OPERATION "DYNAMO" - RECOMMENDATIONS OF PERSONNEL.
H.M. S. "VERITY" - Lieutenant Commander Arthur Ronald Mawson Black.
While escorting two transports from Dover to Dunkirk
on 27th May, H.M.S. "VERITY" and her convoy came under heavy
shell fire from several shore batteries near Calais. One
transport was hit and both then turned for home. "VERITY"
engaged the batteries and made smoke covering their
retirement which was successfully carried out, though not
without transports receiving further damage.
"VERITY" was
also hit, incurring several casualties including her
Commanding Officer seriously wounded.
On 28th and 29th May the ship completed two round trips
to Dunkirk, conveying 500 men.
RECOMMENDATIONS.
OFFICERS:
Lieutenant Commander Arthur Ronald Mawson Black, R.N.
Acted with great promptitude, coolness and determination
in covering the withdrawal of the two transports.
Although severely wounded he remained at his post on
the bridge of his ship until he lost consciousness.

Lieutenant Eric Lister Jones, R.N.
This officer, who was first Lieutenant of the ship
showed cool leadership and a fine example whilst under shell
fire for half an hour on 27th May.

He subsequently commanded the ship during two trips to

M.S. IVANHOE. - Commander Philip Henry Hadow, R.N.
Made 1 trip to Dunkirk beach and 2 to Dunkirk pier,
bringing home a total of about 2,900 troops. On 1st June
when returning to Dover with 1,000 troops on board she was
subjected to heavy level bombing attacks by a large number
of aircraft, but all these attacks were avoided.
Off Dunkirk dive bombing attacks developed and
IVANHOE received considerable amage from 2 near misses
and one bomb exploded near the base of the foremost funnel:
casualties 26 killed and 30 wounded.
Amongst other damage, Nos. 1 and 2 Boiler Rooms became
flooded. The ship eventually reached Sheerness in spite
of further attacks by a large number of level bombers on
two occasions, though her speed was only 7 knots. The
use of smoke floats to simulate hits appears to have misled
the enemy.
Recommendations.
OFFICERS:
Commander Philip Henry Hadow, R.N.
Handled his ship with skill during evacuation
from Dunkirk and the beaches, and skilfully brought
her home when severely damaged by bombing in spite
of subsequent heavy bombing attacks by large numbers
of aircraft.

Lieutenant (E) Andrew Cormack Mahony, R.N.
By his coolness and energy set a fine example
to his department when dealing with the damage below
after the ship had been bombed. He rapidly assessed
the damage, and by his efforts succeeded in getting
way on the ship in the shortest possible time.

Sick Berth Attendant Eric James Littlewood Gibson, 56025.
Displayed outstanding zeal and energy throughout.
Without the assistance of any Medical Officer he
dealt most efficiently and untiringly with the
wounded, many of whom were badly maimed and some of
whom he extricated unaided from a pile of corpses
and debris.
Recommended for mention.

Showed great zeal and energy throughout and by a
cool appreciation of the situation was largely
responsible for getting steam on the main engines

H.M.S. HALCYON. - Commander Eric Percival Hinton, R.N.
This ship completed 6 trips to the beaches and Dunkirk 40)
harbour, embarking and bringing back a large number of
troops. Whilst working off the beaches boats were sent
ashore. On one occasion two of the whalers embarking were
riddled with bullets. Ship was shelled from shore
batteries and subjected to many attacks from the air.
Recommendations.
OFFICERS:
Commander Eric Percival Hinton, R.N.
Showed great skill and seamanship in the
manoeuvring of his ship whilst lying off the beach and
also in entering Dunkirk harbour during dark hours due
to the number of wrecks in the vicinity. By his
perseverance and devotion to duty over 2300 were
brought back to England.
Recommended for decoration.
Sub. -Lieutenant John Francis Worthington, R.N.V.R.
Proceeded ashore in order to control the troops,
who at that time were in a disorganised state.
Further, whilst in charge of ship's whaler, remained
perfectly cool whilst under fire transporting a large
number of troops.

and straddled by enemy gunfire, troops rushed to
port and the ship took a list of 20 degrees. Ford

