Instructions were received to proceed to Ramsgate, rendezvous and escort small boat convoy to Dunkirk. The Convoy sailed at 1453 approximately 3 hours after scheduled time. The convoy consisted of 5 tugs and 5 drifters each towing between three and fifteen small boats. The convoy straggled somewhat on the way over and when the Reutigen bouy was reached the leaders were eased down to enable the convoy to arrive together. At this time & large force of German bombers and fighters were seen approaching. There were inumerable ships of all shapes and sizes in the vicinity and & general bombing raid was commenced. DNI n 70 7010 3347 4 during daylight. About half-way across a French trawler with an open boat in tow was hailed. He reported having picked the boat up with soldiers off Dunkirk and it was thought this might be the boat for which we were searching. To make sure we proceeded to Dunkirk where two open boats and a Thames barge with sail set were found approximately three miles from the coast. The first open boat yielded five Spaniards, the second one about 6 soldiers, Belgian, French and English. We then went alongside the Thames barge at approximately 1330. This was found to contain about 320 soldiers including two Colonels and a Major of Artillery, and various wounded. They were endeavouring to sail to England but had made approximately three miles in 10 hours, see note below. Motor-mechanic Whittaker fitted a new piston to the air compressor motor while the 1st Lieut. and myself trimmed the sails. They had no charts on board. The air compressor motor was made to run but all efforts to start the diesel failed. I then left 1st Lieut., Leiut. Serious difficulty was experienced in finding Clan Macalister owing to large number of ships in the Downs and absence of examination vessel. Contact was made however at approximately 2300. Instructions were received to proceed to Ramsgate, rendenvous and escort small boat convoy to Dunkirk. The Convoy sailed at 1453 approximately 3 hours after scheduled time. Opportunity was taken at Ramsgate to off-load all depth charges as It was considered inadvisable to continue carrying these. The convoy consisted of 5 tugs and 5 drifters each towing between three and fifteen small boats. The convoy straggled somewhat on the way over and when the Reutigen bouy was reached the leaders were eased dom to enable the convoy to arrive together. At this the a large force of German bombers and fighters were seen approaching. There were Anumorable ships of all shapes and sizes in the vicinity and a general bombing raid was commenced. CONFIDENTIAL 320c. (For use with S. 1320b). NAVAL MESSAGE. (Revised Dyrams. & S. 356 October, 1935.) te ECRE $5 100 55 1 An Dynam 355 349 Ahel Tasman. 60 65 TTER OF PROCEEDINGS - EVACUATION. a 70 353 during daylight. About half-way across a French trawler with an open boat in tow was hailed. He reported having picked the boat up with soldiers off Dunkirk and it was thought this might be the boat for 14 ich we were searching. To make sure we proceeded to Dunkirk where - two open boats and & Thames barge with sail set were found approximately three miles from the coast. The first open boat yielded five Spanieards, the second one about 6 soldiers, Belgian, French and English. No then went alongside the Thanes barge at approximately 1330. This was found to contain about 220 soldiers including two Colonels and a Major of Artillery, and various wounded. They were endeavouring to sail to England but had made approximately three miles in 10 hours, ⑉ note below. Motor-mechanic Whittaker fitted a new platon to the air compressor motor while the let.Lieut. and myself trimed the sails. They had no charge on board. The air compressor motor was made to run but all efforts to start the diesel failed. I then left my 1st,Lieut., SublLient. Delhamel with instructions to sail the barge to Dover, and proceeded along the coast having opened up the distance to search for the "Girl Gladys". About two miles to the east I found an open boat containing 18 soldiers who were embarked, after which we approached to withing approximately three miles of the coast alightly to the eastward of La Panne. Visibility was good and no sign of the drifter could be seen, the search was therefore abandoned and course was set to intercept the Thanes barge. by eight six or eight dive-bombers, 20 to 30 bomba were dropped At approximately 1720 when out of sight of land we were attached The bombers at appeared to attack in pairs out of the sun and and fell distances varying from 10 to 50 yards of the ship. having released their bombs continued their dive firing machine- to guns. From accounts It would seem that the 220 soldiers arrived at Braye dunes at approximately 0500 and saw the barge lying off-shore. They waded out and found she was aground. One officer examined the engine and when the ship floated with the rising tide, started the diesel. Unfortunately It was in astern and they again beached themselves. After some delay they floated off and again started the engines miting sure It was in ahead. They came up all standing on the anchor. After ineffective efforts to weigh the anchor they ran It out to a clinch and let It go., by which time the air bottles were exhausted and they were unable to start the diesel. They therefore decided to sail, but due to the absence of anyone with sailing knowledge their efforts created nothing but slight lesuay which was counteracted by the set. They were therefore stationary they discovered. when I cannot speak too highly of the conduct of all members of the crew during this somewhat trying time and It is difficult to mention anyone specifically. Lieut Dehammel's safe-condust of the barge is worthy of note, while the tireless energy and keenness of motor-mechanic Whittaker and the efficient way in which be kept the enginee running and dealt with unexpected contingencies was also & magnificient effort. 