This ship completed 7 trips to the coast off Dunkirk, and evacuated a large number of troops. Was particularly successful off the beaches; was subjected to air attack on more than one occasion, and general activities were so arduous as to cause a number of ratings to be treated for complete exhaustion.

H.M.S. MEDWAY QUEEN - Lieutenant Alfred Thomas Cook, R.N.R.
This ship completed 7 trips to Dunkirk and the beaches between the 27th May and the 3rd June. During the time she was off the beaches she used her own boats for evacuating troops. The boats, whilst embarking the troops, were continually under fire, and the ship herself was bombed and machine gunned several times. Two enemy aircraft were shot down and altogether over 3,500 troops were brought back to England.

The entries into Dunkirk harbour were made in the dark, and under very difficult conditions, due to wrecks and the congestion in Dunkirk. Although the ship was bombed many times, by his skill he was able to avoid any damage being done to the ship.

This ship did four trips, and brought back over
1,500 troops. In addition to taking off a large number of troops from the beach, the NIGER entered Dunkirk Harbour.
The ship was attacked by enemy aircraft.

This officer showed great zeal and initiative and also seamanship in managing to take off a large number of troops from the beaches, and on the morning of the 3rd June entered Dunkirk showing great skill, due to the large number of ships and wrecks in the vicinity.

Lieutenant Robert Peverell Hichens. R.N.V.R.
Landed on the 31st May as a volunteer to organise the beach at La Panne. Succeeded in getting yachts moored and craft lines secured, thus hastening the transport of troops to the waiting ships. He was under shell fire and air attack for a great part of the time. Again on the second day he supervised the embarkation of troops, and twice proceeded to the
Senior Military Officer and got the troops down to the beaches and into the boats. By his initiative and leadership he performed extremely valuable work.

Showed excellent leadership and seamanship in towing boats to and from the beaches under fire.

This ship completed 4 trips and brought back over
1,000 troops, was heavily bombed and machine-gunned many times. Three of these trips the ship worked off the beaches, using her own boats and any other boats that could be found.

This Officer, who took command on the 31st May, owing to his Captain having had an accident, showed great initiative and zeal in making arrangements for troops to be embarked from the beach. Showed great seamanship in the handling of his ship under very difficult conditions whilst being bombed, and also in entering Dunkirk and when under fire from shore batteries. His devotion to duty under difficult circumstances was remarkable.

Showed exceptional keenness and devotion to duty, and complete disregard to personal danger whilst manning the Lewis gun during the frequent air raids.
In addition, he volunteered to go to Dunkirk in another ship on hearing that, due to damage, the ship would not be able to proceed again to Dunkirk.

Showed exceptional keenness and disregard of all personal danger whilst manning Lewis gun under heavy bombardment from air. In addition to this, Leading
Signalman Atkins volunteered to go to Dunkirk in another ship after the ROSS had been put out of action due to a near miss.

M.S. SALAMANDER. - Lieutenant Commander Lionel James Spencer. Ede.
This ship did 3 trips to the beaches and was continually bombed and machine-gunned. On one occasion, having been ordered by Rear Admiral, Dover, to move westward to Dunkirk at dawn, the ship continued until 0600, and by so doing embarked a further 450 men from Bray. During one attack one rating was slightly wounded. Whilst proceeding to assist the KEITH, the ship was again subjected to a bombing attack and four bombs exploded under water near the ship and lifted the ship bodily. Steam was lost, but was got going again in about a quarter of an hour, when a further air attack took place. The ship proceeded back to port as quickly as possible. Ship was again attacked, but she managed to reach Dover, proceeding on only one boiler.

Lieutenant-Commander Lionel James Spencer Ede, R.N.
This Officer showed great zeal, initiative and seamanship during the operations. The whole time he was endeavouring to avoid air attacks, and, at the same time, pick up troops from the beaches. His initiative in disobeying the order of Rear Admiral, Dover, to proceed from the beach towards Dunkirk at dawn, enabled him to save a further 450 men, including 29 wounded cases.
Having moved westward, an air attack took place upon the SKIPJACK and the KEITH, the SKIPJACK being sunk and the KEITH set on fire. Ship appeared to be in danger of sinking due to a near miss, but after a short time found she was still seaworthy and steam was got on to the main engine.
By his great devotion to duty in face of these air attacks, he was still able to bring his ship safely to port.

Commissioned Engineer Thomas Kirby Reynolds, R.N.
Showed great initiative and skill in getting steam up and the engines restarted after ship had been damaged by near misses, and in addition it was due to him that the morale of the engine room was so good after having had three heavy attacks in four days, apart from this attack, which was almost continuous for three hours.
By his great devotion to duty, it is felt that the ship was got under way so quickly.

