Sir,
I have the honour to report the following proceedings
of H.M.S. "Dwarf" inconnection with evacuation of the
B.E.F.from Dunkirk.
2) H.M.S. "Dwarf" sailed from Portsmouthuat 2100 on
Wednesday 29th May. 1940. for Ramsgate. During the passage
there was nothing of interest to note, and' Dwarf" arrived
at 1700 on Thursday 30th May.
3) After provisioning, coaling and embarking two Lewis
guns, "Dwarf" sailed for Dunkirk at 2000 using route "X"
4) At about 0030 on Friday "Dwarf was some 6 miles
North West of Dunkirk, so waited till daylight before
attempting to enter the buoyed channel to Dunkirk.
During the passage up the channel a formation of
German reconnaissaice aeroplanes appeared overhead.
Every ship in the vicinity, as well as the soldiers

gunner registered several tracer bullets in one of
the machines which turned away to the South.

assistance. She had 150 soldiers on board, and in attempting could

As we were a long way from the French coast I decided
that there was very little chance of HAIG falling into enemy
hands and that no doubt help would soon be forthcoming in
reply to the wireless message I had asked X440 to send.
I hauled down HAIG's ensign and took it aboard LADY CABLE and
we tried to make towards the English coast. Unfortunately
the engine kept stopping and we made very slow progress and
finally nothing would make our engine start again. We
drifted helplessly for several hours and then sighted a Bell
Buoy which I believe may have been the N.W. Goodwin Bell
Buoy, but we did not get close enough to make sure. At
last we sighted a warship and waved HAIG's White Ensign to
try to attract stention. We were seen and the ship altered
course towards us and came up close to LADY CABLE. She was
the French transport ROUEN of Dieppe and was packed with
troops from Dunkirk. An officer asked what I wanted and I
told him that we were broken down and asked to be taken
aboard. To my surprise my appeal was met with a blunt
"No" - with no explanation, and the ROUEN steamed away.
My crew and I felt angry at this in view of the fact that
we had rescued over 200 French soldiers during the night.
No doubt the ROUEN had good reasons for not taking us aboard
but no explanation was given and I would like if possible
to discover why she was unable to help us.
Luckily another ship some considerable distance away
had noticed the ROUEN and observed that she had not picked
us up. This ship was the CITY OF CHRISTCHURCH and she
came up and took us in tow to the Downs where she was bound
for in ballast. On arrival in the Downs where CITY OF
CHRISTCHURCH dropped anchor, we were able to start up the
engine of LADY CABLE and I decided once again to try to make
for Dover. However, we broke down after a run of about
15 minutes and were picked up by a tug (Operational I
don't know her name). She had orders to proceed to Ramagate
with H.M. Drifter VIKING in tow and was about to do this
when we broke down near her. She towed us to the VIKING
and I boarded the VIKING to have my injured foot attended
to and get some rest. VIKING and LADY CABLE were towed round
to Ramsgate where we arrived about 2100. I was landed and
taken to "Merrie England" and then to Ramagate General
Hospital.
The Commanding Officer of VIKING at my request reported
the return of LADY CABLE and that one member of my crew,
Cadet Rating Price was missing but might be aboard French
warship X440. He also reported direct to C. in C., Dover,
about HAIG. A little later, while I was still at "Merrie
England", the Commanding Officer of VIKING arrived to tell
me that he had been informed from Dover that HAIG was safe.
Unfortunately he had no news for me of Cadet Rating Price.
The behaviour of my crew throughout the operation had
been magnificent. The taking off of over 200 French troops
and 6 British from the Mole was conducted quickly and
calmly under difficult and hazardous conditions. Later,
Cadet Rating Price's work in helping to get the HAIG along-
side LADY CABLE cannot be too highly praised. Without the
great initiative and efficiency he displayed the operation
would not have been successful and the HAIG would have
drifted ashore to the S.W. of Dunkirk.

