This Officer, who took command on the 31st May, owing to his Captain having had an accident, showed great initiative and zeal in making arrangements for troops to be embarked from the beach, Showed great seamanship in the handling of his ship under very difficult conditions whilst being bombed, and also in entering Dunkirk and when under fire from shore batteries. His devotion to duty under difficult circumstances was remarkable.

Showed exceptional keenness and disregard of all personal danger whilst manning Lewis gun under heavy bombardment from air. In addition to this, Leading

This ship did 3 trips to the beaches and having continually been bombed ordered and machine-gunned. On one was

Lieutenant-Commander Lionel James Spencer Ede, R.N.
This Officer showed great zeal, initiative and seamanship during the operations. The whole time he was endeavouring to avoid air attacks, and, at the same time, pick up troops from the beaches. His initiative in disobeying the order of Rear Admiral, Dover, to proceed from the beach towards Dunkirk at dawn, enabled him to save a further 450 men, including 29 wounded cases.
Having moved westward, an air attack took place upon the SKIPJACK and the KEITH, the SKIPJACK being sunk and the KEITH set on fire. Ship appeared to be in danger of sinking due to a near miss, but after a short time found she was still seaworthy and steam was got on to the main engine.
By his great devotion to duty in face of these air attacks, he was still able to bring his ship safely to port.

Commissioned Engineer Thomas Kirby Reynolds, R.N.
Showed great initiative and skill in getting steam up and the engines restarted after ship had been damaged by near misses, and in addition it was due to him that the morale of the engine room was so good after having had three heavy attacks in four days, apart from this attack, which was almost continuous for three hours.
By his great devotion to duty, it is felt that the ship was got under way so quickly.

While SALTASH was rescuing survivors from S.S.
BRIGHTON QUEEN, this rating stripped and swan with a line to two men a quarter of a mile away. Finding it a hindrance, he discarded it and eventually rescued these two men. After a short rest, he continued to swim out with lines to men closer to the ship.
By his devotion to duty and great gallantry, he saved many men, although bombing and machine-gunning was going on at close proximity to him.

This Officer was continually in charge of the boat work on the beaches being frequently under machine gun and shell fire and bombing attacks. Due to his coolness and courage in encouraging and organising the troops, and to his seamanship, many troops were brought off.

Displayed zeal and unswerving devotion to duty throughout the period 29th-31st May, when he was an outstanding example to all. His sick berth attendant seriously wounded, he dealt with some 50
casualties, many horribly mutilated or dangerously wounded, and performed several major operations, having organised his limited resources to their utmost. Throughout the period tended his patients continuously and at all times displayed great ability, patience and understanding. No effort was too much for him - no call was left unanswered.
He was completely selfless and upheld the traditions of the Royal Navy and of his profession in a most worthy manner.

When the ship was bombed everyone aft was killed or badly wounded except these two men. Stoker Petty
Officer Donnelly's duty was "in charge of the after fire and repair party". Hocking formed one of the
First Aid Party. The fire main aft was blown away and fire broke out in the cabin flat immediately above the after magazine. These two men, working entirely on their own initiative, ran hoses aft from the first connection and succeeded in getting the fire under control and hoses down the after magazine hatch to flood the magazine (the magazine flooding arrangements were destroyed) and partly flooded it before assistance came. Their prompt and efficient action probably saved the ship.

Signalman Charles Raymond Craig, D/JX.141848.
Landed with an officer to organise embarkation on the beach, then joined one of the embarkation posts, took charge of the signalling apparatus and got into communication with several ships. When the station was destroyed by bombing, Craig improvised a signal lamp out of the headlight of a lorry and used this until the battery ran down. He remained ashore all night and was eventually sent back by the embarkation officer. On arrival at Dover he volunteered to go over to Dunkirk pier, where signalmen were required, and spent another night there.

These ratings are selected from the motor boats and whalers, and the crews on two occasions were employed for some 4 hours on end ferrying off troops from Malo beach under surf conditions, transporting some 280 Allied troops under bombardment from the air and sporadic artillery fire.
Stoker Beer was also a Lewis gunner of the ship and damaged one enemy aircraft. These ratings displayed the greatest keenness, cheerfulness and devotion to duty.
Recommend Stoker Beer to be decorated, and the remainder mentioned.

