"Anthony and "Vority", /vimy and H.N.Transports-"st.Helier" "Royal Daffodil" and eastward of N.Goodwin L.V., H.ll.Transport"Kyno" in "Kyno", and "St. Julien". (2) 199 182 - Dover B.W. remaining until 1530 when orders were received to proceed Dunkirk. 1544. Anchor aweigh and proceeded Dunkirk (N.about passage) arriving in borth at 1855. During entry and berthing in Port, continual bombing was experienced, and later intermittent bombing and shelling during the stay in harbour. The vessel was shifted under main steam to opposite quay, but finding no casualties to enbark, returned to one borth ahoad of original berth. During these movements four bombs were dropped close ahead of vessel in middle of harbour. Considerable time was lost during these manouvers owing to underwater wrocks in vicinity of berths. Damage to bottom (if any) unknown. The loading of casualties was resumed at 1945,all mombers of crew assisting in the embarkation.. Owing to darkness out of habbour with several obstructions in the channel to 2 setting in, falling tide, and the vessel having to be backed it was decided after consultation with the S.T.O. embarkation at 2145. This was done,and the vessel proceeded cease out of harbour and thence to Dover for orders. June 0210. 1/40. Arrived off Dover- passage uneventful except for and several planes overhead. Ship was completely darkened no navigation lights were used. Orders wore received at Dover to proceed to Newhaven - arriving there 0714. June 2/40. At Newhaven under immodiate orders. Sir, In reply to your request for a narrative of events period May 36th to June 4th, I give the following details:- appertaining to this Vessel's movements covering the May 26th. Noon. Left Newhaven for Dover. 3.40 pm. Off Dover. 6.05 pm. Received orders to anchor in Downs. Remained at anchor in Doms. May 27th. May 98th. 2.50 pm. Received orders to proceed to Dunkirk. 2.55 pm. Left anchorage. 7.40 pm. Entered Dunicivie. 8.5 pm. Made fast alongside Pier. Bombing attacks on Town during night. No damage or casualties. May 29th. 7.45 am. Left Dunkirk for Dover. 149 patients on board. 12.45pm. Off Dover. 12.50pm. Received orders proceed Newhaven. 4.53 pm. Alongside Newhaven and proceeded to land patients. Remained at Newhaven. May 30th. May 31st. 9.3 am. Left Newhaven to Dover. 2.25 p.m. Received instructions to proceed to 1.4 pm. off Dover. Dunkirk, one hour after eSt. Andrew". 8.15 pm. Off Dunkirk Breakwater, signalled 4.42 pm. Hove up and proceeded. from shore to remain outside. 9.45 pm. From this time, Vessel continuously attacked by enemy mine-laying machines, seven attacks being made altogether. One magnetic mine dropped by parachute fell just ahead of Vessel, engines reversed to give wide borth. Twenty minutes later mine blows up, 100 feet no apparent damage. Another mine cleared ahead of ship. Vessel badly shaken but ship's starboard side by only 4 feet. Ship giving headway to clear danger. This did not explode. Other mines opened fire by machine guns, one bullet dropped astern, but well clear. Machines Attempted continuously from 10 pm. to being found ambedded in 40.1 hatch. 0.30 am. to gat contact with shore by Morse, but failed to receive a reply. When off Calais near 'Dyck' Light Ship position both ships heavily shelled by shore batteries Maid of Orleans' in vicinity also shelled. All three ships return to Dover by unauthorised route to avoid severe damage. -5-40. Left Downs 1112 following 'St Helier| St Julien' and 'St Andrew' not having & chart for specified route. Bombs and aerial torpedoes fell near ship when passing Middelkerke Bank buoy. Ordered out of Harbour and vicinity on account of severe bombing by relays. Impossible to remain in the vicinity. All three ships returned to Downs. --5-40. Received orders to proceed to Dunkirk escorted by destroyer, 1St Andrew' following astern. When north of lieuport buoy and destroyer had moved on ahead, ship was heavily bombed, machine gunned and shelled by shore batteries, bombs pitching close alongside ship causing damage which has been submitted under separate cover ( 1st June 1. Proceeded to Denkirk. Impossible to enter harbour or remain in vioinity owing to continuous heavy bombing. Returned to Downs. -5-40. 