A note about image and OCR quality

Every reasonable effort has been made to present these document images as flat, straight and accurately cropped as possible. Historical records can be difficult to photograph or scan because of tight bindings, deep gutters, page curvature, folds, creases, fragile paper, uneven edges, shadows, glare, skewed pages, fading, stains, tears, attachments and restrictions on how a document may be handled. These conditions can distort parts of an image and consequently affect the OCR transcription.

Considerable post-production work has been undertaken to crop, align, flatten and enhance the images where practicable, but the results represent our best effort rather than exact facsimiles. Text showing through from the reverse of a page, printed backgrounds, stamps, ruled lines, marks and text visible from neighbouring pages may confuse or spoil OCR output. Handwriting is not reliably recognised and, in most places, may be missing, incomplete or incorrectly transcribed. 100A	Character of Yachts built of Steel or Iron in accordance with or equal to the Society's Rules and Tables.	1 The figure 1 after a character signifies that the Yacht is well and efficientlyequipped (see Equipment Tables of the Society's Rules for Yachts).
A	Without a numeral prefixed, character assigned to Steel Yachts not built in accordance with the requirements of the Society's Rules, but found to be efficient.	A line thus --- after the letter A, A or A signifies that the equipment is not in accordance with the Society's Rules.
A	Without a numeral prefixed, character assigned to Iron and Steel Yachts already built to which the Society's Rules do not apply.	In the case of Yachts classed R. the figure 1 for equipment is not employed, the equipment being required in these cases to be in accordance with the Rules for Yachts of the International Rating Classes before the class is assigned.
A	Character of Wood or Composite built Yachts of the first class. The figures prefixed to the character thus, 18 A, 12 A, indicate the term of years for which the Vessel is at present classed. Figures placed within parentheses thus, (17) C(11), indicate the expired term of years - originally if on the first line, and on continuation or restoration if on lower lines.	t Prefixed to the class of a Yacht indicates that she is also classed in the Register Book for Merchant Ships, and that the scantlings are equal to the requirements of the Society's Rules for the same. The figures under a Character denote the date when the Yacht was last Surveyed by the Society's Surveyors.
A	Without a terin of years indicates that the Yacht, though not built according to the Society's Rules, is considered worthy of the class assigned.	When the port and date of Survey only appear, without the Yacht's Character, the Character has expired or been withdrawn because a Survey prescribed in the Society's Rules has not been held, or on account of non-payment of fees.
R	Character of Yachts built in accordance with the Rules for Yachts of the International Rating Classes both as regards scantlings and equipment. The tigures prefixed to the character thus, 16R. 14 R, in the case of Wood and Composite Yachts, indicate the term of years for which the Yacht is at present classed.	This sign before a Character thus, 100A1, denotes that the Yacht has been built under Special Survey. This sign before a classification record of Machinery thus LMC NE&B indicates that the Engines and Boilers or both (according to the record which follows) have been built under Special Survey.
