H.M.S. HARVESTER - Lieutenant Commander Mark Thornton, R.N.
After only 21/2 days of "working-up" after commissioning,
HARVESTER was sent to Dover and completed 3 round trips to the coast. On the last of these she experienced the full weight of the intensive air attack early on the
1st June. Her A.A. gunnery was most effective, and she shared in the destruction of at least 3 enemy aircraft.
The ship was well handled throughout. Her inshore boat work was excellent.

D.S.C., R.N.
HAVANT made 3 trips including 2 to the beaches. On the first 2 trips she brought home 1,500 troops in all. On the
3rd trip, while alongside Dunkirk pier waiting for troops to embark during an intense aerial bombardment, she saw
IVANHOE struck amidships and on fire so steamed out to her assistance. Having taken off all the troops (about 500
including many wounded) HAVANT proceeded for Dover, but was soon subjected to intense dive bombing, high and low level bombing and bombardment from shore batteries. She was hit by 2 bombs in the engineroom, and then a large delay action bomb, which fell about 50 yards ahead of ship, exploded right underneath her,
Further bombing caused more underwater damage and
HAVANT finally rolled over and sank after the troops and crew had transferred to AEGIR.

The Engineer Officer and 2 E.R.A.s having been killci and all the other E.R.A.s having been wounded, this rating became in charge of the engineroom department.
He showed great initiative and resource by letting the steam out of the boilers at a critical time, thereby saving the ship from running on to a sandbank opposite
Dunkirk. He subsequently showed great calmness and presence of mind in doing all he could to save the ship and to keep the Captain informed of the state of affairs below. He was the last rating to leave the ship.

H.M.S. ICARUS. - Lieutenant-Commander Colin Douglas Maud, R.N.
ICARUS made 6 trips during the period 29th May - 2nd
June, bringing home about 5,000 troops. 2 trips were to the beaches, during the first of which there were frequent air attacks on ship and beaches. While in Dunkirk on two separate trips the harbour was subjected to heavy air attacks.
Whilst returning to Dover on the 29th and in a crowded channel which prevented zig-zagging, ICARUS was attacked by at least 10 aircraft and later by one persistent low level bomber. All attacks failed due to the use of smoke and violent and well-judged alterations of speed. Similar avoiding action on the 31st May foiled another bomb attack.

H.M.S. IMPULSIVE - Lieutenant Commander William Scott Thomas, R.N.
IMPULSIVE made 4 trips during the period 27th - 31st May, two to the beaches, and two to Dunkirk pier, bringing home a total of about 3,500 troops.
On 28th May, whilst on passage to Dunkirk, ship was heavily attacked by six Heinkel bombers. Full speed and frequent alteration of course prevented any hits being scored, but further attack by 3 aircraft using machine guns produced casualties and put "B" gun out of action.
On 31st May, whilst lying off Dunkirk beach, IMPULSIVE
grounded aft on an uncharted wreck, damaging both propellers and shafts, necessitating passage to Sheerness 1st June for repairs, in consequence of which she was unable to take further part in the evacuation.

M.S. IVANHOE. - Commander Philip Henry Hadow, R.N.
Made 1 trip to Dunkirk beach and 2 to Dunkirk pier, bringing home a total of about 2,900 troops. On 1st June when returning to Dover with 1,000 troops on board she was subjected to heavy level bombing attacks by a large number of aircraft, but all these attacks were avoided.
Off Dunkirk dive bombing attacks developed and
IVANHOE received considerable amage from 2 near misses and one bomb exploded near the base of the foremost funnel:
casualties 26 killed and 30 wounded.
Amongst other damage, Nos. 1 and 2 Boiler Rooms became flooded. The ship eventually reached Sheerness in spite of further attacks by a large number of level bombers on two occasions, though her speed was only 7 knots. The use of smoke floats to simulate hits appears to have misled the enemy.

Handled his ship with skill during evacuation from Dunkirk and the beaches, and skilfully brought her home when severely damaged by bombing in spite of subsequent heavy bombing attacks by large numbers of aircraft.

