Operation Cycle: Evacuation from Le Havre

Operation Cycle was the Allied evacuation from Le Havre and the Pays de Caux during the closing stages of the Battle of France. German forces captured Rouen and drove towards the coast, separating troops around Le Havre from the British and French formations retreating towards Saint-Valery-en-Caux. From 10 to 13 June, Royal Navy, French Navy, merchant and smaller vessels embarked the troops who could reach Le Havre and nearby coastal points. The operation saved the garrison known as Arkforce and other troops at Le Havre, but much of the 51st (Highland) Division and accompanying French forces was cut off farther east. Thousands surrendered at Saint-Valery-en-Caux on 12 June. The ledger shown here records craft drawn from Littlehampton and Newhaven for Cycle, including boats that had already served in Operation Dynamo. Its short hire periods, cancellations and marginal notes reveal how rapidly vessels were assembled, reassigned and released during successive evacuations.