MOSQUITO was subjected to an unusually severe series of air attacks, during which Lieutenant Gardiner handled his ship with coolness and courage. He showed good judgment and seamanship in his work off the beaches, not only in evacuation with his own vessel, but in directing the activities of other power boats in the vicinity.
By remaining off the beaches during his second visit when subjected to a very severe air attack which caused minor damage to the ship, and casualties on board, he succeeded in rescuing a further large number of troops. MOSQUITO was finally attacked by 20
Junkers and was literally enveloped by salvos and bombs for a considerable period, and was frequently hit, the ship commencing to sink. There is no doubt that Lieutenant Gardiner displayed admirable coolness and courage throughout these exacting events, and as
Commanding Officer of his ship gave an excellent lead to his officers and men, who themselves emulated his gallantry. Before finally leaving his ship, Lieutenant
Gardiner carried out all the duties required by the regulations and Service custom. He was finally wounded when on passage in WORCESTER.

Was mortally wounded. This officer throughout operations displayed the greatest qualities and gallantry.

Prob. Sub. Lieutenant Eric Sidney Flint, R.N.R.
Displayed conspicuous gallantry although wounded in the back, leg and arm. Took charge of abandon ship and was largely responsible for a number of survivors saved. This Officer is a Reserve Officer of the very best type and displayed initiative, resource and devotion to duty while in MOSQUITO.

Trainer of the M.Pom pom, of which 3 barrels were put out of action, together with casualties to the whole of the crew except himself, by a bomb bursting close to the ship. Although shockingly wounded in four places, kept the remaining barrel firing until it ran out of ammunition, coolly waiting to fire until an aircraft flew up to the elevation on which the gun was laid. Noone realised that Thirwall was wounded until he was examined in the Drifter which rescued him. A remarkable display of bravery and devotion to duty, which deserves recognition of the highest order.

Able Seaman Cecil Arthur Leonard Hirschfield, C/J.100099.
Trainer of the forward M.5; displayed great devotion to duty, and kept notably keen look-out, being the first to sight ships and buoys at night, and nearly all attacking aircraft. His speed in getting his gun into action could not have been bettered, and he displayed marked leadership over his crew. His gun was put out of action by the bombs, and Hirschfield proceeded, on his own initiative, to the after M.5, where all the crew were wounded but the guns still serviceable. He immediately brought the gun into action by himself, firing single-handed until the attacks were broken off. It is almost certain that he scored hits on two of the aircraft. He then assisted Telegraphist and Commanding Officer with the disposal of the C.B's. He definitely held back from abandoning ship until he himself was satisfied that nothing more could be done on board.

Was in charge of the Boiler Room when the ship was hit. Displayed great coolness and courage. On the order "Abandon ship' he stayed behind shutting off steam and drawing fires, which he did successfully on his own initiative, His conduct was in accordance with the high traditions of the Engine Room Branch.

Chief Petty Officer George Arthur Sawyer, C/J.46680.
Was Captain of the MPom pom and had worked his crew up to a high standard of efficiency. During the 3/2/20 hours before the ship was sunk, this weapon fired 1600 rounds without any hitch of any sort. He was very seriously wounded.

6 hours. Also seized and directed the activities of a number of abandoned boats found drifting off the coast.
Finally returned to Ramsgate and joined another vessel for a further day's service at Dunkirk.

DYNAMO. Throughout DYNAMO, they worked with marked zeal where the shelling was most severe. All did well in a particularly at the post of honour in the inner harbour, and conspicuous success, rainly at Dunkirk Harbour, and varying degree and were responsible for lifting to safety some 10,000 Allied troops.

Commander Reginald Wastell English, R.N.
Commander English was severely injured by explosion of depth charges when swimming in the water after his ship was sunk. Picked up by WESTELLA, he used his utmost exertion to save the lives of both crews by getting out boats when WESTELLA was sunk subsequently. Later, after being rescued for the second time, by SAON, insisted on the need for WESTELLA being sunk to prevent her falling into the hands of the enemy and then collapsed, due to internal injuries. He is now in hospital and his condition gives cause for grave anxiety.

Trawler organisation. Sent in charge of 6 trawlers to
Senior Executive Officer of the Dover Minesweeping
Dunkirk 29th May to 30th May. Arriving Dunkirk 1330, they were subjected to continuous air attack between
1530 and 2000 during the most severe air attack of the whole operation which caused heavy losses. At the time, at Dunkirk East Pier were berthed no less than
8 vessels. The trawlers assisted in berthing and unberthing these ships, embarking the troops as opportunity offered, Lieutenant Bill assisting the
Piermaster on the jetty. During the worst raid at
1800 when all the damage occurred, he personally, by drawing his revolver maintained order among the troops, who were inclined to panic. Under his direction trawlers assisted to clear the harbour of ships to safeguard the vital channel from being blocked. Subsequently, he detailed his vessels to assist those damaged, to rescue survivors and troops from the 6 vessels who were sunk or severely damaged.
Throughout this period of severe trial Lieutenant Bill remained cool and self-possessed and set a magnificent example to those around him. He showed sound judgment in his actions and his orders to his trawlers and was largely responsible for the fact that greater loss was not incurred. A. fine display of officer-like qualities and gallantry under fire.