By his coolness and energy set a fine example to his department when dealing with the damage below after the ship had been bombed. He rapidly assessed the damage, and by his efforts succeeded in getting way on the ship in the shortest possible time.

Displayed outstanding zeal and energy throughout.
Without the assistance of any Medical Officer he dealt most efficiently and untiringly with the wounded, many of whom were badly maimed and some of whom he extricated unaided from a pile of corpses and debris.

.M.S. JAGUAR - Lieutenant Commander John Franklin William Hine R.N.
JAGUAR made one trip to Dunkirk beach on the 28th May, and 700 troops were brought home. On the 29th May, JAGUAR
was attacked by dive bombers while on passage to Dunkirk, but the attackers were driven off by A/A fire. Having embarkel
800 troops, JAGUAR left Dunkirk by order of the Senior
Naval Officer, to provide cover for transport LOCH GARRY.
Whilst taking station ahead of this 12 knot transport, and in waters allowing little freedom of manoeuvre, 14 dive bombing attacks developed. A near miss caused considerable damage to ship and personnel, the engines and steering gear were put out of action and Nos.1 and 2 boiler rooms and low-power rooms were flooding. Troops were transferred to
EXPRESS and RIKA, but eventually steam was raised and
JAGUAR was able to reach Dover.

Lieutenant Francis Bruen, R.N.
Gunnery Control Officer in the director where he was wounded in the hand dnring the bombing attack.
Assisted the First Lieutenant on the forecastle when being taken in tow, returning to the director when guns were again in action.
On return to Dover, a Sub. Lieutenant or other officer was required by Vice Admiral, Dover, for service in a
Dutch skoot. Lieutenant Bruen insisted on volunteering, despite his wound, and while in the skoot evacuated troops from a beach under fire, afterwards being discharged to hospital owing to his wound.

Lieutenant (E) Cyril Rothwell. R.N.
Was continuously employed for 334 hours locating and correcting damage to hull and steam and fuel pipes until he finally succeeded in raising steam. He continued to supervise temporary repairs until return to harbour.
His efficiency in achieving this feat reflects great credit on himself and his department.
Recommended for promotion, or advancement in seniority.

Though only 18 years of age, showed great initiative and leadership in taking charge of soldiers on after lower mess deck, instructing them to place hammocks against the ship's side and afterwards extinguishing a fire.

Though wounded in the jaw, continued to fight the port 0.5 machine gun in spite of a continuous hail of bomb splinters.

In charge of No.2 Boiler Room when bomb damage caused the boiler room to rapidly fill with steam and put out all lights. Carr, although wounded, remained at his post until he had shut off all valves necessary to isolate the boiler, afterwards making attempts in protective clothing and wet towels, to enter the boiler room and locate damage.

crews engaged in ferrying troops from Bray beach to various ships, and were so employed continuously for from 14 to 16 hours without food, wet through and subjected to frequent bombing attacks. Commanding

boats was exemplary and reflects credit on all concerned.'

H.M.S. KEITH. - Captain Edward Lyon Berthon, D.S.C., R.N.
KEITH operated off the coast in two prolonged periods between 1730/30/5 and 0900/1/6, when she finally sank as a result of damage sustained during repeated bomb attacks.
She acted as flagship of the Rear-Admiral, Dover, in charge of all sea forces on the coast.

MALCOLM. - Captain Thomas Edgar Halsey, R.N. (Decorated for this operation London Gazette 7th June, 1940)
MALCOLM made 8 trips during the period 28th May - 4th
June, one being to the beaches, the remainder to Dunkirk pier, and brought home a total of about 6,400 troops.
MALCOLM was considerably shaken by near misses of bombs and to have kept going to and from Dunkirk daily, except for one night and a day when ordered by Vice Admiral Dover to take a much needed rest, reflects the greatest credit on all officers and men.

Lieutenant Jan Nagle Douglas Cox, R.N. (1st Lieutenant).
Displayed great efficiency in organising the ship for the embarkation and stowage of troops. Although he had so recently joined the ship he obtained the confidence and co-operation of the ship's company.
Boarded S.S. CLAN MACALISTER and displayed gallantry in extinguishing the fire on board which, at the time, it seemed must explode her ammunition storage.
He also rallied CLAN MACALISTER's crew.

