DYNAMO. Throughout DYNAMO, they worked with marked of zeal particularly at the post of honour in the inner harbour, and conspicuous success, rainly at Dunkirk Harbour, and where the shelling was most severe. All did well in a varying degree and were responsible for lifting to safety some 10,000 Allied troops.
The following officers and men have been selected for special recognition of their gallant services.

Picked up by WESTELLA, he used his utmost exertion to save the lives of both crews by getting out boats when WESTELLA was sunk subsequently. Later, after being the for WESTELLA being sunk to prevent her falling internal into rescued for the second time, by SAON, insisted on the need of the enemy and then collapsed, due to injuries. hands He is now in hospital and his condition gives cause for grave anxiety.

Senior Executive Officer of the Dover Minesweeping
Dunkirk 29th May to 30th May. Arriving Dunkirk 1330, they were subjected to continuous air attack between
1530 and 2000 during the most severe air attack of the whole operation which caused heavy losses. At the time, at Dunkirk East Pier were berthed no less than
8 vessels. The trawlers assisted in berthing and n
unberthing these ships, embarking the troops as e
opportunity offered, Lieutenant Bill assisting the
Piermaster on the jetty. During the worst raid at

1800 when all the damage occurred, he personally, by drawing his revolver maintained order among the troops, who were inclined to panic. Under his direction trawlers assisted to clear the harbour of n
ships to safeguard the vital channel from being blocked. Subsequently, he detailed his vessels to assist those damaged, to rescue survivors and troops from the 6 vessels who were sunk or severely damaged.
Throughout this period of severe trial Lieutenant Bill remained cool and self-possessed and set a magnificent example to those around him. He showed sound judgment in his actions and his orders to his trawlers and was largely responsible for the fact that greater loss was iring not incurred. A fine display of officer-like qualities ster and gallantry under fire.

Commodore Taylor was appointed to Sheerness for duty as Dynamo Maintenance Officer from the Economic Warfare
Division, Admiralty. He built up an organisation from
Tuesday 28th May, and prepared a multitude of small craft for service on the coast, with special items of equipment demanded from time to time such as rafts, ladders, lifebuoys, water, and organised the manning, either from volunteers or by men from the Chatham Depot. This Sheerness organisation acted as a clearing house and despatching point for these vessels, the total number sent out from Sheerness being about
125 by Sunday, June 2nd. Commodore Taylor then proceeded to Ramsgate to help the Naval Officer in Charge, and to assist in the co-operation of the motor boats etc., with the larger vessels. On the last 2 nights of the evacuation, at my request, he personally organised and conducted the operation of the motor boat flotilla from Ramsgate to evacuate French from the St. Malo beach and from the inner e

GRIVE left Portsmouth 1530/29th May, arrived Dover
2359/29 and sailed for Dunkirk 1400/30, where for 2½ hours she embarked troops from the East beach with her own boats, arriving back at Dover a.m. 31st with just under 300 troops.
GRIVE left Dover again at 1400/31, entered Dunkirk harbour at 2000/31 and embarked 400 troops during a very in severe air raid. GRIVE arrived back at Dover 0100/1, landed her troops and although having only 5 rounds of ammunition left per gun, sailed again at 0300/1.
Reaching Dunkirk 0800/1 GRIVE went alongside the pier and took off a group of troops during heavy bombing. Leaving harbour GRIVE went alongside HAVANT, which had been hit by a bomb, and was on fire, and took off all her troops and wounded, together with IVANHOE's survivors. GRIVE arrived
Dover 1300/1 with 700 on board.
At this stage Captain Lambart put Lieutenant C.E. West,
R.N.R. (an officer of over 60) ashore, as he had done e
magnificent work handling the ship "and had earned a rest".
Captain Lambart himself, who was 67, would not rest; he assembled his crew, informed them he intended to start off again immediately. The crew were equally determined and, having provisioned and ammunitioned, the ship sailed at
1600/1.