6.9 9x DAPTAIN A/S H.M.S. Ship sailed again by route Y at 1800 and arrived off La Panne beach at 2130 and commenced embarking troops by ships and other small boats. At 0250 31st May Rear Admiral Dover Straits and staffembarked and later "Express" acted as desired by the Rear Admiral who transferred to "Keith" at 0700/31. More troops were embarked and having got about 600 onboard including Major- General Thorne I proceeded to Dover arriving at 1115. "Express" sailed again by route Y at 1215. While passing 511 buay the ship came under fire from Gravelines batteries and was straddled. This fire was returned. On arrival off Dunkirk roads all ships present engaged enemy aircraft intermitiently who were carrying out bombing attacks and the prospect of going alongside the Eastern side of Dunicirk Pier was investigated. At about 1700 dive bombing attacks on Destroyers off Bray was particularly heavy. Two attacks were carried out on "Express",one salvo was a near miss ahead, and the other straddled, five depth charge type bomba falling close all round the ship. Aircraft were heavily engaged and no damage was sustained except for small breakages. At 1830 "Express" again entered Dunkirk and embarked about 700 troops sailing at 1900. Shortly after a large number of enecty bonbers and fighters attacked ships approaching Dunkirk including a large number of small craft. Several aircraft were seen to be destroyed as a result of our aircraft attacking. After disemberking troops at about 2300/31 "Express" proceeded to oil and at about 0400 1st June secured to buoy and made good small defects including severed Coll. At 2200 2nd June "Express" left Dover and arrived off Dunkirk where there was considerable congestion and I was unable to get wires secured - the bonhardment appeared alongside. Ship entered at 0200/3 but the pier una eapty of troops this time. -359 365 PAGE III ARKS. Traffic on the route at night was somewhat exciting, and the constant meeting of all sorts and conditions of raft similarly engaged, and to the number of wrecks that were encountered, It was fortunate that the wind remained from the North East towards the end, thereby shielding the approach from the fire from Gravelines Batteries. During the bombing attack on Dunkirk p.m. Wednesday 29th May, the ships A.A. fire was most effective. An H.E. from "X" Gun and a burst from the starboard 0.5" Machine Gun were seen to envelop enemy aircraft and it is considered that these two were either destroyed or hit. This was confirmed by the soldiers who were subsequently embarked and who stated that they were much impressed by the whole performance. I have reason to believe therefore that "Express's" fire met with the above measure of success. The performance of all Officers and Men under my command was of the highest order, and to my complete satisfaction during the whole of this operation. Under severe strain all hands remained alert, boats crews while very weary made incessant boat trips, and the constant manning of the armament and its effective employment on all suitable occasions was extremely creditable. The large numbers of troops onboard constantly expressed their appreciation of what was done for in providing such comforts as food drink, and clothing as them by the sailors, who I know did their utmost for them was possible. The Hospital party rendered particularly, constant and valuable assistance to the wounded on board. I have much oride in submitting the attached list of personnel whom I consider worthy of special mention. I have the Honour to be, Sir, Your Obedient Servant, VICE ADMIRAL CAPTAIN. B1461 366 VICE ADMIRAL DOVER. Liquamiz10 & 1225 . 11th June, 1940. 372 Sir, I have the honour to submit the following report of proceedings during operation Dynamo. Individual reports of Commanding Officers of M.T.B's and M.A.S.B's employed will be forwarded as soon as received. I took over command of N.T.B. Base Dover on 27th May, having under my command M.T.B.'s 67, 68, 102, 107 and M.A.S.B.'s 6, 7, 10. During the operation I was at Dunkirk each day and night with the various boats of the flotilla. Having served in C.M.B.'s at Dunkirk and Dover in 1917 I was in a position to compare the notes of these boats, and I would submit the following:- 1. M.T.B's are an invaluable craft for such operations. 2. Aircraft are quite unable to destroy them. Innumerable dive bombing and machine gunning attacks were made and no boats were lost. 3. Spare crews are essential during a prolonged operation as the strain of running these high-powered boats, even in peace time, is very severe on the crews, especially engine room staff. 4. Auxiliary engines are a great advantage. I entered Dunkirk in M.T.B. 102 on the night of the 30th May on auxiliary engines and we were unobserved by either British or enemy craft or batteries. Boats fitted with auxiliary engines are also very manosuvreable in a harbour such as Dunkirk. 5. A really efficient V/S rating is essential. I cannot say enough of the Officers and crews of all the M.T.B's and M.A.S.B's and it was an honour to command them. I consider that the young Officers who commanded these boats acted with great skill and courage and handled their boats in a cool and unhurried manner under heavy artillery

367 - 373 -2- fire and bombing. I would especially mention M.T.B. 102 under the command of Lieutenant Dreyer, who carried out my orders with remarkable skill and coolness and who took R.A.D. off H.M.S. "KEITH" during a dive bombing attack as though he were going alongside a jetty in peace time. Lieutenant Everett in M.A.S.B. 6 evacuated Lord Gort. On one occasion he was subjected to intense machine gun and dive bombing attacks during daylight hours whilst saving the lives of British soldiers off La Panne. Lieutenant Syre of M.A.S.B. 10 also showed himself to be a level headed and gailant Officer and quite untiring. During operation Dynamo no boats were seriously damaged and the casualties only ammounted to four ratings wounded. I have the honour to be Sir Your obedient Servant. Commanding Officer M.T.B's.