0545 Naval party boarded with orders to proceed to Dunkirk. "St. Seiriol" Your letter of the 5th instant, addressed to the Master of "St. Seirioi" has been forwarded to this Office, and we have to inform you that Captain Dobb is away from homeand under Medical Treatment. Ne attached a report signed by the Waster dated 8th June, and addressed to this Company with the intention of it being forwarded to the competent authority. We have also received a report from the 2nd Officer and we enclose extract of same. We also attach an extract from the report which was forwarded to the Director of Sea Transport on the 7th June and signed by the Chairman of this Company. We are expecting & report from the Chief Officer - J. McNamee and Purser D.D. MeMahon, which will be forwarded on to you within the next two or three days. The Master of the vessel left the Ship by order of the Medical Officeron Thursday 30th May. Any further information which you may require we shall be pleased to furnish. Dear Sirs, "St.Seiriol" On Tuesday the 21st day at 7.30 pm. while entering Calais my vessel was attacked by Three Enemy Bonbers but they failed to make a hit. while alongside more attacks were made but we managed to get away at 8.30 pm, and proceeded to Dover and then to the Downs to Anchor. On Monday the 27th May at 1.30 pm. we proceeded to Dunkirk in company with the "Channel Queen" arriving Dunkirk about 8.0 pm. alongside the Mole, but were ordered to go to the Beaches to pick up Troops, using our Lifeboats. While the $ lifeboats were away 1 was asked if 1 could go back to the red Mole by a Destroyer as there were a very large number of troops there. It was now about 10.0 pm. and dark and heavy bombing and gunfire all around. 1 got alongside the Mole in a very short time and in embarked 600 soldiers and left the Mole at about midnight. I went back to look for my lifeboats but as they were being used to convoy troops from the Beach to other craft 1 proceeded to Dover via the Calais route as ordered by a Destroyer. During the passage 1 was again attacked by Aircraft but got away without being hit. On arrival at at Dover I was ordered to Folkestone to disembark. ds, The M.V. "Channel Queen" was bombed and sunk. On Wednesday 29th May we left Dover at 12.30 pm for Dunkirk to embark troops. Arrived off Dunkirk in heavy de Mole, when the Mole was bombed, also the "Fenella" which bombing and shore gunfire and proceeded to go alongside the was alongside and the "Crested Eagle". 1 could not make a landing. The bombing was still going on but we were lucky, so we dropped Anchor and the Captain ordered 10 boats to be Lowered and manned and to go ashore and get as many 128 troops as we could. SERIOL". to In response to your request for & report on the above named at Officer, I can do no better than relate as accurately as possible hrte shil to the whole story concerning the relief of the "St. Seriol's Crew. NJ Early on Thursday, May, 30th., I was informed by the P.S.T.O., Dover, that the Crew of the "St. Seriol" has complained they were no longer fit to continue their duties and, if it was considered 03 el To necessary they were to be relieved as soon as possible. to I immediately went on board to investigate the complaint and it was only as & result of my inquiries, that I became fully aware of the prevailing conditions and the arduous tasks the men concerned with the evacuation were performing. The "St. Seriol", & small, unarmed, coasting passenger vessel, had already made several trips to Dunkirk in circumstances, which as you know, would be most trying to Crews of warships. I found most of the Crew in a very fatigued and nervous state, even though many of them were quite young and of good physique. After interviewing several of the men I consulted the ship's Adjutant and Army Doctor to ascertain their views. They were younger men but they had not the dightest hesitation in saying that alightly doubtful about the necessity of relieving some of the which rendered him incapable of standing for any length of suffering from a form of nervous paralysis from the waist downwards, time.