On proceeding to the office of Captain Auxiliary
Patrol, I was informed that "Olvina" should not have gone to
Dunkirk, but should have been on A/S patrol. Accordingly, at
0820/1 June, "Olvina" proceeded to a patrol station 17 miles
NNW of Dunkirk, which was reached at 1125. At 1500, 70
survivors from "Basilisk" came alongside in a French fishing
boat, and at 1917 we went alongside "Whitehall" in Dover
harbour and disembarked them.
"Olvina" was in harbour during 2nd and 3rd June,
and on 4th June escorted "Bideford" to Portsmouth thout
incident.

I have the honour to report the following proceedings
of H.M.S. "Dwarf" inconnection with evacuation of the
B.E.F. from Dunkirk.
2) H.M.S. "Dwarf" 'sailed from Portsmouthuat 2100 on
Wednesday 29th May. 1940. for Ramsgate. During the passage
there was nothing of interest to note, and "Dwarf" arrived
at 1700 on Thursday 30th May.

especially as I was patially incapacitated by a wound on
my left foot.
As we were a long way from the French coast I decided
that there was very little chance of HAIG falling into enemy
hands and that no doubt help would soon be forthcoming in
reply to the wireless message I had asked X440 to send.
I hauled down HAIG's ensign and took it aboard LADY CABLE and
we tried to make towards the English coast. Unfortunately
the engine kept stopping and we made very slow progress and
finally nothing would make our engine start again. We
drifted helplessly for several hours and then sighted a Bell
Buoy which I believe may have been the N.W. Goodwin Bell
Buoy, but we did not get close enough to make sure. At
last we sighted a warship and waved HAIG's White Ensign to
try to attractattention. We were seen and the ship altered
course towards us and came up close to LADY CABLE. She was
the French transport ROUEN of Dieppe and was packed with
troops from Dunkirk. An officer asked what I wanted and I
told him that we were broken down and asked to be taken
abcard. To my surprise my appeal was met with a blunt
"No" with no explanation, and the ROUEN steamed away.
My crew and I felt angry at this in view of the fact that
we had rescued over 200 French soldiers during the night.
No doubt the ROUEN had good reasons for not taking us aboard
but no explanation was given and I would like if possible
to discover why she was unable to help us.
Luckily another ship some considerable distance away
had noticed the ROUEN and observed that she had not picked
us up. This ship was the CITY OF CHRISTCHURCH and she
came up and took us in tow to the Downs where she was bound
for in ballast. On arrival in the Downs where CITY OF
CHRISTCHURCH dropped anchor, we were able to start up the
engine of LADY CABLE and I decided once again to try to make
for Dover. However, we broke down after a run of about
15 minutes and were picked up by a tug (Operational - I
don't know her name). She had orders to proceed to Ramsgate
with H.M. Drifter VIKING in tow and was about to do this
when we broke down near her. She towed us to the VIKING
and I boarded the VIKING to have my injured foot attended
to and get some rest. VIKING and LADY CABLE were towed round
to Ramsgate where we arrived about 2100. I was landed and
taken to "Merrie England" and then to Ramsgate General
Hospital.
The Commanding Officer of VIKING at my request reported
the return of LADY CABLE and that one member of my crew,
Cadet Rating Price was missing but might be aboard French
warship X440. He also reported direct to C. in C., Dover,
about HAIG. A little later, while I was still at "Merrie
England", the Commanding Officer of VIKING arrived to tell
me that he had been informed from Dover that HAIG was safe.
Unfortunately he had no news for me of Cadet Rating Price.
The behaviour of my crew throughout the operation had
been magnificent. The taking off or over 200 French troops
and 6 British from the Mole was conducted quickly and
calmly under difficult and hazardous conditions. Later,
Cadet Rating Price's work in helping to get the HAIG along-
side LADY CABLE cannot be too highly praised. Without the
great initiative and efficiency he displayed the operation
would not have been successful and the HAIG would have
drifted ashore to the S.W. of Dunkirk.

day in a motor boat off the beaches SO as to prevent a recurrence of this waste
of beaching craft².
In spite of the difficulties and shortcomings emphasised in the above reports
great progress was being made. In fact, beach evacuation reached its peak
on this day; 29,500 troops were lifted from the beaches (as against 24,300
from the harbour) ; and some 50 ships, including destroyers, minesweepers,
skoots, trawlers, drifters, personnel and special service vessels, were engaged
continuously in the arduous work.

back to Millhead Creek. Great Wakering.

