Recommendations of Personnel.
H.M.S. MEDWAY QUEEN - Lieutenant Alfred Thomas Cook, R.N.R.
This ship completed 7 trips to Dunkirk and the beaches
between the 27th May and the 3rd June. During the time she
was off the beaches she used her own boats for evacuating
troops. The boats, whilst embarking the troops, were
continually under fire, and the ship herself was bombed
and machine gunned several times. Two enemy aircraft were
shot down and altogether over 3,500 troops were brought back
to England.
Recommendations.

Lieutenant Alfred Thomas Cook, R.N.R.
By his great skill, pertinacity, devotion to duty
and able seamanship, was able to complete 7 trips.
DSC.
The entries into Dunkirk harbour were made in the dark,
and under very difficult conditions, due to wrecks and
the congestion in Dunkirk. Although the ship was
bombed many times, by his skill he was able to avoid
any damage being done to the ship.
Recommended for decoration.
Lieutenant John David Greaves, R.N.R.
With great gallantry and devotion to duty whilst

under fire, evacuated troops from the beaches in the
boats belonging to the ship.

Engineer Sub. Lieutenant James Irvin, R.N.R.
By his devotion to duty and leadership kept the

engines in an efficient state, although the 1st and
3rd Engineers had collapsed through exhaustion.

Was in general charge of the boats, and with great
gallantry and devotion to duty evacuated many troops

ashore during the evacuation, organising the troops
