Commodore Maintenance Taylor was appointed to Sheerness for duty
Division, Admiralty. He built up an organisation from
Tuesday 28th May, and prepared a multitude of small craft
for service on the coast, with special items of equipment
water. and organised the manning, either from volunteers or
demanded from time to time such as rafts, ladders, lifebuoys,
by men from the Chatham Depot. This Sheerness organisation
acted as a clearing house and despatching point for these
vessels, the total number sent out from Sheerness being about
125 by: Sunday, June 2nd. Commodore Taylor then proceeded
to Ramsgate to help the Naval Officer in Charge, and to
assist in the co-operation of the motor boats etc., with the
larger vessels. On the last 2 nights of the evacuation, at
my request, he personally organised and conducted the
operation of the motor boat flotilla from Ramsgate to
evacuate French from the St. Malo beach and from the inner
Harbour Dunkirk, both of which localities were regarded as
positions of honour, being at that time under continuous
shell fire. These ventures were eminently successful, and
a large number of French troops were dealt with by Commodore
Taylor's craft. To these craft fell the honour of being
the last units to leave Dunkirk in the early hours of June
4th.