She is owned by Mr. Tranter. the
manager of Great Wakering brickfields.
and is ideally suited for work in shoal
waters, drawing only 4ft. 6in. of water.
She weighs about a hundred and sixty
tons.
Her master, Mr. Dick Gregory: of Mill
Head Villas, Great Wakering, was very
laconic about his experiences. "It was a
new experience." he said. ** I'd never been
that way before. If need be I'd go again
to-morrow." His nephew. Mr. William H.

G. Ratchiffe, a garage. proprietor. of 51.
Glenhurst Road, Southchurch. I missed
much of the excitement," he said. regret-
fully. " because. as engineer. I was below
most of the time. On the way to Dunkirk
I went on deck for a breath of air: Depth
charges were dropped continually, and in
the distance I saw a dog fight between
R.A.F. fighters and German bombers. The
first trip was accomplished without
incident, but on the second we became
stranded on the beach. German bombers
left us alone at first, thinking we were dere-
lict, but when we attempted to refloat the
boat about thirty German 'planes bombed
and machine-gunned us. The only
casualty was a soldier-tucked away in the
most inaccessible part of the boat-who
was hit on a leg. The effort of refloat-
ing damaged her bows and put the forward
gears of the engines out of action. We
had to make our way back to the warships
in reverse!
Mr. Ratcliffe said he discovered a silver
threepenny bit on the boat, and kept it as
a lucky charm. He estimated that nearly

£500 on account if desired while arrangements are

(b) "Sceneshifter" Agreed to confirm verbal offer of £850.
(c) "Brywyn"
Agreed to wait reply to letter of 5.11.40 and
generally to adopt the principle that owner must
prove his claim.

Agreed to arrange for Mr. Wimpenny (Fisheries
Officer) to contact the owner and explain
Department's position and without committing

Left Southampton 4-30 p.m. 8th. June for Havre. Arrived off
Cape "La Havre" about 10 p.m. and anchored, nothing unusual happened

visibility poor, no pilot or light buoys, but we got in without any
mishap. When getting to the Pier there was another air raid and I
had to stand off till it was over as everyone had taken shelter, no
one left to take our ropes. 1-45 a.m. Monday 3rd. June, we made
fast at the pier, troops came dribbling on board till 6 a.m. We
had about 2000 British troops on board. We sailed for Cherbourg
arriving about 10 a.m. and disembarked the troops and waited orders.
Later got orders to embark the same troops and we sailed with them
at 6 p.m. for Southampton, arriving inside the boom defence about
11 p.m.
BREST.
Saturday, 8th. June.
4 a.m. Left Southampton for Brest, arriving
about 4 p.m. Went into Dock at 6 p.m. and commenced embarking troops
as they came along. Several air raids during the evening. At
midnight was told not to move the ship under any consideration as
the Harbour and Channels outside had been mined.
Sunday. All day troops kept coming on board. We sailed at
5 p.m. Sunday with not less than about 4000 soldiers and arrived at
Plymouth about 4 a.m. Monday 10th. June and disembarked.
LA PALLICE.
Midnight, Monday 10th. June.
Left Plymouth for La Pallice, arrived and
anchored off La Pallice about 7 p.m. on Tuesday 11th. June, awaiting
orders. 3 p.m. Thursday 13th. June, destroyer "МАСКАҮ" came along-
side and put a few refugees on board us and told us to standby to go
into Port as he had heard rumours there were some Russians Poles
making their way to the coast. The "MACKAY" left us at 4-15 p.m.
4-30 p.m. two German bombers came out of a dense smoke bank at us and
opened fire with their machine guns. One passed on each side of us,
dropping bombs which burst not more than 15 ft. from the ship. The
vibration was terrific. One man was hit by shrapnel and put in
hospital on arrival at Plymouth. We were now ordered to heave up
anchor and proceed to Plymouth. After getting under way, we found
our compasses to have about 14°E deviation on Westerly courses and
14° W deviation on Easterly courses and very irregular. We were
escorted by the destroyer to Plymouth where we arrived about 6 p.m.
on Friday 14th. June.