This ship completed one trip, bringing back
1,100 batteries troops, and whilst on her way back was fired over at by shore for 20 minutes and hit three times. In addition, at the same time the ship was bombed and machine gunned, but no damage resulted. The damage from shell fire was made good and the ship again sailed for Dunkirk.
on the way over dive bombing attacks took place, bombs exploded under water and the ship was shaken badly. A
2nd attack outside the harbour put the steering gear out of action and smashed all instruments and woodwork. Ship manoeuvred into the harbour. Another attack took place and again there were near misses. Ship was holed under water forward and aft but pumps appeared to keep water down. As ship would most probably be attacked at dawn it was felt that it would be better to clear the harbour and so avoid blocking the channel. When clear of the harbour, however, ship took a serious lift and water entered the stokeholds. In the end the ship foundered clear of the channel.

Elton thereupon dived into the water and assisted and supported as many of the swimmers as he could find for more than half an hour whilst the dinghy, rowed by the other rating, with loads of men, returned to the BYSTANDER. Whilst in the water Elton put many men on to life-rafts and towed them by swimming. The last men he brought back to the yacht on a life-raft, were towed by Elton in the water acting as a tow-rope with one hand on the raft and one hand on the dinghy - a remarkable feat of endurance. He was responsible for rescuing about 25 Officers and men. In addition to the above, Elton, in his capacity as Cook, supplied hot tea and food to all the 97 men on board within half an hour of leaving the scene of the wreck, the cooking utensils, etc. normally sufficing for 7.
He provided dry clothes and blankets and generally tended the rescued, many 01° whom were suffering from shock. This rating was unsparing in his efforts and

There he was swamped by French soldiers swarming over his boat, which drifted ashore. Later the boat refloated and he took one V.C.O. and 8 British soldiers; he had no crew except one Stoker, who had great difficulty with the engine. Off Dunkirk, on the way home, the engine broke down, so he broke up the yacht's wood fittings and made the 8 soldiers paddle the boat. Later, the engine restarted after furing an 18 hour voyage. Next day, without orders, he ister sailed with a crew of one other Able Seaman, but was vivor turned back as his craft was too slow to take part in the night evacuation ordered for that evening.

This boat was used off the beaches at Dunkirk during severe bombing from the air. Direct hits were registered on several vessels. Boat proceeded to pick up survivors during the bombing attacks, and, having filled up, proceeded towards Ramsgate. On her way across she was fired at by 3 trawlers at 1, 100 yards range, one of whom then tried to ram her. All the crew and survivors overboard except two R.N.V.R. officers and Able Seam
Strand. The R.N.V.R. officers were wounded and Str charge of the boat, narrowly preventing the boat bei:
rammed. The boat was eventually towed to Ramsgate.

Officers and men endured very trying conditions within
Dunkirk harbour during seven hours on 30th May, disembarking o
stores and redeiving troops. She was attacked by M.T.B.'s on the way in. On 28th was twice attacked by aircraft off
Dunkirk and rescued 950 troops and the crew of QUEEN OF THE
CHANNEL, who had been disabled by bombs and was sinking.
Everyone remained calm and gave the utmost assistance to the troops. The E.R.M. staff had to effect repairs under fire. All did well.

In command of Flotilla of 6. Proceeded direct from Southend to Dunkirk without charts on 31/5. Cockle boats found unsuitable for beach work, largely owing to offshore obstructions, worked Flotilla inside Dunkirk harbour and on the outside of the harbour breakwaters from 2130/31 to 0300/1. Flotilla handled about 900
troops, finally returning to Ramsgate fully laden.
Cockle boats being no longer serviceable, commandeered tug and boat taking them to Dunkirk harbour. There employed as interpreter controlling French troops on shore. Was sunk in R.A.F. motor boat by air attack, being one of only two survivors. By a remarkable feat of endurance was swimming for four hours finally climbing unaided into deserted boat. Rescued by French fishing vessel. A gallant young officer who displayed courage, initiative and determination of high order. This officer was especially noted for good work by many semior officers encountered in the operation.

