dunkirk on two
separate attacks. trips the harbour was subjected to heavy air
Whilst returning to Dove: on the 29th and in a crowded
channel which prevented zig-zagging, ICARUS was attacked by
at least 10 aircraft and later by one persistent low level
bomber. All attacks failed due to the use of smoke and
violent and well-judged alterations of speed. Similar
avoiding action on the 31st May foiled another bomb attack.

Displayed initiative during the operations and by
the skilful handling of his ship in crowded waters
during heavy air attacks avoided damage.

Lieutenant-Commander Edward Gregson Roper, R.N., Executive Officer.
Who, by his example of coolness and unfailing
cheerfulness under fire, kept the ship's company in
good heart and also by his good organisation ensured
rapid embarkation of troops from beaches and Dunkirk
pier.

Showed great coolness and bravery during the
periodical air attacks on the 29th May whilst in charge
of the boats ferrying troops from Bray beach,