This ship was engaged in the operations at Dunkirk

stoker 1st Class Bryan Gaughan, C/KX.79268.
While SALTASH was rescuing survivors from S.S.
BRIGHTON QUEEN, this rating stripped and swan with a line to two men a quarter of a mile away. Finding it a hindrance, he discarded it and eventually rescued these two men. After a short rest, he continued to swim out with lines to men closer to the ship.
By his devotion to duty and great gallantry, he saved many men, although bombing and machine-gunning was going on at close proximity to him.

H.M.S. BIDEFORD - Lieutenant Commander John Hugh Lewes, R.N.
This vessel proceeded to Bray beach on the 29th May, being bombed and machine-gunned on the way across. While off the beach embarking troops in the evening, the third bombing attack took place. The ship was struck on the quarter deck, about 40 feet of stern being completely blown away, No.2 gun put out of action and the 0.5 machin gun platforms wrecked, in addition to much other damage.
In spite of the damage done, of the fact that the ship was grounded aft and of the casualties suffered (3 office and 13 men killed, 1 officer and 18 men wounded), BIDEFOR
continued to embark troops during the night, and when eventually towed off and home, carried 400 troops to
England on the 31st May.

In spite of the severe damage to his ship by bombs and the fact that his ship was aground, he continued to rescue troops from Bray beach, and

Displayed zeal and unswerving devotion to duty throughout the period 29th-31st May, when he was an outstanding example to all. His sick berth attendant seriously wounded, he doalt with some 50
casualties, many horribly mutilated or dangerously wounded, and performed several major operations, having organised his limited resources to their

Acting Cook Albert Victor Hocking, D/MX.58549.
When the ship was bombed everyone aft was killed or badly wounded except these two men. Stoker Petty
Officer Donnelly's duty was "in charge of the after fire and repair party". Hocking formed one of the
First Aid Party. The fire main aft was blown away and fire broke out in the cabin flat immediately

above the after magazine. These two men, working entirely on their own initiative, ran hoses aft from the first connection and succeeded in getting the fire under control and hoses down the after magazine hatch to flood the magazine (the magazine flooding arrangements were destroyed) and partly flooded it before assistance came. Their prompt and efficient action probably saved the ship.

Signalman Charles Raymond Craig, D/JX.141848.
Landed with an officer to organise embarkation on the beach, then joined one of the embarkation posts, took charge of the signalling apparatus and got into communication with several ships. When the station was destroyed by bombing, Craig improvised a signal lamp out of the headlight of a lorry and used this until the battery ran down. He remained ashore all night and was eventually sent back by the embarkation officer. On arrival at Dover he volunteered to go over to Dunkirk pier, where signalmen were required, and spent another night there.

Until sunk by enemy air attack did good work off the beaches. Evacuated over 1,200 troops, including a large number of wounded, and the General Officer Command
1st Corps; also took the Personnel Vessel NORMANIA in tow until she sank, then rescued the crew.

Lieutenant Denis Harold Palmer Gardiner, R.N.
MOSQUITO was subjected to an unusually severe series of air attacks, during which Lieutenant Gardiner handled his ship with coolness and courage. He showed good judgment and seamanship in his work off the beaches, not only in evacuation with his own vessel, but in directing the activities of other power boats in the vicinity.
By remaining off the beaches during his second visit when subjected to a very severe air attack which caused minor damage to the ship, and casualties on board, he succeeded in rescuing a further large number of troops. MOSQUITO was finally attacked by 20
Junkers and was literally enveloped by salvos and bombs for a considerable period, and was frequently hit, the ship commencing to sink. There is no doubt that Lieutenant Gardiner displayed admirable coolness and courage throughout these exacting events, and as
Commanding Officer of his ship gave an excellent lead to his officers and men, who themselves emulated his gallantry. Before finally leaving his ship, Lieutenant
Gardiner carried out all the duties required by the regulations and Service custom. He was finally wounded when on passage in WORCESTER.

During the first trip he undoubtedly saved the lived of many of the wounded soldiers on board by his professional attendance. When MOSQUITO was sinking he remained on board to the last, making certain that there were no living left board and tending and supervising the transport of the wounded. During passage in WORCESTER, when further bombing caused casualties, he was again much in evidence in his professional capacity. His conduct was in the best traditions of the Service, and of his profession.

Lieutenant Cyril Cornelius Bone, R.N.V.R, Senior Officer.
Although the unit of nine yachts only worked off the beaches from 0600/31/5 to dawn 1/6, they performed particularly valuable work off La Panne and Bray at a critical time when La Panne was about to be finally evacuated,
British troops either embarking or withdrawing westward.
The period also happened to be one of intensive air bombardment, interspersed with sporadic heavy artillery fire on the beaches.
Particularly notable was the work of these boats inshore, which included the embarkation of Lord Gort and the G.H.Q. party. 3500 - 4000 troops were lifted,

This Officer displayed remarkable determination, endurance and devotion to duty. Commencing service in
SERIOLA, he skilfully worked open boats through the surf on the beaches during31/5. The next day he was ordered to command a naval steam picket-boat, and by his determination and good judgment succeeded in operating this craft for nearly 24 hours, though its coal capacity only sufficed for
6 hours. Also seized and directed the activities of a number of abandoned boats found drifting off the coast.
Finally returned to Ramsgate and joined another vessel for a further day's service at Dunkirk.
Specially recommended by Senior Officers for great coolness under heavy fire in dangerous conditions.

