A note about image and OCR quality

Every reasonable effort has been made to present these document images as flat, straight and accurately cropped as possible. Historical records can be difficult to photograph or scan because of tight bindings, deep gutters, page curvature, folds, creases, fragile paper, uneven edges, shadows, glare, skewed pages, fading, stains, tears, attachments and restrictions on how a document may be handled. These conditions can distort parts of an image and consequently affect the OCR transcription.

Considerable post-production work has been undertaken to crop, align, flatten and enhance the images where practicable, but the results represent our best effort rather than exact facsimiles. Text showing through from the reverse of a page, printed backgrounds, stamps, ruled lines, marks and text visible from neighbouring pages may confuse or spoil OCR output. Handwriting is not reliably recognised and, in most places, may be missing, incomplete or incorrectly transcribed. Always check the page image and, where accuracy matters, consult the original record held by the identified archive.

In compliance with the request of a deputation of Yacht Owners and others interested in Yachting, the Committee of Lloyd's Register of Shipping determined in 1877 to provide a Register for the faithful and accurate Registration of Yachts and to adopt Rules and Regulations for the Classification of this description of vessel. The Register of Yachts, which is printed solely for the use of Subscribers, was first issued in 1878, and has since been issued annually, except during the years 1916-17-18. A supplement containing additions and corrections is usually issued during the year. The Register of Yachts contains the names, particu- lars and characters of Yachts classed by the Society, together with the particulars of other Yachts which are considered to be of interest to Subscribers, illustrated plates of the Flags of Yacht and Sailing Clubs, together with a List of Club Officers, an illustrated List of the Distinguishing Flags of over 1000 Yachts, a List of the Names and Addresses of Yacht Owners, and much other information of interest to Yachtsmen. Of American and Canadian Yachts particulars of only the larger vessels are included in the book, as a separate Register containing a List of Yachts of the United States and Canada is published from the Society's Office at 17, Battery Place, New York.	Information for the Register is obtained from the Society's Surveyors, the Registrar General of Shipping, Yacht Owners, Builders, Designers, and from various other sources. It would be appreciated if Yachtsmen, and others interested in the book, would assist the Committee in making it as complete and accurate as possible by giving early intimation of any changes of ownership, by forwarding any other information of interest to the compilers, and by replying promptly to any enquiry which may be addressed to them by the Society. In this connexion it may be explained that although the book is published in May, it is necessary for the work to be placed in the Printers' hands by the end of February, the Register Section being passed for press alphabetically from that time onward until the end of March. The Flag Section is re-drawn by the Lithographers every year, and this work is begun early in January and completed about the middle of March. The Society undertakes, upon request of the responsible parties, the survey of Yachts during construction or of Yachts already built, with a view to Classification being assigned by the Committee of Lloyd's Register. Particulars can be obtained upon application to the Head Office, or to any of the Society's Surveyors.