Showed great ability in navigating between Dunkirk and Dover; on two occasions took the ship alongside at Dunkirk when Captain (D) mistrusted his own judgment and eyesight in the dark owing to fatigue,

Appeared oblivious of any personal danger and positively seemed to enjoy estimating where bombs would hit, wholeheartedly watching them fall.

Admirable organisation and control of signal department. Rendered great assistance to his
Commanding Officer, conducting himself with great coolness on the bridge when under fire.

Ran his department with great ability in conditions of great difficulty and some peril. The ship had been much shaken by previous bombing as well as that at Dunkirk, causing leaky steam joints, failure of evaporating plant, etc. so that the average and temperature of the Engine Room was between 140
manoeuvring, though this temperature enormously
150°. In spite of this, no mistakes were made when increased the fatigue of the Engine Room personnel. of

Operation "DYNAMO" - Recommendations of Personnel.
M.S. SABRE - Commander Brian Dean, R.N. (decorated D.S.O. for this operation London Gazette 7th June, 1940).
During the period 27th May - 4th June, this old
Destroyer made 10 trips to the beaches, the record number of trips for any class of vessel taking part in the operation, and brought back a total of 5,000 troops.
On emerging from Dunkirk harbour, 29th May, SABRE
found some men struggling in the water. Having no boats -
they had left with the First Lieutenant working with other vessels off the beach - the ship was manoeuvred alongside each man in turn. Throughout that operation she was repeatedly attacked by dive bombers, but sustained no damage.
Later in the day she was severely shaken by near misses.
30th May, she came under fire from shore batteries, receiving several hits on the bridge and superstructure.
Her Gyro compass was put out of action, and Owing to the
D/G cable being damaged, her magnetic compass was rendered practically useless. Although the D/G cable was repaired, her compass was unreliable the rest of the operation.
By P.M. 30th, all hands were utterly exhausted, but a night's rest and a day in harbour, while repairs were effected, "gave them a new lease of life."
The Commanding Officer, in his narrative, points out that SABRE'S engines are 22 years old, and were submerged and full of salt water for 48 hours after a collision in
October 1939. To avoid bombs and shell fire, it was necessary to make most exacting demands on the engines.
In every case the response was immediate, all that could be desired, and far greater than could reasonably be expected.

Thoroughly reliable in all emergencies. Also did well in charge of boats, embarking the maximum number of troops in the minimum time. Was always one of the first to sight aircraft and was quick to get the guns on to them, and so to keep the aircraft at a respectful distance.

H.M.S. SALADIN. - Lieutenant-Commander Lawrence J. Dover, R.N.
This ship proceeded to La Panne beach on 29th May, but when off Dunkirk was attacked by aircraft and as a result of damage received she returned to Dover, and was unable to take a further part in the evacuation.
Recommendations.

Lieutenant John Henry Edwards, R.N. (Retired).
During one attack by aircraft a fire was reported aft and Lieutenant Edwards was sent to deal with it. He found the ready use cordite in the after gun position burning and with the aid of two able seamen threw the burning charges overboard, as also the charges in another box which was burning.

SCIMITAR made 4 trips to the beaches and 1 to Dunkirk
Pier during the period 28th May and 1st June, rescuing a total of 2,200 troops. On her 6th trip (to Dunkirk) she was recalled but rescued 500 troops from S.S. PRAGUE.
The Commanding Officer stresses the skill and determination of the boats parties in trying conditions and under shell fire and aircraft attacks.

SHIKARI made 7 trips to Dunkirk and the beaches between 29th May and 3rd June, evacuating a total of
3,589 troops.
The first 3 days troops were embarked from La Panne and Bray beaches, which were generally under shell fire and frequently bombed; the remainder of the time troops were taken from Dunkirk.
Ship was frequently fired on by shore batteries, but avoided being hit by the use of smoke screens and zigzagging at high speed.