Lieutenant Denis Harold Palmer Gardiner, R.N.
MOSQUITO was subjected to an unusually severe
series of air attacks, during which Lieutenant Gardiner
handled his ship with coolness and courage. He
showed good judgment and seamanship in his work off
the beaches, not only in evacuation with his own
vessel, but in directing the activities of other power
boats in the vicinity.
By remaining off the beaches during his second
visit when subjected to a very severe air attack which
caused minor damage to the ship, and casualties on
board, he succeeded in rescuing a further large number
of troops. MOSQUITO was finally attacked by 20
Junkers and was literally enveloped by salvos and
bombs for a considerable period, and was frequently
hit, the ship commencing to sink. There is no doubt
that Lieutenant Gardiner displayed admirable coolness
and courage throughout these exacting events, and as
Commanding Officer of his ship gave an excellent lead
to his officers and men, who themselves emulated his
gallantry. Before finally leaving his ship, Lieutenant
Gardiner carried out all the duties required by the
regulations and Service custom. He was finally
wounded when on passage in WORCESTER.

Lieutenant Anthony Hugh Manwaring, R.N.
Was mortally wounded. This officer throughout
operations displayed the greatest qualities and
gallantry.
Recommended for posthumous decoration.
Prob. Sub. Lieutenant Eric Sidney Flint, R.N.R.
Displayed conspicuous gallantry although wounded
in the back, leg and arm. Took charge of abandon
ship and was largely responsible for a number of
survivors saved. This Officer is a Reserve Officer
of the very best type and displayed initiative,
resource and devotion to duty while in MOSQUITO.

FLARE-BURNING DRINTERS OF THE DOVER COMMAND.
Captain Eric Wheler Bush, D.S.C., R.N.
continuous service in connection with the Calais operation
These 19 drifters had been employed on 10 days'
and on patrol immediately prior to the commencement of
DYNAMO. Throughout DYNAMO, they worked with marked zeal
where the shelling was most severe. All did well in a
particularly at the post of honour in the inner harbour,
and conspicuous success, rainly at Dunkirk Harbour, and
varying degree and were responsible for lifting to safety
some 10,000 Allied troops.
The following officers and men have been selected
for special recognition of their gallant services.
OFFICERS:

H.M.Drifter THE BOYS: - Skipper Andrew Buchan, R.N.R., W.S.3319.
Skipper A. Buchan, his own ship being under
repair, volunteered immediately for any service, with
the remark that he would do anything for his country.
He was given charge of a tow of Liege lake boats. He
subsequently took command of the drifter YORKSHIRE LASS
embarking soldiers under fire.
His endurance and determination when injured,
clad in rags and completely exhausted, were of the
highest order. He was finally ordered to the sick
list. It is considered that Skipper Buchan's
behaviour was exceptional.
Recommended for decoration.
H.M. Drifter MIDAS. - Skipper Herbert Holden, R.N.R., W.8.3432.
Skipper H. Holden is commended for service in
action when in command of MIDAS. This Officer's
conduct and leadership were of the highest order.

H.M.Drifter BOY ROY:- Skipper Dettman. R.N.R. (Decorated for this
operation in London Gazette of 7th June, 40
Chief Engineman Harry B. Sharman, LT/KX.105182.
When BOY ROY was damaged and in a sinking
condition, he remained in the engine room regardless
of any danger to himself, until his ship was beached,
the water having risen in the meanwhile to the
furnace door. He sent the rest of his engine room
crew up to safety and remained alone at his post.

Dutch Skoot H.M.S. BRANDARIS &c. (Continued).
In the majority of these voyages was under constant
bombing and machine gun attack, as also when in
Dunkirk harbour and lying off the beaches. This
officer worked unceasingly without rest throughout
the 9 days of the operation, with conspicuous
success.
Recommended for mention.
Dutch Skoot H.M.S. DOGGERSBANK - Lieutenant Donald Terry
McBarnet, R.N.
This vessel remained off the Flanders coast for a
greater period than the other skoots, and whilst under
incessant attack from the air succeeded in recovering
from the beach and from Dunkirk harbour more than
1,500 troops.

Lieutenant Donald Terry McBarnet, R.N.
Displayed exceptional initiative and pertinacity
in a variety of difficult circumstances off Bray
beach, in Dunkirk harbour and Dunkirk beach. When
necessary grounded his ship on the beach and devised
many ingenious and seamanlike methods of taking off
troops from the beach by means of life rafts,
abandoned life-boats and other craft which came to
hand, normal boat work being impossible with his
small crew. At all times undeterred and undismayed
by frequent air attacks to which his vessel and
boats were subjected.