Signed on T.124 agreement and took over motorboat LITTLE ANN to the beaches at Dunkirk. There he was dive-bombed and machine-gunned, and the boat sank.
Notwithstanding this he carried on working at the beaches for four days. DYNAMO being over, he then volunteered for Captain Selby's operation, and after that for CYCLE, when he was severely wounded.

During the operation, Lieutenant R. H. Mead, R.N.V.R., was killed, and the boat carried on with the crew. They proceeded to the beach where they continued taking troops from the shore by night.

This loat did three trips to Dunkirk. The first time with lear Admiral Dover, and remained outside the Harbour under way directing ships to their various berths. Again proceeded to Dunkirk on the second day carrying out the same duties: third trip he assisted with the block ships, carrying out screening duties, and also did very useful work inside the Harbour with regard to ferrying of troops, and picking up survivors from the block ship GOURKA. The greater part of the work was carried out during dark hours when the handling of a boat of this type required great skill.

This M.T.B. did four trips to Dunkirk, where she ferried British and French soldiers, and ganerally acted as despatch boat. Attacked by enemy aircraft, one rating wounded by machine gun bullet.
Whilst patrolling the beaches, she collected and supplied fuel for motor boats, and transferred soldiers to destroyers and also towed motor boats. Due to damage to hull, she returned to Portsmouth on the 1st June.

Dunkirk and subsequently, working in conjunction with a flotilla of small boats at La Panne, was largely responsible for the embarkation under difficulties of 5,000 troops in some 12 hours.
During heavy bomb attack rescued a large number of survivors from KEITH, including 2 British and one
French general officers. Followed this up by rescuing nearly all the survivors of the SKIPJACK.
On the voyage to United Kingdom similarly rescued survivors from the personnel vessel SCOTIA which had been bombed and sunk, only leaving the scene when other vessels appeared and his own craft was dangerously overloaded. Returning to Dunkirk,a further number of troops were taken off the beach, during which time he was bombed and intermittently shelled. Captain Pim, the local Senior Officer at the time of HILDA'S activities, reports most be favourably on the efficient handling and performance nel of Lieutenant Gray.

Bray beach. Subsequently in HAIG further large numbers of men from the Malo beaches, Haggar going ashore in a small boat on several occasions taking charge and marshalling the troops. He also worked the A.A. Lewis gun on board with such skill that
Messerschmitt attacks were repulsed.

3 nights continuous work under way without any rest whatsoever recovered a large number of troops from Dunkirk harbour and La Panne beach, and displayed great seamanship and judgment going alongside H.M.P.S. GRACIE FIELDS when she was bombed and reduced to a sinking condition by enemy aircraft with about 800 troops on board. GRACIE FIELDS was unmanageable and unable to stop her engines. TWENTE
secured alongside under way and removed injured and other survivors until full. Subsequently,
Lieutenant-Commander Boys-Smith commanded two army motor launches and a Dutch motor launch, and completed
3 other trips to Dunkirk beaches and Dunkirk harbour, the majority of which were executed during the worst periods of intensive air attack. Many difficulties were encountered and overcome with the greatest determination.

Displayed coolness and resource under fire during the several trips as coxswain of the TWENTE and later in the motor launch KESTREL. Largely responsible for the successful rescues from the sinking GRACIE
FIELDS by his seamanlike actions. His conduct at all times was admirable.

This rating was Leading Seaman Legg's right-hand man and distinguished himself by displaying unusual coolness and initiative for one of his age (19 years).
In addition, accompanied his Commanding Officer in

the fast Dutch motor launch to Dunkirk Mole, where he displayed conspicuous courage whilst under fire.
This rating has unusual qualities for his age and experience.
Recommended for special advancement to Leading Seaman.

In addition to this trip the ship completed two trips, to Boulogne and Calais prior to the operation, and on this last trip to Dunkirk whilst off the French coast near
Calais, was subjected to very heavy gunfire. Four shells struck the ship.

This ship completed four trips. On the third trip she was bombed and a near miss damaged the ship and put her out of action. In addition to those four trips, she had completed three other trips to Calais and Boulogne, continually subjected to bombing and also gunfire from shore batteries. Near miss put the ship out of use for the remainder of the operation.