VANQUISHER had been at sea from 22nd to 26th May patrolling off S.W. Ireland, and arrived at Dover early 28th
May - although Officers and men were therefore tired on that date, 7 trips were made to Dunkirk between the 28th May and 4th June, about 4,000 troops being brought home.
Having made one trip on 28th and two on 29th, her
Commanding Officer found his sight and judgment to be so seriously impaired by lack of rest that he did not consider himself fit to retain command and he therefore arranged for temporary reliefs for himself and his Gunner. During the operation a total of 4 officers and 9 ratings had to be landed to obtain rest.

VENOMOUS made 5 trips to Dunkirk and the beaches and brought home about 4,900 troops. Off Bray beach on the
31st May she was subjected to repeated high level bombing attacks and again the same day, when lying off Dunkirk waiting to enter. She was also attacked by an aircraft with machine gun fire during the night of 2nd/3rd, but the enemy was driven off by barrage fire.
Captain D.16 in his minute to VENOMOUS report states:
"This is the third occasion recently on which VENOMOUS has done well in action. I consider great credit is due to her."

Lieutenant Commander Michael Wentworth Ewart-Wentworth
R.N. (Ret) From 29th May.
VIMY made one trip to Dunkirk escorting 4 transports, on 27th May, followed by 5 trips between 28th and 31st May in which a total of 2,976 troops were brought home.
On the 27th May, at 2355, her Captain (Lieutenant
Commander R. G. K. Knowling, R.N.) left the bridge and was not seen again. Lieutenant Northey took command and carried on to Dunkirk at 26 knots after a thorough search of the ship had been made.
On passage back to Dover p.m. 28th with 613 troops on board, VIMY was attacked by several bombers but avoiding action prevented any hits being obtained by the aircraft.
Lieutenant Commander Ewart-Wentworth, R.N. assumed command of VIMY 29th May, On the 30th May, VIMY was under gunfire from shore batteries bombarding Dunkirk harbour, but was not hit.
1st June, VIMY collided with AMULREE and had to return to Dover and took no further part in the operation.

Was in temporary command of H.M.S. VIMY on the 27th and 28th May, when he went twice to Dunkirk and brought back 1,204 troops. Handled his ship with skill, both at Dunkirk, and during repeated bombing attacks while on passage home on the 28th, thereby avoiding damage to his ship. As First Lieutenant, during the remainder of the operation, showed consistent devotion to duty.

Bray for 24 hours on the 30th and 31st May and bringing hone a total of 2381 troops. On the night of 2nd/3rd June she crews. escorted the blockships to Dunkirk and brought back their
On the 27th May she was heavily attacked whilst on passage by 25 aircraft, at least 100 bombs being dropped.
She avoided all these and brought down 2 bombers, a 3rd being damaged but not seen to crash.
P.M. 29th Lieutenant Commander Parish was sent on sick leave due to overstrain and was relieved by Commander
Dechaineux, R.A.N.
At 1800/30 a battery East of Bray, which had carried out desultory and inaccurate fire on the anchorage all the afternoon, commenced a controlled and accurate fire on
VIVACIOUS who was hit on the forecastle (3 killed and 12
wounded) and had many holes on the water line from shrapne.., and Commander Dechaineux ordered a retirement of ship to the westward out of range.

Conspicuous throughout this operation for his skill and coolness. After work in H.M.S. WORCESTER

H.M.S. MOSQUITO, performing 2 amputations under very difficult conditions. Later the same day he did good work amongst the wounded on board H.M.S. WORCESTER.

This ship did two trips, and on one the ship was put on to the beach, thus facilitating the embarkation of troops. On these two trips, the ship brought back over
1,000 troops. The ship was continually being bombed, and on one occasion a shell burst inside the ship killing five soldiers and wounding seven.

harbour, embarking and bringing back a large number of troops. Whilst working off the beaches boats were sent ashore. On one occasion two of the whalers embarking were riddled with bullets. Ship was shelled from shore batteries and subjected to many attacks from the air.

This ship completed 7 trips to Dunkirk and the beaches between the 27th May and the 3rd June. During the time she was off the beaches she used her own boats for evacuating troops. The boats, whilst embarking the troops, were continually under fire, and the ship herself was bombed and machine gunned several times. Two enemy aircraft were shot down and altogether over 3,500 troops were brought back to England.