DORIENTA suffered air bombardment and was finally severely damaged by the explosion of a shell from a shore battery. It was boarded by the local Senior
Officer, who considered the ship was completely out of action owing to severe engine room damage. Nevertheless
Skipper Reynolds determined to bring his ship back and finally, navigating without any chart and with engines partially disabled, brought his ship back to port with troops on board.

Commodore Taylor was appointed to Sheerness for duty

Harbour Dunkirk, both of which localities were regarded as positions of honour, being at that time under continuous shell fire. These ventures were eminently successful, and a large number of French troops were dealt with by Commodore

This ship completed one trip, bringing back
1,100 batteries troops, and whilst on her way back was fired over at by shore for 20 minutes and hit three times. In gunned, but no damage resulted. The damage from shell addition, at the same time the ship was bombed and machine fire was made good and the ship again sailed for Dunkirk.
On the way over dive bombing attacks took place, bombs exploded under water and the ship was shaken badly. A
2nd attack outside the harbour put the steering gear out of action and smashed all instruments and woodwork. Ship manoeuvred into the harbour. Another attack took place and again there were near misses. Ship was holed under water forward and aft but pumps appeared to keep water down. As ship would most probably be attacked at dawn it was felt that it would be better to clear the harbour and so avoid blocking the channel. When clear of the harbour, however, ship took a serious lift and water entered the stokeholds. In the end the ship foundered clear of the channel.

Sailed from Sheerness on Friday, 31st May, in convoy for Dunkirk. En route rescued survivors of a French destroyer, then prodeeded to the beaches.
There he was swamped by French soldiers swarming over his boat, which drifted ashore. Later the boat refloated and he took one V.C.O. and 8 British soldiers; he had no crew except one Stoker, who had great difficulty with the engine. Off Dunkirk, on the way home, the engine broke down, so he broke up the yacht's wood fittings and made the 8 soldiers paddle the boat. Later, the engine restarted after on 18 hour voyage. Next day, without orders, he sailed with a crew of one other Able Seaman, but was turned back as his craft was too slow to take part in the night evacuation ordered for that evening.

His boat acted as flagship of Commodore Stephenson in control of embarkation, who, together with other senior officers, comments most favourably on this officer's conduct. Under almost continuous air bombardment and artillery fire in capsized and swamped boats he was inderatigable in his efforts.
Directly responsible for the successful embarkation of hundreds of troops. Set an excellent example of devotion to duty and gallant conduct, and performed a remarkable feat of endurance.

This boat was used off the beaches at Dunkirk during severe bombing from the air. Direct hits were registered on several vessels. Boat proceeded to pick up survivors during the bombing attacks, and, having filled up, proceeded towards Ramsgate. On her way across she was fired at by 3 trawlers at 1,100 yards range, one of whom then tried to ram her. All the crew and survivors jumped overboard except two R.N.V.R. officers and Able Seaman
Strand. The R.N.V.R. officers were wounded and Strand took charge of the boat, narrowly preventing the boat being rammed. The boat was eventually towed to Ramsgate.

Everyone remained calm and gave the utmost assistance to the troops. The E.R.M. staff had to effect repairs under fire. All did well.

In command of Flotilla of 6. Proceeded boats from Southend found to Dunkirk without charts on 31/5. direct offshore unsuitable for beach work, largely Cockle to harbour and on the outside of the harbour breakwaters obstructions, worked Flotilla inside Dunkirk owing from 2130/31 to 0300/1. Flotilla handled about 900
troops, finally returning to Ramsgate fully laden.
Cockle boats being no longer serviceable, commandeered tug and boat taking them to Dunkirk harbour. There employed as interpreter controlling French troops on being one of only two survivors. By a remarkable feat shore. Was sunk in R.A.F. motor boat by air attack, of endurance was swimming for four hours finally climbing unaided into deserted boat. Rescued by French fishing vessel. A gallant young officer who displayed courage, initiative and determination of high order. This officer was especially noted for good work by many semior officers encountered in the operation.

Signed on T.124 agreement and took over motorboat LITTLE ANN to the beaches at Dunkirk. There he was dive-bombed and machine-gunned, and the boat sank.
Notwithstanding this he carried on working at the beaches for four days. DYNAMO being over, he then volunteered for Captain Selby's operation, and after that for CYCLE, when he was severely wounded.