By his strong sense of duty and cheerful demeanour set an excellent example to those around him.

FLARE-BURNING DRINTERS OF THE DOVER COMMAND.
Captain Eric Wheler Bush, D.S.C., R.N.
These 19 drifters had been employed on 10 days'
continuous service in connection with the Calais operation and on patrol immediately prior to the commencement of
DYNAMO. Throughout DYNAMO, they worked with marked zeal and conspicuous success, rainly at Dunkirk Harbour, and particularly at the post of honour in the inner harbour, where the shelling was most severe. All did well in a varying degree and were responsible for lifting to safety some 10,000 Allied troops.
The following officers and men have been selected for special recognition of their gallant services.

Commander English was severely injured by explosion of depth charges when swimming in the water after his ship was sunk. Picked up by WESTELLA, he used his utmost exertion to save the lives of both crews by getting out boats when WESTELLA was sunk subsequently. Later, after being the for WESTELLA being sunk to prevent her to falling internal into rescued for the second time, by SAON, insisted on the injuries. hands He is now in hospital and his need of the enemy and then collapsed, condition due gives cause for grave anxiety.

8 vessels. The trawlers assisted in berthing and unberthing these ships, embarking the troops as opportunity offered, Lieutenant Bill assisting the
Piermaster on the jetty. During the worst raid at
1800 when all the damage occurred, he personally, by drawing his revolver maintained order among the troops, who were inclined to panic. Under his direction trawlers assisted to clear the harbour of ships to safeguard the vital channel from being blocked. Subsequently, he detailed his vessels to assist those damaged, to rescue survivors and troops from the 6 vessels who were sunk or severely damaged.
Throughout this period of severe trial Lieutenant Bill remained cool and self-possessed and set a magnificent example to those around him. He showed sound judgment in his actions and his orders to his trawlers and was largely responsible for the fact that greater loss was not incurred. A fine display of officer-like qualities and gallantry under fire.

DORIENTA suffered air bombardment and was finally severely damaged by the explosion of a shell from a shore battery. It was boarded by the local Senior
Officer, who considered the ship was completely out of action owing to severe engine room damage. Nevertheless
Skipper Reynolds determined to bring his ship back and finally, navigating without any chart and with engines partially disabled, brought his ship back to port with troops on board.

Commodore Maintenance Taylor was appointed to Sheerness for duty
Division, Admiralty. He built up an organisation from
Tuesday 28th May, and prepared a multitude of small craft for service on the coast, with special items of equipment water. and organised the manning, either from volunteers or demanded from time to time such as rafts, ladders, lifebuoys, by men from the Chatham Depot. This Sheerness organisation acted as a clearing house and despatching point for these vessels, the total number sent out from Sheerness being about
125 by: Sunday, June 2nd. Commodore Taylor then proceeded to Ramsgate to help the Naval Officer in Charge, and to assist in the co-operation of the motor boats etc., with the larger vessels. On the last 2 nights of the evacuation, at my request, he personally organised and conducted the operation of the motor boat flotilla from Ramsgate to evacuate French from the St. Malo beach and from the inner
Harbour Dunkirk, both of which localities were regarded as positions of honour, being at that time under continuous shell fire. These ventures were eminently successful, and a large number of French troops were dealt with by Commodore
Taylor's craft. To these craft fell the honour of being the last units to leave Dunkirk in the early hours of June
4th.

GRIVE left Portsmouth 1530/29th May, arrived Dover
2359/29 and sailed for Dunkirk 1400/30, where for 2½ hours she embarked troops at from the East beach with her own boats, arriving back Dover a.m. 31st with just under 300 troops.
GRIVE left Dover again at 1400/31, entered Dunkirk harbour at 2000/31 and embarked 400 troops during a very severe air raid. GRIVE arrived back at Dover 0100/1, landed her troops and although having only 5 rounds of ammunition left per gun, sailed again at 0300/1.
Reaching Dunkirk 0800/1 GRIVE went alongside the pier and took off a group of troops during heavy bombing. Leaving harbour GRIVE went alongside HAVANT, which had been hit by a bomb, and was on fire, and took off all her troops and wounded, together with IVANHOE's survivors. GRIVE arrived
Dover 1300/1 with 700 on board.
At this stage Captain Lambart put Lieutenant West,
R.N.R. (an officer of over 60) ashore, as he had done magnificent work handling the ship "and had earned a rest".
Captain Lambart himself, who was 67, would not rest; he assembled his crew, informed them he intended to start off again immediately. The crew were equally determined and, having provisioned and ammunitioned, the ship sailed at
1600/1.
When approaching Dunkirk about 2230 GRIVE apparently was mined and was blown to pieces.