Engine Room Artificer, 4th Class, Eric Matthew Horne, MX.62572.
In charge of the engine room department of
DOGGERSBANK. Took over the engines from Dutch
engineer who spoke no English, and succeeded in
keeping the engines running perfectly throughout
the 10 days of the operations.
In addition to engine room duties, generally
assisted the Commanding Officer at all times in
work outside the department, assisting in the
operation. Behaviour under fire was exemplary.

BEACH PARTIES, PIER PARTIES, CONTROL OF EVACUATION
OFF THE COAST AND IN DUNKIRK HARBOUR.
About 35 Naval Officers and 330 Naval ratings
number worked unceasingly without relief or rest, exposed
employed for varying periods on these duties. A great were
to consistent air attacks, and periodical bombardments
from artillery, for up to 7 days. The work of these
Officers and men was of the greatest value, and contributed
largely to the success of the operation.
(of the above, 6 officers and 11 ratings were decorated
in the London Gazette of 7th June, 1940 for this operation).

Captain William Raigersfeld Phillimore, R.N. (Retd.).
Throughout the operation this officer was in sole
charge of the Base Organisation at Ramsgate and
Margate which quickly assumed very large proportions.
He worked ceaselessly day and night and his foresight,
coupled with excellent powers of judgment, enabled
small craft to be brought rapidly into service and
mtaintained throughout, thus enabling a large number
of troops to be successfully evacuated from the
beaches in small craft which had a direct bearing
on the enterprise as a whole. His leadership and
example were an inspiration to all.

Captain Eric Fitzgerald Wharton, R.N. (Retd. (Lent from
Admiralty S.V.P.)
For outstanding zeal and devotion to duty while
in charge of all small craft taking part in the
operation from Ramsgate. This officer, lent from
Admiralty Small Vessels Pool, took charge of and
directed all small craft - rowing boats, cutters,
whalers, barges and motor-boats. He spent
consistently long hours at the East Pier throughout,
coping successfully with as mixed a collection of
craft as were ever gathered together.

Paymaster Lieutenant-Commander John Wissett Edelsten. R.N.

For outstanding zeal and devotion to duty in
carrying out the functions of my office during a
trying week, remaining on duty consistently long hours
throughout. Dealt with all Naval casualties and
burials, with large numbers of delivery crews,
volunteers, merchant seamen, civilian yacht and
boatowners and with all Officers who took part.
He produced personally all operational orders and
sailing orders for a vast number of craft, and
improvised maps of Dunkirk Harbour Quays, which he
reproduced on the duplicator and issued to the
vessels taking part.

Lieutenant Graham James Alexander Lumsden. R.N.
showed great ability in manoeuvering ship and
avoiding repeated dive bombing attacks in very restricted
waters. After the ship had been abondoned he remained
behind to ensure that everything possible was done to save
the ship and to destroy secret charts etc. Later his
coolness and courage was very noticeable when the St. Abbs
was bombed and sunk.
Recommended for mention.
(Is being recommended for decoration on account
of service at Boulogne on 23rd May, just prior
to operation "Dynamo")
Lieutenant Robert Walker Hughes, R.N.
Showed great courage in repairing W/T aerial during
repeated bombing attacks. When ship was sinking showed
imitiative in destroying signal books and apparatus. After
receiving injuries in the Tug St. Abbs his courage and
devotion to duty assisted in survivors escaping to Dover for
in the wreck of the Clan Mac Allister.
Recommended for decoration.
Midshipman Harry Batten Poustie, R.N.R.
The good bearing, coolness and initiative of this
young officer in face of danger was most noticeable.
Remained on board to assist with destruction of secret
documents. Later assisted in clothing and feeding survivor
on board Clan Mac Allister including the care of two badly
wounded men.
Recommended for decoration.

Acting Petty Officer Ernest F. Standley C/JX 137068.
In charge of H.A. gun. By his leadership, courage
and coolness kept his gun in action during repeated
bombing attacks which caused casualties to his crew in
their exposed positions.

MOSQUITO was subjected to an unusually severe
series of air attacks, during which Lieutenant Gardiner
handled his ship with coolness and courage. He
showed good judgment and seamanship in his work off
the beaches, not only in evacuation with his own

visit when subjected to a very severe air attack which

varying degree and were responsible for lifting to safety
some 10,000 Allied troops.