As we were a long way from the French coast I decided
that there was very little chance of HAIG falling into enemy
hands and that no doubt help would soon be forthcoming in
reply to the wireless message I had asked X440 to send.
I hauled down HAIG's ensign and took it aboard LADY CABLE and
we tried to make towards the English coast. Unfortunately
the engine kept stopping and we made very slow progress and
finally nothing would make our engine start again. We
drifted helplessly for several hours and then sighted a Bell
Buoy which I believe may have been the N.W. Goodwin Bell
Buoy, but we did not get close enough to make sure. At
last we sighted a warship and waved HAIG's White Ensign to
try to attract stention. We were seen and the ship altered
course towards us and came up close to LADY CABLE. She was
the French transport ROUEN of Dieppe and was packed with
troops from Dunkirk. An officer asked what I wanted and I
told him that we were broken down and asked to be taken
aboard. To my surprise my appeal was met with a blunt
"No" - with no explanation, and the ROUEN steamed away.
My crew and I felt angry at this in view of the fact that
we had rescued over 200 French soldiers during the night.
No doubt the ROUEN had good reasons for not taking us aboard
but no explanation was given and I would like if possible
to discover why she was unable to help us.
Luckily another ship some considerable distance away
had noticed the ROUEN and observed that she had not picked
us up. This ship was the CITY OF CHRISTCHURCH and she
came up and took us in tow to the Downs where she was bound
for in ballast. On arrival in the Downs where CITY OF
CHRISTCHURCH dropped anchor, we were able to start up the
engine of LADY CABLE and I decided once again to try to make
for Dover. However, we broke down after a run of about
15 minutes and were picked up by a tug (Operational I
don't know her name). She had orders to proceed to Ramsgate
with H.M. Drifter VIKING in tow and was about to do this
when we broke down near her. She towed us to the VIKING
and I boarded the VIKING to have my injured foot attended
to and get some rest. VIKING and LADY CABLE were towed round
to Ramsgate where we arrived about 2100. I was landed and
taken to "Merrie England" and then to Ramsgate General
Hospital.
The Commanding Officer of VIKING at my request reported
the return of LADY CABLE and that one member of my crew,
Cadet Rating Price was missing but might be aboard French
warship X440. He also reported direct to C. in C., Dover,
about HAIG. A little later, while I was still at "Merrie
England", the Commanding Officer of VIKING arrived to tell
me that he had been informed from Dover that HAIG was safe.
Unfortunately he had no news for me of Cadet Rating Price.
The behaviour of my crew throughout the operation had
been magnificent. The taking off of over 200 French troops
and 6 British from the Mole was conducted quickly and
calmly under difficult and hazardous conditions. Later,
Cadet Rating Price's work in helping to get the HAIG along-
side LADY CABLE cannot be too highly praised. Without the
great initiative and efficiency he displayed the operation
would not have been successful and the HAIG would have
drifted ashore to the S.W. of Dunkirk.

Patrol, I was informed that "Olvina" should not have gone to
Dunkirk, but should have been on A/S patrol. Accordingly, at
0820/1 June, "Olvina" proceeded to a patrol station 17 miles
NNW of Dunkirk, which was reached at 1125. At 1500, 70
survivors from "Basilisk" came alongside in a French fishing
boat, and at 1917 we went alongside "Whitehall" in Dover
harbour and disembarked them.
"Olvina" was in harbour during 2nd and 3rd June,
and on 4th June escorted "Bideford" to Portsmouth without
incident.
