The difference was most marked in the case of personnel vessels, which were civilian manned and consequently less efficient in boat work. The average lift of all types of ship and the time spent in collecting the load at beaches and in harbour respectively was as follows :- AVERAGE LIFT PER TRIP : AVERAGE NO. OF MINUTES SPENT: from beaches 344 at beaches 345 from harbour 529 in harbour 117 i.e. one man per minute was lifted from the beaches as against 4.5 men per minute from the harbour. The average lifts and number of minutes required by large ships to load at beaches and harbour, respectively, from day to day are shown in the following table. Data of waiting times for small craft are incomplete and consequently reliable figures cannot be given; much time was occupied by small craft in ferrying troops to larger ships.