Skipper A. Buchan, his own ship being under
repair, volunteered immediately for any service, with
the remark that he would do anything for his country.
He was given charge of a tow of Liege lake boats. He
subsequently took command of the drifter YORKSHIRE LASS
embarking soldiers under fire.
His endurance and determination when injured,
clad in rags and completely exhausted, were of the
highest order. He was finally ordered to the sick
list. It is considered that Skipper Buchan's
behaviour was exceptional.

troops from the beach by means of life rafts,
abandoned life-boats and other craft which came to

BEACH PARTIES, PIER PARTIES, CONTROL OF EVACUATION
OFF THE COAST AND IN DUNKIRK HARBOUR.
About 35 Naval Officers and 330 Naval ratings were
employed for varying periods on these duties. A great
number worked unseasingly without relief or rest, exposed
to consistent air attacks, and periodical bombardments
from artillery, for up to 7 days. The work of these
Officers and men was of the greatest value, and contributed
largely to the success of the operation.

Throughout the operation this officer was in sole

charge of the Base Organisation at Ramsgate and
Margate which quickly assumed very large proportions.
He worked ceaselessly day and night and his foresight,
coupled with excellent powers of judgment, enabled
small craft to be brought rapidly into service and
mtaintained throughout, thus enabling a large number
of troops to be successfully evacuated from the
beaches in small craft which had a direct bearing
on the enterprise as a whole. His leadership and
example were an inspiration to all.

For outstanding zeal and devotion to duty while
in charge of all small craft taking part in the
operation from Ramsgate. This officer, lent from
Admiralty Small Vessels Pool, took charge of and
directed all small craft - rowing boats, cutters,
whalers, barges and motor-boats. He spent
consistently long hours at the East Pier throughout,
coping successfully with as mixed a collection of
craft as were ever gathered together.

carrying out the functions of my office during a
trying week, remaining on duty consistently long hours

boatowners and with all Officers who took part.
He produced personally all operational orders and
sailing orders for a vast number of craft, and

Operation "DYNAMO" - Recommendations of Personnel.
H.M.S. IVANHOE. - Commander Philip Henry Hadow. R.N.
Made 1 trip to Dunkirk beach and 2 to Dunkirk pier,
bringing home a total of about 2,900 troops. On 1st June
when returning to Dover with 1,000 troops on board she was
subjected to heavy level bombing attacks by a large number
of aircraft, but all these attacks were avoided.
Off Dunkirk dive bombing attacks developed and
IVANHOE received considerable damage from 2 near misses
and one bomb exploded near the base of the foremost funnel
casualties 26 killed and 30 unded
Amongst other damage, Nos. 1 and 2 Boiler Rooms became
flooded. The ship eventually reached Sheerness in spite
of further attacks by a large number of level bombers on
two occasions, though her speed was only 7 knots. The
use of smoke floats to simulate hits appears to have mislei
the enemy.
Recommendations.
OFFICERS:
Commander Philip Henry Hadow, R.N.
Handled his ship with skill during evacuation
from Dunkirk and the beaches, and skilfully brought
her home when severely damaged by bombing in spite
of subsequent heavy bombing attacks by large numbers
of aircraft.
Recommended for mention.
Lieutenant (E) Andrew Cormack Mahony, R.N.
By his coolness and energy set a fine example
to his department when dealing with the damage below
after the ship had been bombed. He rapidly assessed
the damage, and by his efforts succeeded in getting
way on the ship in the shortest possible time.

Displayed outstanding zeal and energy throughout.
Without the assistance of any Medical Officer he
dealt most efficiently and untiringly with the
wounded, many of whom were badly maimed and some of
whom he extricated unaided from a pile of corpses
and debris.

Showed great zeal and energy throughout and by a
cool appreciation of the situation was largely
responsible for getting steam on the main engines

This ship completed 6 trips to the beaches and Dunkirk

harbour, embarking and bringing back a large number of
troops. Whilst working off the beaches boats were sent
ashore. On one occasion two of the whalers embarking were
riddled with bullets. Ship was shelled from shore
batteries and subjected to many attacks from the air.

Showed great skill and seamanship in the
manoeuvring of his ship whilst lying off the beach and
also in entering Dunkirk harbour during dark hours due
to the number of wrecks in the vicinity. By his
perseverance and devotion to duty over 2300 were
brought back to England.
Recommended for decoration.
Sub. -Lieutenant John Francis Worthington, R.N.V.R.
Proceeded ashore in order to control the troops,
who at that time were in a disorganised state.
Further, whilst in charge of ship's whaler, remained
perfectly cool whilst under fire transporting a large
number of troops.

H.M.S. MOSQUITO - Lieutenant Denis Harold Palmer Gardiner, R.N.
Until sunk by enemy air attack did good work off the
beaches. Evacuated over 1,200 troops, including a large
number of wounded, and the General Officer Command
1st Corps; also took the Personnel Vessel NORMANIA in
tow until she sank, then rescued the crew.
Recommendations.
OFFICERS.
Lieutenant Denis Harold Palmer Gardiner, R.N.
MOSQUITO was subjected to an unusually severe
series of air attacks, during which Lieutenant Gardiner
handled his ship with coolness and courage. He
showed good judgment and seamanship in his work off
the beaches, not only in evacuation with his own
vessel, but in directing the activities of other power
boats in the vicinity.
By remaining off the beaches during his second
visit when subjected to a very severe air attack which
caused minor damage to the ship, and casualties on
board, he succeeded in rescuing a further large number
of troops. MOSQUITO was finally attacked by 20
Junkers and was literally enveloped by salvos and
bombs for a considerable period, and was frequently
hit, the ship commencing to sink. There is no doubt
that Lieutenant Gardiner displayed admirable coolness
and courage throughout these exacting events, and as
Commanding Officer of his ship gave an excellent lead
to his officers and men, who themselves emulated his
gallantry. Before finally leaving his ship, Lieutenant
Gardiner carried out all the duties required by the
regulations and Service custom. He was finally
wounded when on passage in WORCESTER.

survivors saved. This Officer is a Reserve Officer

of the very best type and displayed initiative,
resource and devotion to duty while in MOSQUITO.

FLARE-BURNING DRINTERS OF THE DOVER COMMAND.
Captain Eric Wheler Bush, D.S.C., R.N.
These 19 drifters had been employed on 10 days'
continuous service in connection with the Calais operation
and on patrol immediately prior to the commencement of
DYNAMO. Throughout DYNAMO, they worked with marked zeal
and conspicuous success, rainly at Dunkirk Harbour, and
particularly at the post of honour in the inner harbour,
where the shelling was most severe. All did well in a
varying degree and were responsible for lifting to safety
some 10,000 Allied troops.
The following officers and men have been selected
for special recognition of their gallant services.
Recommendations.
OFFICERS:
H.M.Drifter THE BOYS: - Skipper Andrew Buchan, R.N.R., W.8.3319.
Skipper A. Buchan, his own ship being under
repair, volunteered immediately for any service, with
the remark that he would do anything for his country.
He was given charge of a tow of Liege lake boats. He
subsequently took command of the drifter YORKSHIRE LASS
embarking soldiers under fire.
His endurance and determination when injured,
clad in rags and completely exhausted, were of the
highest order. He was finally ordered to the sick
list. It is considered that Skipper Buchan's
behaviour was exceptional.
Recommended for decoration.
H.M.Drifter MIDAS. - Skipper Herbert Holden, R.N.R., w.s.3432.
Skipper H. Holden is commended for service in
action when in command of MIDAS. This Officer's
conduct and leadership were of the highest order.

Sir,
With reference to Flag Officer Commanding,
Dover's No.B14/0/1101/40 dated 4th June, 1940, and to my report
of proceedings dated 4th June, 1940, I beg to submit the names
of the following officers and ratings who are recommended for
decoration or for mention in despatches.
Lieutenant Alan PHIPPS, Royal Navy. (No previous decorations).
Throughout the operation this officer, by his
cheerfulness and disregard of personal danger, set a high
example to the men. On the early morning of Saturday, 1st June,
when the situation ashore was obscure due to heavy bombardment,
he immediately volunteered to proceed ashore to find out what
was happening. After the ship had been struck he was tireless
in his efforts to disembark the soldiers and look after the
well-being of those who remained on board, and it was due to his
leadership that the fires were so quickly got under control.
Lieutenant (B) Andrew Cormack MAHONY, Royal Navy. (No previous
decorations)
This officer, by his coolness and energy, set a
fine example to his department when dealing with the damage below
after the ship had been struck. He rapidly assessed the damage,
and by his efforts succeeded in getting way on the ship in the
shortest possible time.
Eric James Littlewood GIBSON, Sick Berth Attendant, D/MX. 56025.
(No previous decorations).
This rating displayed outstanding zeal and energy
throughout. Without the assistance of any medical the officer he
whom most badly maimed and some of whom he extricated deserves unaided
dealt efficiently and untiringly with wounded, many of
from were a pile of corpses and debris. His conduct the
highest praise.
